Prices are up. Another guaranteed three rounds this weekend.

  • TommyWantWingy33

Si Woo very affordable again….. aside from him not liking many of the value guys. I just skimmed through the pricing quick so may have missed some diamonds in the rough. Yet another week of fantasy golf living in cold weather wishing I could be out golfing.

At first glance i dont really like much under 7k that i like at all. Kind of sucks. This one will be hard to create teams i like. Gonna be nearly impossible to take two guys over 10k and make it work.

Big field, small cut, three different courses and celebs. Perfect week to lighten up the entries.

  • ninerzfan8

Cut is only 60 and ties so not a lot of 6/6 through to Sunday likely

Would love to just hammer snedeker and dj into every lineup and hope to pair them with the right scrubs. Might require taking some fliers though. Let’s go duval

Might be a good choice if his boss at uber lets him off for the weekend. :)

Looking at past champions in this event confirms my thought that the guys who are known as good putters do not typically win this event – since 2001, I would count only Snedeker (winner in 2013 and 2015) as someone who is known as a good putter. His wins could be more about his early season success on the West Coast than his ability to putt; other past winners including Jimmy Walker and DJ fall into that statement as well and maybe even Phil and then have covered off 8 of the past 11 winners.

I’m thinking historical success in West Coast events plays pretty heavily into this event as it’s tougher to get hot early in the tournament when you are playing 3 diff courses which while similar in topography have unique design differences so again comfort and familiarity with Pacific coast courses and Bay Area micro climate influences all help.

Getting back to the putting comment I made, if any of you are serious golfers who understand the nuances and have putted on Poa greens like Pebble’s you know that they are much smoother earlier in the day versus later in the day as the grass grows at a very uneven rate during the day and some blades begin to flower/seed – watch Golf Channel’s replay on Tuesday’s of last years final round – when they zoom in on putts on the back nine of the lead groups, you will see the ball bounce/hop much more than a event like this week’s event in Scottsdale. Also you have 3 days of amateurs chewing up the greens with poorly hit skid mark type ball marks that are probably not being fixed as well as the pros do – think of your golf course’s condition after hosting a 3-day event – yes the greens are cut fresh every day but will show the wear for a few days before recovering fully.

I’m not expecting player-outcry like the US Open at Chambers Bay last year as the players know what to expect from Pebble’s and the other courses greens but just don’t expect a ton of long putts to go in – especially later in the day.

Ball striking and greens in regulation will certainly be important as there are some tough tee shots on each course and also some small well bunkered greens – short game / scrambling is also important this week as it is every week because not many players will not hit 16+ Greens in Reg on any day.

Geez, this has turned into more of a blog than quick post – sorry guys…

I haven’t done my player analysis and rankings yet but I can scratch about 40 guys off immediately based on my course conditions and playability theories.

One final thought – as already mentioned by another RG’er only 60+ ties make cut out of 156 players BUT the cut occurs after Saturday once players have played all 3 courses. So 6/6 making the cut will be great to have but a good 5/6 can do as well or better as only one day post-cut. Good luck……

At first look McGirt and si woo kim look like great values

Agree on McGirt with solid top ten potential week in week out but selfishly, it would be nice if he competed for the win more often. He has alternated years missing cut in this event 2011-2015 with T31, cut, T16, cut and then T21 last year. Does he break the trend ?

So Woo has a small sample size but has performed well this year – I expect his ownership to be down as well this week after a poor weekend in Scottsdale. I’m undecided on him.

im hoping mike weir comes back strong…

matt jones also seems like a good play… but would like to know if anyone else is looking his way at all.

He wasn’t somebody who I would have thought initially as his final round scoring average has not been great this year nor did he play Pebble Beach very well last year (67-73) so only -4 for his rounds on that course (winning score was -22 last year) BUT he has been a cut making machine early in the season and in past years as well. In Jan-Feb events, I think he has only missed 1 cut in last 3 or 4 years and some of his best finishes have come this time of the year after a run of cuts made with average finishes….so he may be ready for a breakout week like last year (the last 2 yrs mirror each other pretty well).

I think that a few of the lower guys from last week got a little bit of a bump up from how they play. For the rest of them lets just draw names out of a hat.

On a scale from Gary Busey to Charle Manson how crazy is it to roster Mike Weir? Not many value plays under 7.4k that I like and he allows some juicy 3 stud lineups.

  • td7232

Not sure if anyone was looking at Watney but he WD today. Figured someone may be looking due to his finish in this tourney last year.

He did not break 70 in calendar year 2015 and you will likely need to be 3-5 under par thru 3 rounds to see Sunday – I can’t imagine a scenario where he makes cut – there are much better cheap options than Weir; like anyone else…..and I’m a Canadian saying that. Also, he has battled a ton of injuries so a WD is something that would also scare me with him – he doesn’t need to fight thru pain if something flared up as he is a multi millionaire and has many business ventures.

Not sure who is crazier on your Busey to Manson as both are looney in their own way but a Weir DFS play is off the charts in my opinion.

If you want some 6K or less guys with a better shot of making cut, look at fellow Cdn Nick Taylor, both Ken Duke and Brian Gay are veteran players back from long injury breaks and know these courses, then guys like Hubbard, Aldridge, Burgoon and Van Der Walt all have made almost 50% (some guys more) of cuts this year and even bottom salary guy Oppenheim has a few cuts made. I’m not gonna say who of these I have rostered so far but I have 2 of the guys I listed (in separate lineups).

  • cheezpizza

If you’re looking for legitimate value, Kyle Stanley or Jerry Kelly fit the bill.

  • t4t3r

The Weir play brings about an interesting strategy though. He could be the “sacrificial lamb” of your lineup which allows you to fit 3 studs into a 5/6 that has a higher likelihood of higher place finishes. You only need to correctly predict 2 lower-price guys to make the cut instead of trying to get 4 right.

  • MGoBlue06

I like the idea of having a sacrificial lamb but I think that you could choose any of the guys 5.5k and below and it would turn out better than Weir.

  • cowbell204

If anyone knows, why the huge disparity between cut line in 2014 & 2015? Cut last year was -6, in 2014 it was over par. Wind?

  • walkoff9

Are there certain stats you look to for guys that are “wind proof”?

Yeah its called being from Great Britain.
