    DraftDay BLB Finalist

So it’s once again time for the annual what are sites doing with their NHL product this year thread. FD has talked about either removing or at worst reducing the value of +/- along with the removal of positive points for penalties. As of right now they appear to be the same as last year. On DK they made a roster change in MLB that limited people to a max of 5 batters in a lineup. Is that going into effect in NHL as well? (no more than 5 skaters per team)

Haha he might be worth it. He’s basically always gonna have one of Sid/Geno/Phil on the ice with him. He blocks a decent amount of shots and logs a lot of ice time. Whatever Burns’ price is what Letang should be at.

Please show me any reputable analysis that demonstrates blocked shots are predictable.

I predict that Karlsson will have more blocked shots than Crosby this season. That’s reputable.

Where do I go to find out starting goalies for pre-season hockey?

  • SpoWeezy

this scoring overhaul is terrible and unnecessary. But it’s what you get when you mix whiners/complainers with fanduels inferiority complex to DK.

Spoiler alert: you’re never going to drive NHL traffic to the level of other sports.

Only hockey fans watch hockey. So coincidently, only hockey fans play NHL DFS. That’s the way it is.

They claim this will drive bigger prize pools.

Do you really expect nba and NFL fans to abandon their respective sports and start multi-entering NHL now?

Fanduels best bet was to cater to the already existing core of NHL DFS players. Somebody mentioned making sure Jamie benn is listed as a forward and not a 3k Dman. That would be a good start.

Paying a little bit of attention to the schedule and some minor tweaks is really all it would of taken to make FD’s product perfect. Instead they might have completely ruined it.

We lose +\- and instead we get… Blocked shots? 12 points for a goal? But the PPP bonus is only .5? Seems legit.

To me, it seems like this was a Hail Mary attempt to try to grab some of the DK NHL volume. But they won’t, because those who already play on DK like it there.

Fanduel – you were the closest DFS site to having it right in a niche sport. And judging from the responses ITT, nobody is really thrilled about these changes. Maybe next time consult with someone who actually watches hockey before trying to draft kingify your product.

Uh oh… Are we going to revert back to the “you don’t need to watch the games to be successful in DFS” discussion?

What makes you think that? I read @SpoWeezy comments to mean the opposite. That they should have taken more stock in what their core NHL users wanted than trying to pull in more of the MME crowd.

Or maybe you weren’t referring to his comment?

I think his analysis was pretty right on. Complaints were more about paying attention to the schedule and an accurate player pool, not that we wanted the entire product to be overhauled. The more and more I look at this, the more I think these changes were a major mistake.

Of course, opening week is going to look like all is dandy…but once we get a taste of this new system I predict more core NHL players will be moving their action away from FD.

I mean, has there been a single post about anyone saying they love these changes? I am aware that negative feedback is more likely to be posted, but is there anyone that prefers this system to the old when you take all the changes into account and not just the removal of PIM?

I like how saahilsud was registered into the FD NHL contests the nano-second they went live for the first time this year. But yeah, nothing to see here….

Did he play NHL last year? I certainly don’t remember him playing hockey

  • garybmw

No Saahil never played NHL…. until now I guess

  • garybmw

And hes playing the $5 single entry NHL contests, god bless him

I’ve never watched a hockey game in my life before last season but I still played fantasy hockey. I got the center ice package last season but I don’t plan on buying it this season even though I will be playing fantasy hockey. So I although I really like playing fantasy hockey I’m still not a big fan of actually watching it.
For me it came down to I was making money and it was as close to baseball as you can get as far as DFS goes.

At the end of the day, FD is a business. Their goal is to do whatever they can to create more revenue. Clearly they believe that these scoring changes will help increase prizepools, which is good for any serious NHL DFS player.

Their scoring is basically that of Draftkings now.

I’m not upset. I expected this. You just have to adjust.

Re: watching the games comment, SpoWeezy said “Only hockey fans watch hockey. So coincidently, only hockey fans play NHL DFS” —- I don’t think this is true or necessary to be successful at NHL DFS. I’d bet Saahil, who is jumping into the fray, doesn’t watch the games…

I am a hockey fan and a long-time season long fantasy hockey player, but this will be my first season delving into hockey DFS. In starting my prep for the season I get the impression that unlike baseball (which I’ve done well in), building a good hockey lineup is more about getting a feel for each team on the slate rather than individual players and advanced statistics. I’m a hockey fan, but a baseball nut with a firm grasp of advanced metrics in the sport. I feel like that will be far less important in hockey as opposed to following line changes closely and getting a feel for guys in good spots (ex: a player moves up to first line or first PP on 2nd day of b2b against backup goalie).

I may be off-base and oversimplifying, but I am looking forward to trying to hone a solid a strategy that works for me. I plan on only playing cash.

Anyone have any writeups on this preseason slate?
