Although the Senators have lost most of their best scorers, the one thing that they do have is young speed. This is exactly the reason that they were able to stay in the game against Boston on Saturday night. Although they lost that one by a score of 3-2, it was still an entertaining game to watch. Brady Tkachuk, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anthony Duclair will skate as the team’s top line while Bobby Ryan holds down the fort on the second line with Colin White and Zack Smith. Tkachuk is probably the best bet here as he leads the team with nine points over the last 11 games. This gives him 16 goals and 20 assists on the season. Granted, that is not a lot but the extra ice time seems to have certainly affected his production now that the top scorers have been gone for a week or two. Defenseman Thomas Chabot was off and running to having a spectacular season but getting injured and coming back to less talent on the team has taken its toll. Four of his 48 points have come over the last three weeks which means that he had 44 points in 50 games going into the team’s last 11 games. That is a pretty significant drop.
The Philadelphia faithful are still holding out a bit of hope that the Flyers can indeed make the play-offs this season. The window is closing rapidly however as Philadelphia is seven points and three teams away from the eighth and final play-odd spot in the Eastern Conference. If the Flyers are going to win this evening they will have to do it without Jakub Voracek as he has been suspended two games for the hit on Johnny Boychuk the other night. Look for the top line of Claude Giroux, to shift down and play with Sean Couturier and Oskar Lindblom while Ryan Hartman gets a bump here and will skate with Nolan Patrick and James van Riemsdyk. Couturier leads the team with 28 goals while Giroux’s 53 assists and 73 points lead the team in those scoring categories. It may not matter who skates with whom as the Senators have given up 29 goals over the past seven games. Defenseman Travis Sanheim is starting to come into his own as he has grabbed nine of his 31 points over the last three weeks.
