Hi everyone, Nik here. We’re excited to share with you a big change to our NBA formatting for this season.

If there’s one consistent frustration we’ve heard from NBA players, it’s the handling of inactive players. Whether it’s Pop late scratching LMA or a top-secret undisclosed mystery injury, it’s an awful experience when you’re drawing dead before the games even start. We call these events “avoidable zeroes”, and they’re the absolute worst.

Over the summer we prototyped and tested a few different solutions and one thing became crystal clear – if we were going to make a change, we needed to make sure that the change was a fair change for everyone, and didn’t disadvantage one user segment while giving an advantage to another. I obviously can’t speak for every user, and while I’ve got a very loving (and patient!) wife at home, she’s got a limit to how much I’m glued to phone when we’re together. I’ve got friends who have kids, work nights, love the gym, and a whole host of different reasons why late swap simply doesn’t work for them. The division on the topic on the RG forums alone convinced us that it wasn’t the solution.

Instead, we’re announcing a simple, yet powerful change: we’re dropping your lowest score. Call it best ball, call it a gimme, call it whatever you’d like. Bottom line, if a player puts up a zero, the score won’t count. Positions stay the same, scoring stays the same; we’ll simply only count your top 8. You don’t have to stay glued to your phone; you can pick that West Coast GTD with confidence and even he doesn’t go, you’re still in the running.

Give it a try, and feel free to shoot me any feedback: nik.bonaddio@fanduel.com. Good luck!

This coming season on Fanduel, you drop your lowest score. Pick 9 players. Drop your lowest score. WTF? How about give me the cheapest guy there is and I take a zero and load up elsewhere. Yep, I’ll take that strategy!

Designed to mitigate against late scratches.

If you do have a late scratch (or foul trouble, injury) you’ve screwed yourself by just picking a random.

Fanduel is beyond dumb. There are so many issues with this. For example, if I am in the money with a score of 300 (lowest scoring player 20 points) and the guy behind me, out of the money, has a score of 295 (lowest scoring player 14), he jumps ahead of me and I lose? Wtf?

And to your point, Fanduel has been horrible with their NBA pricing. To think they will fix it to go along with this disastrous idea is laughable. All this did for me was make the full time switch to DK easier and permanent.

Is that how all NBA main slate FD contests are going to be now?

Where are you guys reading about this ridiculous idea?

    Fanduel Email….prepare yourself

  • CuttyTheInsane

No idea why they won’t just implement a late swap, but ok. At first I didn’t like this idea, but the more I think about it, I actually do. We shall see, I suppose.

    Thanks.

I didn’t get it. I think I blocked FD emails about a year ago, because they were constantly spamming and filling up my Inbox.

    I like it

Why not just go with late swap? Why give out a free square? So this means I go with a low salary punt, if they do well great, if they don’t, then who cares, it was a free square. I don’t like it.

    I like this solution.

Just have to evolve and play with a different strategy.

Just got the Fanduel email….So let me guess this straight, out of the 9 players, the lowest scoring 1 will be dropped making 8 the deciding factor across the whole contest even if someone dosent have a player who was pulled out of the lineup/injury etc? It will always be based on the top 8 scoring players? is that right?

Nah, too many issues with this, hopefully it won’t last the full season.

Interesting…Definitley going to be some different strategies for GPPs with this new rule

I’m sure people will try to jam in players with a bare minimum player a good amount of the time

I think you will see that most people will now just roster a min. priced guy at the thinnest position(essentially take a “zero”), and then use the extra salary to load up the other 8 players. Just my 2 cents….

Please clarify! Are you dropping the lowest score out of nine, or are you only dropping a score of zero?

Kinda like taking the guy that the pricing screw up and his salary is listed as $890 instead of $8900 lol.

It’s the lowest score. Meaning you build a lineup of 9 and the top 8 scores count.
