Any Strategies for showdown contest on Draftking? How can you win in these contest? Best player always on 1.5 x spot?

  • JH822547

Well it depends on how many players are in your tournament old chap.

If you are aiming to win a very big tournament with lots of players you might want to try having a DEF or even a K as captain.

If it in a smaller tournament and there is one outstanding player you believe is certain to have a big game you should probably put him in the captain spot.

This advice doesn’t make any sense since I don’t believe that strategy has ever won a big field showdown GPP and never has been the perfect lineup. The winning lineups almost always have one of the highest scoring players as the captain which is usually an WR, RB or QB.

Absolutely a DEF as captain has won a big GPP this year and I was less than one point away from winning with one myself. You’re really looking for the DEF to put up 20+ points and then have no other player ‘go off’‘ and then the salary relief allows you pick 5 players who all score around 15-20 points.

Yes the highest projected scoring player is more likely to be the winning captain but people have ended up splitting the prize 400 ways and winning about 500 bucks each.

I think we’re still waiting for a winning kicker captain tbf and in some games you should rule it out as unfeasible.

The only way a kicker could ever win as a captain is if you expect like a 12-9 game with no sacks. Sure there is a 1 in 10 million shot at the perfect game script happening but that kind of strategy is pretty poor. I would much rather split 2-3 GPp’s a season for $1000 to $4000 each time then get wrecked all year trying to hit the impossible game scrip just so I can win it alone.

If you play a kicker as captain this weekend your best hope is you min cash but more likely your better off flushing your money down the toilet for entertainment to watch it spin.

Boswell kicked 6 FG’s in a Pitt 18-16 win over KC in the 2017 play-offs, so it’s happened in the last 20 play off games.

The important point is that if you’re going to play a big GPP you should be prepared to get weird.

If you are worried about losing your 10 bucks and just want to take the safest plays then play a cash game or small field GPP.

You should go into it with mentality of trying to win the big prize rather than looking to cash.

We can agree to disagree. I just feel like there is a point where your “getting weird” becomes just plain stupid and flushing money down the toliet. I am sure you could go back 2-3 years and find 1 game where a backup QB came in and lit it up but chasing that isn’t very smart.

In my opinion and it has been proven all sesosn that you can hit big cashes in showdown by differentiating yourself with your other 5 spots and not getting cute st the captain spot. There has been several huge wins with obvious captains so chasing the 0.01% just isn’t a smart strategy unless you have a massive bankroll and fine with losing 99% of the time an hope to god that 1% it kinda hits you don’t just return 5-10X.

Last night was a good example of why it is really dumb to play a kicker as a captain in the showdown modes. I nailed Damian Williams as my captain along with Mahomes, Rex Burkhead and Sammy Watkins who were all in the perfect lineup. However even with 4/6 perfect getting the last two spots wrong I didn’t win. The kickers were both 1-4% owned as Captain so even if the 1 in 1000 game happens and you hit that you still need to nail the last 5 spots to not just win 10X or less. So you could spend the next 5 years chasing a 1% outcome only to finally hit it and make $25.

Whereas with the more obvious plays like Damien Williams who was still only 8.76% owned as Captain will hit way more often than a kicker which gives you more chances to hit the perfect lineup and win a big payday. The perfect lineup last night split $5,500 in game 1 and $3,129.42 in game 2 which I would take for $3 any day.

Yup, nail the Captain spot but also realize it’s still a very tough contest to win or do well in. You pretty much need to hit all the rest of the spots. Even then the chances of massive long jams of the same scores everywhere is likely.

I always figure anything short of the perfect lineup isn’t winning anymore than 10X. Which is true 95% of the time except for the occasions with a lot of randomness so the perfect lineup falls below $48,000 in salary since very few lineups leave that much on the table. In which case if you really wanted to try and win a GPP by yourself your way better off to pretend the cap is $48,000 than waste your time with a kicker as captain.

Kevin Cole’s premium articles about roster construction for showdown slates for MLB and NFL have been among the most profitable things I have ever read on RG. If you have or are planning to try premium, I can’t recommend his articles more highly.
