We are locked! Official payouts are below:

    1.) 6000
    2.) 3500
    3.) 2500
    4.) 1500
    5.) 1000
    6.) 750
    7.) 500
    8.) 150

In addition, all finishing spots will receive an RG t-shirt, good luck!

It’s that time of year again! This will be the 3rd instance of the bracket pool ran by me here on RG. First year we had 94 entries and last year we had 127 – this year is certainly exceeding that.

It is a $100 buy-in, 5 entry max bracket pool ran on Yahoo with Fibonacci scoring (2-3-5-8-13-21).

I’ll start it off as usual with 5…

Just sent PMs/Emails and updated OP so check your inboxes…as for the questions

    - It does not include the play-in games, so you can enter up until 11:30 or so on Thursday. I believe Yahoo locks the brackets at noon, so I would like to give time for you to get into the pool and pick the bracket if you want to enter around that time, so around 11:30 I will be looking to close off entries.

blimes – No bonus picks for upsets, just straight Fibonacci scoring

DJW – it depends on final number of entries, if it stays at 127 (it looks to be a lock to be decently far above that at this point), it will be the same payout structure, but depend on how many more we get, I will add other payment spots

PMs sent, will do another update around 3am tonight and another one tomorrow at 11am

Also I should clarify – the payouts posted on the OP are last year’s payouts. RG has not offered the same for this year at this time, so those bonuses should not be assumed

This is off topic but I didn’t know where else to post it. I am having an argument with someone who set up a pool with the rules posted below. Does everyone agree that this point system is terrible? If I pick #8 Wisconsin to win in first round I would get 9 points round plus seed 1+8. If i pick #1 Nova to win championship I get 7 points.. round points 6 + 1 for seed= 7 points…. Anyone have any insight on how to exploit this scoring system?

First Round: Each correct pick is worth 1 point. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.
Second Round: Each correct pick is worth 2 points. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.
Sweet 16 ® : Each correct pick is worth 3 points. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.
Elite 8 ® : Each correct pick is worth 4 points. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.
Final Four ® : Each correct pick is worth 5 points. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.
Championship: Each correct pick is worth 6 points. The seed of the winning team is added to the correct pick total.

I actually enjoy this scoring system as it rewards you getting upsets correct and make brackets less chalky. The best way to exploit this is to pick a fair number of upsets in round 1, especially in close games where you don’t expect the winner to get a second victory (i.e. pick more 12 & 11 seeds to win as those games are usually close anyway and you’d expect them to likely lose the next round to the 3 or 4 seed anyway)

Any team seeded 8 and higher team that I thought would lose in round 2, I would pick to get upset in round 1. For instance, say I really like SMU and think they will beat Baylor in round 2. I am definitely picking New Mexico St. in round 1 over Baylor because the reward of 15 possible points that I get from them winning are worth the risk of Baylor beating them and only getting 4 points, since I think Baylor is going to lose in round 2 anyways.
