  • NFL, Week 1

I wanted to do a full RB and WR write up for the under the radar guys, or guys who just haven't been mentioned much. I may take more than 15 minutes and do just that, but the information below is what I brainstormed out in 15-20. I doubt this information is going to be extremely valuable to many people, if any. But I've found that writing this stuff out actually helps me, even if it's information that's already there in my head or that I've read/went over. When you can collect your thoughts and write it out on paper, it gives you a different outlook. Going beyond the all analytic research and throwing in some homerism, personal logic, etc.; honestly, try it if you haven't. A few guys that have not been, or rarely been, mentioned at all at the RB position: "(player-popup #paul-perkins)Paul Perkins":/players/paul-perkins-35545/"(player-popup #shane-vereen)Shane Vereen":/players/shane-vereen-11733 (I'm a Giants fan so this is probably the only valuable info you'll get out of me) The Giants identity has changed since Coughlin left. Last year the Giants threw the ball 61% of the time and 95% of their formations utilized the "11" personnel (3 WR, 1 TE). That is a real statistic and one that made the Giants offense predictable and unproductive in 2016. McAdoo has made it a point in his pressers this offseason to let everyone know they need to run the ball better. The Giants signed "(player-popup #rhett-ellison)Rhett Ellison":/players/rhett-ellison-13658, a top 3 blocking TE in the NFL, and also went out and got a couple of true FB's in "(player-popup #jacob-huesman)Jacob Huesman":/players/jacob-huesman-36274 and "(player-popup #shane-smith)Shane Smith":/players/shane-smith-36961. Huesman was cut and Smith was retained. The Giants had 0 FB's on their roster last year, and their TE position was dismal. What's the point? 1. Added and kept a true FB on the final 53 2. Added a top flight blocking TE, and drafted a receiving TE who is developing as a blocker. They will run plenty of 2 TE sets. 3. Giants OL is not good. They will absolutely need to establish a running game to open up PA and protect Eli. "(player-popup #paul-perkins)Paul Perkins":/players/paul-perkins-35545 has undoubtedly taken over as the Giants #1 back this year. However, we will still see "(player-popup #shane-vereen)Shane Vereen":/players/shane-vereen-11733 on passing downs and I think "(player-popup #orleans-darkwa)Orleans Darkwa":/players/orleans-darkwa-18130 will be given a legit shot to eat into some of Perkin's carries as he had a decent preseason. McAdoo has also publicly offered Perkins constructive criticism, hinting that his vision needs to improve, and that there's been carries where he's lost potential yards, due to his lack of making guys miss in the open field. That said, Perkins is still the guy. I have 0 shares of Perkins. The Cowboys allowed the least amount of yards per game on the ground last year (83.5). BUT they also were tested the least, teams ran on them 340 times, an extremely low number and this had to do with the fact that teams were always playing from behind. I don't see it being the same story this year. The Giants will still try to establish the run game and Perkins could be a really sneaky, throw one at the wall, option. "(player-popup #frank-gore)Frank Gore":/players/frank-gore-11670 Gore doesn't get much respect. He ranked 12th in overall Fantasy Points last year (season long numbers, but gives you an idea). I think I read that Pagano said they weren't ruling Luck out week 1, but that's just talk, there's no way he plays. If he does, someone can call me out. So that leaves "(player-popup #scott-tolzien)Scott Tolzien":/players/scott-tolzien-17005 under center. Gore's competition consists of vet "(player-popup #robert-turbin)Robert Turbin":/players/robert-turbin-13571 and 4th round rookie "(player-popup #marlon-mack)Marlon Mack":/players/marlon-mack-36932. Turbin. Turbin is a 5 year pro who averages under 4 yards per carry for his career. Mack had a quiet preseason and he's 3rd on the depth chart behind Turbin. Gore is in his 12th year and will certainly not get all the carries, Turbin will take some. But Gore is still valuable with Luck out. The Colts will need to run the ball in order to stay competitive against the Rams. Rams ranked 17th in yards allowed per game last year and as a very young defense who didn't see a lot of turnover, they most likely will get better this year. Still, Gore is going to get touches and he'll get the goalline carries as well. He has rushed for 1,000+ yards five times since 2011. I fully expect Gore to be the bell cow for the Colts. Still I can't see Gore putting up more than 10-12 Fantasy Points on FanDuel. He's one of those guys who probably maxes out around 17 points, but his floor is around 3...in a game like this against the Rams that is. "(player-popup #thomas-rawls)Thomas Rawls":/players/thomas-rawls-21809 He's being overlooked because of Lacy and Prosise. Carroll recently said "I consider both Lacy and Rawls starters". It's a crappy quote and of course it's something Carroll, and a lot of other head coaches, would say. Either way, Rawls has been the lead back throughout the entire preseason (ahead of both Lacy and Prosise). He missed the last 2 games due to a "minor ankle injury". I don't think it's anything and he'll be fresh for week 1. He's probably a bad pick on DK GPP's since Prosise is going to play on passing downs, and then Lacy will cut into his carries as well. They do however face the Packers who were 25th in yards allowed per game last year. They were actually among the top teams in the league in TD's allowed (They only allowed 11 to RB's all year). They also re-signed DT Nick Perry, and added some other middle of the road defensive players. Nothing crazy enough to make a big impact on their rush defense. Since Rawls is probably splitting carries with Lacy, and will lose time to Prosise on passing downs, he would be a tough pick. I still think his ceiling is somewhere around 20 FD points but his floor is the issue. It's low. "(player-popup #duke-johnson)Duke Johnson":/players/duke-johnson-21581 Johnson could be a good sleeper pick, he clearly is going to be < 5% owned. Let me preface this by saying that I have a personal bias. I've always loved the Duke. Johnson is the only RB in the league to have at least 500 yards receiving in each of the last 2 years. However, he also has only scored 3 TD's (Ew). And then there's Isiah Crowell, who is no doubt the #1 guy, and the guy who will see the larger share of touches. Here's the thing though. The Browns WR coach was touting Johnson just a week or two ago (forgot when I read it) saying that he is just as good at catching the ball as any receiver they have. There's been a lot of talk trying to give Johnson confidence in the role as a pass catcher. Since the Browns now are lacking severely at WR talent and depth, Johnson is going to get looks as a slot receiver. Hue Jackson (He's the Browns Head Coach in case you didn't know :) ) said the following at the end of July: "He is just doing everything, honestly," Jackson said when asked if Johnson was spending more time with the receivers. "He can catch out of the backfield. ... We line him up in different places where we can get an advantage with him. He is a weapon for us. We are just trying to use him as much as we can, and we do." Was reading an article that was very informative and there's good evidence to suggest that Johnson could see somewhere around a 15% target share, similar to the role of "(player-popup #danny-woodhead)Danny Woodhead":/players/danny-woodhead-11702 or "(player-popup #theo-riddick)Theo Riddick":/players/theo-riddick-16555. So Johnson may be a good punt play on DK, but may not be as valuable on FD. **If you actually were determining if you should use Johnson as a punt, make sure you take into consideration that the Browns just named Kizer their starting QB. Kizer LOVES to throw the ball downfield and that is not what Johnson is. I honestly think the Browns want to get Johnson involved out of the slot and out of the backfield on passing downs, but even if that is the gameplan, it all comes down to Kizer and his ability to be a versatile passer, not just a downfield thrower.** Other RB's I like, who there's little talk about: "(player-popup #tevin-coleman)Tevin Coleman":/players/tevin-coleman-21723 (11 TD's last year despite missing 3 games) CJ Anderson (Booker still nursing a broken wrist) WR One guy that just keeps coming to mind that isn't being mentioned is Buffalo WR "(player-popup #zay-jones)Zay Jones":/players/zay-jones-36889. Well..I just did a quick Google search and Matthew Berry is touting Jones as the #1 Fantasy WR amongst rookies, so I may be way off on that one; I didn't go through all 30 or so pages here. But I think overall, he's a guy who is going to be under the radar. No write up here, just saying this guy is the NCAA's all time leader in receptions and "(player-popup #jordan-matthews)Jordan Matthews":/players/jordan-matthews-18238 is hurt. Even if he plays, will it matter? Go Football! Thanks for letting me write out some thoughts here. I usually do stuff like this and just go back to it in my notepad to read myself. I'm hoping to hear some good week 1 success stories from board members. Hopefully one of us (or more!) is $1,000,000 richer come this time next week. Good luck!
