We had a couple of contenders in last week’s Genesis Invitational, but Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeua both fell short on Sunday. We’ll try to pick up a winner this week with golf betting picks for 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship as golfers travel south of the border to Club de Golf Chapultepec.

WGC-Mexico Course Notes – Club de Golf Chapultepec

As Justin Van Zuiden (AKA stlcardinals84) points out in his PGA GPP Breakdown (exclusive to PGA premium members), due to its high elevation, Club de Golf Chapultepec doesn’t play nearly as long as it appears on the scorecard. Club Chapultepec plays closer to 6,700 or 6,800 yards than it does a 7,300-yard course. That means all types of golfers are in play this week.

Like all WGC events, this one is a no-cut event. That means the world’s best will have four rounds to move up the leaderboard regardless of how they come out of the gate in rounds 1 and 2. This makes things a bit different for both DFS and sports betting.

Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Rose will sit this one out, but it’s still a star-studded field atop betting boards at legal US sportsbooks. With four rounds to play, will the cream rise to the top?

2020 WGC-Mexico Championship Golf Odds

Surprise, surprise. It is Rory McIlroy +500 and Dustin Johnson +600 as WGC Mexico Championship favorites, followed by Jon Rahm +1000, Justin Thomas +1000, Adam Scott +1600 and Webb Simpson +1600. It’s tough to bet against either of the first two guys. We saw Johnson soar up the leaderboard after a slow start last week. Despite this course playing relatively short, Johnson will try to win his third WGC-Mexico Championship at Chapultepec in the past four seasons. What has become a theme in this betting series, I have my eyes set on a few golfers further down the betting board.

WGC-Mexico Championship Golf Betting Picks

Hideki Matsuyama +2000 – In 2020, Matsuyama ranks first in the field in strokes gained tee-to-green and strokes gained around-the-green. He’s coming off a Top 5 at the Genesis, and I think +2000 is the best value out of the top golfers in this week’s field.

Abraham Ancer +7000 – I liked Ancer before I saw his odds at
DraftKings Sportsbook. Ancer is originally from Mexico, so he’ll be more than comfortable playing there this week. Ancer already has two Top 10 finishes this year, including a runner up at The American Express a month ago. And don’t let his mediocre finish (T43) at the Genesis fool you. Ancer battled back from a first-round 76 with a an impressive 67 on Friday to make the cut. Make sure to bet on Ancer at Draftkings. His odds are closer to +5000 elsewhere.

Sunjae Im +6600 – DraftKings gives us another solid price tag on Sunjae Im. Im is one of the premier young talents on tour, and I’m not bothered by him missing the cut last week. A few days rest could do some good for the 21-year-old.

Byeong Hun An +9000 – Hun An missed out on Riviera’s Poa annua greens last week, but for good reason. Hun An was awaiting the arrival of a baby boy. Before An and his wife introduced a new life to the world last Saturday, An had just finished ninth at the Waste Management Open. An’s top-10 finish came all while losing 1.4 strokes putting. There’s nothing like the added pressure of caring for another human to finally help some putts fall.

Carlos Ortiz +15000 – Like Ancer, Ortiz is another golfer returning to his home country this week. Ortiz has only missed one cut in his last 10 events. In the fall, he had three top-five finishes. The weakest part of Ortiz’s game is off-the-tee, but it should be more of a level playing field on a course that plays a bit shorter. It’ll be an uphill battle in this strong of a field — he is 150-to-1 for a reason, after all — but Ortiz can take advantage of this course with his above-average approach shots and short game. Be sure to sign up at William Hill for the best golf betting odds for Ortiz.
