The Alabama legislature will meet for the first time for the regular session next Tuesday on February 7th. Senate Bill 28, Alabama Fantasy Sports Contests Act, is the piece of legislation that I think most of us in Alabama who want DFS to come back to the state are most interested in. The bill is sponsored by Senator Thomas Whatley ®. You can read about the Bill if you want: wanthttps://legiscan.com/AL/text/SB28/2017 I will try to update this thread as the bill makes progress during the session and hopefully passes. Now is the time to email and call your reps and let them know you would like their support for this bill!

    Update

Alabama House Bill 354 could possible come up for vote on April 18, 2017. The House meets at 1:00 pm.

http://www.legislature.state.al.us/aliswww/ISD/HseChamberAudio.aspx House Chamber live audio. The live stream should start around 1:00 p.m.

    Update 2: April 18, 2017

HB 354 Passes by narrow margin in House after voting machine malfunction. Now will go to Senate for their vote.

    Update 3: May 14, 2017

HB 354 still awaits a vote in the Alabama Senate. The Senate convenes on Tuesday May 16th at 2:00 p.m. It is not known at this time if the bill will come up for vote on this day. This is the last week of the 2017 Legislative session.

FINAL UPDATE: Alabama House Bill number 354 Fantasy Sports Contest Act died in the Senate this afternoon on May 19, 2017. The current legislative session is now over and no further action will be taken.

Thanks for updates. Hopefully they will see that there are potentially 700K players in state . Is there any feel about the way the vote may go?

  • unageo09

Nothing happened today best I can tell regarding our bill of interest. The legislature is off the next two weeks for spring break and won’t meet again until April 4.

  • ramagosr

So nothing happened I guess? There was a good piece on AL.com this past week about it, and certainly that level of press is a hopeful sign.

Nothing has happened. The legislator is starting week 2 of Spring Break. It will be next Tuesday for they meet again. I like that the reps are getting phone calls in support of the bill. Hopefully they can pass it.

This bill is not a sure thing guys. In Kentucky and Georgia their fantasy bills did not pass and don’t forget that the Southern Baptist Assoc. resides right here in Alabama and if you take the time to look, a lot of our state Reps. receive money from them. So don’t be surprised if this bill runs out of steam. I hope it passes but there is a real chance it want even come up for a vote or is voted down.

  • unageo09

House meets in the morning at 10:30. Hopefully 354 comes up. I just want them to vote on it. If they vote it down, then so be it, but just give it a chance. Tennessee and Mississippi have passed laws so hopefully Alabama will be next. I’m just afraid they may not even get to it.

  • unageo09

HB 354 did not come up today. The House recessed around 2:00 this afternoon. They will not meet again until next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of today’s meeting we are halfway through the legislative session. There are only 15 meetings left.

I hope they don’t get bogged down in trying to impeach the Governor, and put this on the back burner, and it not get brought up to a vote!!

I’ve told my representatives if they don’t vote to pass this bill… I will do everything I can to make sure they don’t get re-elected!

This is ridiculous! This is supposed to be the United States of America! The land of the free!! Not the land of rules and regulations that RESTRICT our individual liberties and freedoms!

  • rholub023

I sent a tweet to Senator Whatley to hopefully spark some interest, and to bring some light to the current situation! My twitter handle is @ryanpholub and feel free to add some fuel to the fire by retweeting or sending him a tweet yourself!!!

I just heard that the state does not plan on acting on any gaming measures this year. Our new governor is not pro gambling so it looks like the fantasy bills have been shelved. Sorry guys but from what I can tell for now nothing is going to happen, so another year with the people of Alabama not being able to play fantasy sports.

They were working off a special calendar today and on Tuesday. The bill was not on the schedule for either date. I haven’t heard anything about whether or not it will come up for a vote or not but we still have 13 sessions to go.

  • unageo09

Update It is on the special order calendar for next Tuesday April 18th. It is the second order on the calendar. The House meets at 1:00 p.m. Maybe we can get some info then.

Just because it is on the calendar doesn’t mean they’ll get to it. EMAIL YOUR REPS!

Not trying to be a downer but I’m good friends with one of our legislators ( I will not give his name) but he told me that with our newly appointed governor and her opinion on how the state needs to grow it’s revenue by adding jobs within, not by gambling bills. He told me that the fantasy bills would not be coming up in the any of the 12 sessions that are left and even if they did he does not believe that she would sign the bills and without her signature they don’t pass. I’m just telling you guys what he told me when I called and asked him what he believed would happen with the 3 bills that are out there and of course that also includes any lottery bills as well. He told me that he don’t see any of it moving forward. I hope he’s wrong but he’s been in Montgomery awhile so he knows whats going on. I’m not trying to crush peoples hopes of these bills passing I want it to pass just like all of you do but it’s not looking good.

  • unageo09

The other bills are obviously dead regarding DFS because no action has been taken since they were sent to committee. The lottery bills are dead as well because they are still in committee too. I want to hear the discussion on HB 354 then we’ll have a good idea where it stands. If they adopt to work off the special calendar Tuesday there is a good chance it will come up. Tell your legislative friend (house or senate, if the house) they need to work longer than 2 hours a day. What a joke. If we can just get the bill of the governors desk she doesn’t even have to sign it. As long as the session doesn’t end before the time is up (6 days) it becomes law.

My dad was told by his representative yesterday that he expected a vote on it next week (either Tuesday or Thursday….can’t remember for sure). We will see, but certainly crossing my fingers it gets done.

  • CompleteCrest321

I’ve asked him about their short meetings in the past and he said they also have committee meetings that they attend and that these meeting have to happen so that they can get the bills to the legislative floor and that the committee meets are where the bills are drawn out and amendments are added or rewrote. So most of the time by the time it gets to the legislative floor the second time it’s ready for a vote. So it just look like they are only working 2 to 3 hour days. And he’s in the Senate so hopefully the bill will make it to him (he’s told me he has no problem with fantasy sports in Alabama).

I’ve heard from a couple different sources that the bill is supposed to hit the House floor on Tuesday for a vote. PLEASE spread the word in the Alabama.

this is what I’ve heard as well. I’ve made a couple of calls already this morning and plan on making another one later this afternoon. If you’re in Alabama be sure to call your elected officials. I reached out to Holtzclaw’s office asking to speak with him. his secretary said she’ll schedule something for later today if he can fit it. I’ve found them very approachable and willing to speak on the phone in the past. Be sure to make your voice heard. These are the people that are there to represent YOU and your views. Don’t let them go to vote without knowing what YOU want.

    good luck!

  • ramagosr

Emailed and called my rep and all those that cover my county and county my business is in. Not optimistic but doing my part!

  • blailock

Fingers crossed. Let’s get this thing passed.

  • ramagosr

God I’m gonna sleep poorly tonight, and then we’ll lose by like 50 votes in this crazy Christian conservative swamp.

  • unageo09

Remember, this is just the House voting. If it passes the House then it has to go to the Senate where it will have to pass there and come back to the house for final adoption. I’m hoping it can get a favorable vote in the house and the Senate will follow.

  • ramagosr

From talking with one of the AL state senators I’m acquainted with, the house is the harder one for a bill like this. We shall see.

In most states it goes straight to the governor’s desk after passing both chambers. Unless it is amended.

Working off the special calendar it should be coming up next. Currently discussing a bill about passing a civics test to graduate high school.
