When To Use Individual Player Volatility Rather Than Positional Volatility

The positional CV’s we’ve been applying were calculated from the average of a bunch of players at each position, so obviously there are differences in volatility between players who play the same position. The reason I recommend using positional CV as a backbone to modify projections is because it captures each position’s inherent volatility differences over a large sample.

However, there can be a place for individual CV. You’ll need it when making a decision between two players of the same value who play the same position. Also, you may need to use individual CV’s for certain players who have proven to be outliers at their position because they excel in certain statistical categories, which I’ll explain in greater detail below.
