Hey there everybody! I’m Bobby Firestone, one of the Rotogrinders hosts, writers and a professional DFS player. I go by the handle ‘BobbyFi’ on most DFS sites and am ranked in the top-100 overall. The fine people at Rotogrinders have asked me to do an AMA because apparently you good folks tweeted my name as someone who they wanted to do it.. So, thank you and here I am!

    Some basic info about me:

    • I started working at Rotogrinders in September of 2016.

    • I started playing DFS professionally in July of 2015. Before that I have had a variety of different professions, from Sales, Real Estate , Working on a boat, Working for a nonprofit focused on mental health and I was a professional poker player for 7 years. There are a lot of others but I don’t want it to take up the whole thread.

    • Grew up spending about half my life in Santa Barbara/Los Angeles and half overseas until I was 20 and still travel a lot.

    • I stopped going to school to start working before I finished high school. I was 13 but would have been a senior as I was home schooled most of my life making it easy to get ahead.

    • I’m a huge Laker, Dodger and Bruin fan!

    • I have a terrific 11 year old daughter named Karina.

    • I have sailed around the world a number of times.

    • I play mostly almost exclusively GPP’s.

    • I’ve qualified 5 entries in 4 different live finals but most of my big wins have come elsewhere.

Anyway, shoot me any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them throughout the week. Thanks again for your interest!

    Let’s have some fun!!!

Hey Bobby, thanks for doing this! My question: How do you determine how to attack each slate? For example, what factors make you decide what tournaments to play, how much bankroll to put in, how many lineups to make, etc?

Thank you Joe! It really is slate dependent. I almost always play 1 to 5 in the big GPPs but how much I play usually is determined how much the teams/players I like are going to be chalky. Also, After big wins I tend to play more and bigger.. Hot streaks are a real thing :)

It is hard to win if you don’t get pitching right! Having said that a low owned bat with Multi HR’s with a big stack is usually what wins you a GPP. Basically, They are both necessary!

Best advice in building a bank roll?

Thanks for taking the time out to answer my questions. What’s a great strategy to take down a single entry mlb gpp? What’s a great strategy for mlb cash games? Both questions are for fanduel. Thanks

    Hi Bobby,

What was your most important step before turning pro? Were there, if any, mindset roadblocks you had to hurdle before deciding to go full time? Thanks

  • Coleistheman

First, thank you for all of your contributions to RG! When entering my cash lineup in a tournament, which is the best? Single entry, maybe?

Have you always spoken very quickly?

I noticed in some videos you slowed down. Was this a conscious decision?

    Bobby, thanks for doing this!

    2 questions for you.
    1. The last month or two I have thought (key word) I had the good hitters…stats line up, ballpark is good, crush the pitches the opposing player will likely throw (thanks Plate IQ)…and I get hit with variance, 0-5 with 3 Ks from 4 different guys :) can you relate….What are your top 3 tips for GPP baseball batter selection? I feel I am close, I just can’t get that 200+ point score needed to win.
    2. Craziest experience from your sailings around the world in 5 words or less.

  • Thedub784

One more…do you use your own model? How long did it take for you to create? Looking in to playing around with one.

As a GPP player you have to be contrarian in order to gain an edge. That being said, how do you decide how to be contrarian in a smart/strategical way instead of just being different for the sake of being different?

You mentioned playing poker professionally. Could you go more into that? Were you an online player who transitioned to live? Were you a cash or tourney player mostly? What game types did you tend to play (ie NL Holdem, PLO etc)?

I was mostly a tournament poker player but did very well in live cash games. Played online mostly but also played live tournaments all over the world. Preferred the European tour for fun purposes and because the fields were softer. I was really good at NLH, PLO and O Hi/Lo.

Winning! Haha, JK. There are many different ways to build a bankroll in DFS. I was lucky in that I started winning NBA GPP’s right away and then went from there. I think even for tournament players building a bankroll through cash games on smaller sites like Fantasydraft (where there is often overlay) is a great way to start. I would say you should bet almost twice as much on Cash games vs tournaments on a given night while trying to build your roll.

Thanks Dbull! A strategy I feel is much more necessary on Fanduel than Draftkings is stacking teams to the max and usually double stacking (stacking 2 teams) is the way i try to go. The correlating plays are so much more valuable on FD because of the value of runs/walks and RBI’s. Also you want one of your two stacks to be at least a bit off the board. Ownership is the most important thing in GPP’s. For pitching try to make sure you take someone with a reasonably high k rate and or has a likely chance at a win and Quality start.

Interesting question.. There were absolutely obstacles! Playing high stakes on a lower bankroll than many of my counterparts was difficult but I think made me a better player. Dealing with swings is extremely tough and a major part of playing GPP’s. My poker background I feel really helped me here as swings were already a big part of my life. I was very fortunate in winning big the month after going pro so that helped.

Thank you Cole! If you were entering your cash lineup in a GPP which is viable in Baseball especially on DK, I think it is fine to enter in a single or multi entry GPP. I don’t think it makes much of a difference. However, for safety you may want to go single entry.

Thank You! Variance is a huge part of GPP’s, especially in MLB! I can absolutely relate! Just hang in there and trust your research. Baseball is so volatile.
    Tips for batter selection
    1. Ownership is most important so always try to get players at or below 15% and even lower in large field GPP’s,
    2. Make sure to make correlating plays if possible but this is much more important on Fanduel
    3. Take players who are k prone against low k pitching, for example Miguel Sano against any pitcher with a k rate below 8 per 9 innings
Craziest Experience in 5 words is tough.. I’ll think about it an tweet it to you if you send me your twitter

I narrow my player pool based on prefernces. I use a lot of tools but JM, CheeseisGood, Stevie and Seige get me started most days. The morning grind while reading articles from those and other RG members is how I start my DFS day. I then do my own research on pitching. I use optimizers about once a week.

I find that I think Contrarian by nature so i don’t think about hitters in baseball almost ever who will be high owned on a large slate. It is easy to find pivots in baseball all the time that allow you to be contrarian and on a given day anyone at any price can be Mike Trout. I don’t think any contrarian plays are wrong in large GPP’s.. Except for pitching! I don’t think you should be contrarian on pitching near as much! Unless one player you think will get hit that will be highly owned.
