Another year and another fantasy sports bill filed in the Alabama legislature. This year its House Bill 361 by Rep Kyle South. It has eight co-sponsors. One of which is the Speaker of the House. If you live in Alabama now is the time to contact your rep and senator and ask for their support of this bill. I think this will be the 3rd of 4th time they have tried so don’t get your hopes up.

URGENT THE ALABAMA HOUSE COULD VOTE ON HOUSE BILL 361 AS EARLY AS TOMORROW (5/8). PLEASE CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND ASK THEM TO VOTE YES ON THIS BILL! YOU CAN USE THE FANTASY FOR ALL LINK TO CONTACT THEM IF YOU LIKE

Update 5/10/19 The Alabama House of Representatives passed HB 361 this past Wednesday. The bill passed by a fairly large margin (74-22). The bill will now go to a Senate Committee where it will begin the next stage of the legislative process. There is no timetable when the committee will here this bill. If you haven’t already, Please use the link above to contact your Senator and ask them to pass this legislation.

UPDATE 5/24 The Senate failed to vote on the fantasy sports bill yesterday. It was up for debate nearing final passage when Senator Arthur Orr began asking a bunch of lame questions. He “ had some issues” with the bill so it was carried over at the call of the chair. We are running out of time as the session may end a week from today. The bill will not appear on any calendar so it will be up to the sponsor to call it back up for debate. I believe he will try it again but don’t know which day. The Senate meets Tuesday evening.

5/28 The bill has been passed by the Senate with one amendment, It will go back to the House where they will have to concur with the amendment. If they do, they are expected to, then it goes to the governor.

5/28 UPDATE The House has concurred with the Senate amendment. The bill is on its way to the governors desk.

5/31 According to Senator Tom Whatley, the Governor has signed the bill.

Senate is where it has died previously, but getting the through the house is certainly a step that needs to happen at some point. I’ve been told it’s a got a good chance of making it this year, so let’s cross our fingers it gets to the finish line.

So far the overall discussion in the house has been favorable. We are debating final passage.

Why all these amendments? Good thing or just stalling the vote?

  • unageo09

It was a stall. They had the votes all along. It did pass 70 something to 20 something. Much wider margin than the last time it passed the House. I like the cheers from the background when it passed. I think Rep South done a great job up there but again I think he knew he had the votes so he just had to stand there and let it play out. On to the senate!!

  • cdabest

When does the senate vote on it?

  • manoffewwords

Thanks for info. My good friend Jim Carns keeps voting NO,as some of same people from last year. Tired of going to Ga. every week.

  • unageo09

It will have to go to a senate committee. If the committee votes it out as favorable it will go to the full senate for s vote. Hopefully this happens within the next two weeks

Appreciate the updates. Keeping my fingers crossed…

do we have any information on whether this is going to the Senate in this session? If it dies before the session is done, then this was a useless bill

  • unageo09

The bill will get sent to a senate committee. Hopefully we will see some movement in the Senate within the next two weeks. We are just over halfway in the session so there is plenty of time. There are no guarantees in politics though. The Senate was in disarray yesterday afternoon. They need to settle down over there because it was pretty heated.

There is really no reason to get excited about this bill in the House. Some type of Fantasy Sports Bill has been passed by the house twice if I’m not mistaken, it’s the State Senate that’s the problem they have never even discussed Fantasy Sports, am i correct about this? Did they not just throw last years bill to the curb without as much as a one minute discussion?

Two years ago there was lengthy discussion in the Senate. It was carried over by the sponsor for further consideration but it did not come back up before the Legislative session concluded. Last year, The Senate killed it before it even started. However, we already knew that was going to happen.

The bill is scheduled for a
Senate Tourism Committee hearing tomorrow morning at 9:30.

Thanks for update. With only 35 Senate members, I hope this is somewhat representative of final vote. Hopefully this will not get stalled out by a few members.

  • cdabest

Thanks for the updates @unageo09 …. If the bill passes the Senate, what is the next step? Can you lay out how many more hurdles the bill has to get through?

  • unageo09

If the bill passes the Senate it goes to the governors desk. She can sign it into law, veto it and send it back to the legislature, or not sign it and after a few days it becomes law. We’re basically one vote and a signature away from this being legal again. Word is the bill is gaining momentum and support.

great to hear! thanks for the update…

Just looked at map on legal sports report. With Iowa just approving dfs,we will be only state east of freaking Arizona without some form of dfs. MADNESS.

  • unageo09

Only one person spoke out against the bill in committee and he was cut off rather quickly and the committee vote ensued. From what I read it was a fairly painless meeting.

  • golfer32

Kyle South was on WJOX Friday morning and sounded fairly confident it would pass and be signed by the governor

  • cdabest

Just received another text saying it would be voted on “soon”… any idea when that might be”?

  • unageo09

I heard maybe Wednesday or Thursday.

  • unageo09

It didn’t happen today so maybe tomorrow. Starting to get a little worried with the stall tactics being used by the democrats.

  • dredaay

Well it’s the Republicans fault it had to be voted on in the first place, and effectively killed the bill last year at almost 9 pm on The last day of the session. Grade A stalling.

  • unageo09

It came up for debate but Senator Arthur Orr stalled and forced a carry over. Gonna try again next week.
