On Monday night, Tua Tagovailoa tweeted a training video showing the 2020 NFL Draft prospect’s progress injury that kept him out of the College Football Playoff a few months ago.

Before dislocating his right hip against Mississippi State, Tagovailoa, who has the best college football QBR in the history of the metric, was one of the highest-touted quarterback prospects in recent memory.

The hype began in 2017 when Tagovaolia led a come-from-behind victory in the 2017 National Championship, which included a game-winning touchdown pass from the true freshman. As a sophomore, Alabama made it back to the championship game with Tagovaolia as the starter.

The quarterback’s early success made him both a presumed Heisman Trophy winner and no. 1 overall draft pick early his junior season. Some even thought teams like the Miami Dolphins would actively tank for the prodigy.

Of course, that was before the rise of Joe Burrow and a season-ending injury that changed the course of Tua’s football career.

Tua Tagovailoa Injury History

Even though Tagovailoa will enter the NFL Draft Heisman-less, his college career is decorated with accomplishments and accolades. But his time in college also leaves questions regarding his durability.

Despite all of the wins, yards, touchdowns and school records, injuries hindered Tagavailoa in each of his two seasons as an Alabama starter.

His first significant injury occurred in the 2018 SEC Championship game as one of his linemen fell onto his ankle. A TightRope procedure would help Tua return and play in the College Football Playoff Semifinals a month later before losing in the National Championship. Tagovailoa struggled in the loss, throwing the most interceptions of his career.

Tagovailoa’s ankle required another procedure in 2019 after he suffered a high ankle sprain against Tennessee. He’d sit out only one game, returning to play against LSU. The outcome was a loss and the worst completion percentage of his career.

Unfortunately, the quarterback’s injury woes weren’t quite finished. One week later, Tagovailoa would leave the field bloodied, and with his football career in question.

But as shown Monday night, albeit a brief 10-second video, Tagovailoa is moving fast and throwing bombs.

It’s unlikely Tua will be selected no. 1 overall like we thought this time last year, but will an NFL team gamble and trade up to get their hands on the injury-riddled quarterback with the no. 2 or no. 3 pick? Or might he fall to the Dolphins with the fifth-overall pick?

Tua Tagovailoa 2020 NFL Draft Odds & Props

+2000 to be the No. 1 Overall Pick at PointsBet

The Cincinnati Bengals have the no. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and are looking for their franchise quarterback. The majority of observers think that quarterback will be Ohio native, Joe Burrow, an Ohio native.

Oddsmakers at online sports betting sites agree, listing the Heisman Trophy winner as a -3500 odds-on favorite to be the no. 1 pick. If Tagovailoa hadn’t been injured, this would likely be an entirely different conversation, but all signs point toward Burrow returning to his home state.

+210 to be the No. 2 Overall Pick at FanDuel

These odds are a bit shorter, but if Tagovailoa does get selected in this spot, it will likely be the result of a trade since the Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins with the no. 16 pick in 2019. Most mock drafts and oddsmakers predict the Redskins will stick with staying at no. 2 and drafting Ohio State defensive lineman Chase Young.

-110 to be the No. 3 Overall Pick at Fanduel

Oddsmakers at FanDuel think Tagovailoa will be drafted with the no. 3 overall pick, currently owned by the Detroit Lions. Similarly, PointsBet sets the betting line for Tagovailoa’s draft position at Over/Under 3.5. If a team drafts him before the fourth pick, it more than likely means they traded up to do so.

After trading Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles, the current assumption is that the Lions will fill their void at cornerback with Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah.

-400 Second QB Drafted at DraftKings Sportsbook

This or +100 to be the second offensive player drafted is my favorite way to bet on Tagovailoa’s NFL Draft props.

Sure, Justin Herbert and Jordan Love are both trending in the right direction according to NFL pundits, but I simply don’t see a team passing up on the talent that is Tua Tagovailoa. If he can stay healthy, and there are reasons to think he can (his injuries were from contact), then Tagovailoa has arguably the highest ceiling of any quarterback in the NFL Draft. Neither Herbert or Love will be cutting in line.

Additionally, betting on Tagovailoa to be the second quarterback off the draft board rather than gambling on what exact team he will go to protects us from something less predictable. Though I believe Tua will be a Miami Dolphin, it wouldn’t shock me if the temptation of winning the Tagovailoa sweepstakes becomes too much for an unexpected suiter.
