Umpires

There’s yet another aspect regarding pitcher selection that you’ll still want to address – the home plate umpire. This lesson is all about paying attention to the men in blue behind the plate. While we’ve seen MLB do it’s best to standardize the way games are called as much as possible in recent years, MLB umpires are still very much human and vulnerable to certain tendencies. Some umpires have large strike zones; others are a bit smaller. Some umpires give pitchers the high strike, while others give an extra couple of inches outside. While we don’t need to know the tendencies of each and every umpire, it’s wise to take notice of the handful that have proven to make life very difficult for pitchers.
