Putting it All Together

Divorcing a pitcher from his name is one of the greatest obstacles to overcome in order to succeed in MLB DFS. You can read this entire course, and you can still fail to properly pick pitchers simply by making that one mistake.

The numbers tell you one thing.

Preconceived notions about who is a good and bad pitcher — about who is a safe and risky pitcher — tell you something else.

Even preconceived notions about who is a “high-strikeout pitcher” can often tell you something different than what the numbers themselves say.

Once you start building your own pitcher master Sheet — in a document on your computer, as I do, or in a spreadsheet thingy — you will be surprised by some of the numbers you find for certain pitchers. There are plenty of high-priced, “elite” pitchers whose strikeout rates are far lower than you would ever have guessed, and yet people pay far too much to roster these pitchers every single time they step on the mound.
