When picking pitchers, I always start with the core stats — every single day.
There are four core stats I look at when narrowing down my pitcher selections. Three of these are the stats that have the greatest year-to-year correlation (and are therefore likeliest to play out even in the relatively small sample size of a single game).
The fourth stat is the most predictive.
