I don’t know if there has been a post about this already but I absolutely hate this new feature. I know everyone is using video now but I find them incredibly annoying and I’m less likely to watch them when I see them constantly popping up and I have to keep closing the player.

I have been a premium member for a good few years now and by and large find RG to be a great site. But I would honestly consider going somewhere else for most of my DFS content if you guys are going to start use pop up, auto play videos.

Please RG we know you have a lot of video content, I watch plenty of them myself but I hate this new feature. You don’t need to shove video content in our face, you have a great big ‘video’ tab right at the top of the page.

It doesn’t add anything to my experience as a paid up member of this site and actively irritates me whenever they pop up especially when you are going back and forth between a page and everytime you go back the same video pops up. Example, if I’m on the grind down and going from game to game, every time I go back to the first game the same video pops up again. Honestly, who actually enjoys that?

    I agree. Super annoying.

    Ditto….

I have all the Chrome apps to automatically block HTML5, etc. autoplay videos and generally they work but I also tend to avoid all sites with video pop-ups and autoplay.

Funny, user surveys say one of the biggest complaints about websites is autoplay/pop-up videos; yet more and more sites seem to be adding this on.

Not only is it horribly annoying (come-on people, if I want to see a video I can simply click-on a hyperlink rather than having it forced on me) but it’s also a massive resource resource hog on the user-side browser and computer.

Good point re the resource hog, I didn’t even think of that when I wrote my post but you definitely get a noticeable lag when they pop up.

I’d love to hear the reason for implementing them from RG and if enough people complain will they consider removing them

Also interested to see if anyone comments saying they like them. If you like these new autoplay pop up videos please feel free to comment below!

    Honestly?…..

And I generally don’t complain, and this is off-topic, but since I’m in deep now, here I go…..

The other thing I hate is the addition of GIFs to the forums (yes, this is a year or two old….)

Prior to the GIF Craze” in the forums, it seems like the forum conversations were more worthwhile, interesting, etc….

Now we get forums with page after page of juvenile cat/dog/stupid meme/ etc…. GIFs…..

What’s particularly annoying (to me anyways) is when someone posts a GIF, and then someone else replies with another GIF, and there’s a third…..

And 10 forum thread pages later finally there’s some interesting dialogue !!!!

    Okay, done complaining….

Blame the OP sgaffney for me getting me started…. LOL. :)

  • rgriffin37

I also can’t stand them and have a hard time imagining anyone finding them to be of any value. They’re bad enough on desktop but a total non-starter for mobile, especially if you’re using cellular data and don’t want to needlessly burn your data with an auto-play video you never asked for.

Hopefully this will be taken as constructive criticism like GJE said but I agree with his thoughts. I was discussing with a MOD yesterday how bad the forums have gotten. If you read them during the day it’s a handful of posters bickering back and forth. If you don’t agree with someone’s thoughts then move on vs badgering them which entices the discussion to go on calling each other names. It’s one thing to have a discussion between posters who disagree but now all you see is them constantly degrading each other. If you read them at night once the games have started it’s posters posting gifs about how bad there teams are or how DFS stinks in general due to the rake, chalk hitting, etc…

When I started with RG, before GIF’s, you could find useful info that made you think especially if your mindset wasn’t in that thought process. Now you seldom find posters posting thoughts, probably because they don’t feel confident with there process and don’t want someone to reply with a that’s stupid thought which you see way to often. It is no surprise that the threads continue to get smaller and smaller each day/week. I know of several posters who have left or post minimal due to posters who ruin the threads.

Off topic but along the same line, I watched today’s nba show with Crain, Dean and Grant as I had extra time and had not watched a show this year for nba. Yes it was just one show but it was a joke. 75% off topic and 25% actual nba slate talk. Sure it was a five game slate but instead of wasting the hosts time along with the viewers how about making it 25 minutes while staying on topic. Grant was the main reason I decided to watch as I feel he has one of the best GPP mindsets when it comes to nba. I felt the majority of the time he felt uncomfortable as he wasn’t able to discuss what he was there for, nba.

Hopefully the powers to be take this in stride as I mentioned in my first sentence and can get the reigns pulled back.

    Amen brother….

…. Insert dumbass GIF of cat/dog/baby/busty blonde-girl running into a pole while texting/fat-guy farting in a crowded room all while seemingly praying here to make my “Amen” comment make sense….

    I know I said I would quit complaining…..

But I also agree with your comment regarding the video-casts….

Too little info, too much “strained attempts” at humor/entertainment.

Thus, like you, I don’t watch any of the video-casts here anymore.

    Hey guys,

I passed on your concerns about the video. As far as the gifs, while I personally am not a fan, many members asked for them and use them very frequently. I am afraid we are outnumbered on that concern.

  • eperson911

I hate auto-play videos in general, but the reason is I am really concerned is that they can kill my data use on mobile. when you open the RG home page the video autoplays below what you can initially see without scrolling down. If you’re sound is off, you are burning through data without realizing it.

Agreed. These are very annoying especially the part about the grind down.

Keep the comments coming in, the only way they’ll do anything about it is if enough people complain

This is where I could add an ‘amusing’ GIF to signify some sort of rebellion or revolution but probably best to give that a miss on this thread

  • kujo33

I agree. Don’t like the autoplay.

Sorry, not hijack this forum thread on an unrelated topic (and also not trying to be disagreeable), but are you sure it’s true that more people like gifs than do not?

If I recall, out-of-the-blue, gifs were just introduced one day, as I certainly don’t recall responding to a survey of all members on this topic.

Again, my feeling is that for the most part gifs dumb-down the forums and are used excessively; meaning frequently the gifs inserted in forum posts seemingly have nothing to do with the accompanying comments in forum posts, and even when they do, they really don’t add anything at all to the overall conversation/dialogue….

Don’t need Highlight pop up videos at the start of “first look” …..takes too long to load and then I have to X out of it before I can scroll down to read the actual article.

I find these incredibly annoying to the point I don’t want use this site anymore. You can’t even block these videos. The only thing I did find is I can block the element but it doesn’t solve the issue completely. News Flash RG, If I want to watch a video I’ll click on it. Stop spamming my data with a video I don’t want to watch.

def prefer no pop-up auto-play videos, for same reasons as already expressed above

  • Cobra_Kai

I am not sure anyone actually prefers auto-play videos. My theory for why it is becoming more common is for an artificial increase in play counts which then helps ad revenue. Opinions?

Also, RG please stop them. Thanks!

  • yisman

on Chrome, you should be able to set it to “ask” for Flash, meaning you’d have to give a page permission first. Address bar, just to the left of where the link to the page is.

Many sites do the autoplay and it’s obnoxious, quite frankly.

More and more sites are going to HTML5 instead of Flash. Also, while users have limited options to block videos, on the other end, site’s have the ability to block a user’s ability to block videos; meaning if you try to block autoplay video, the site won’t allow you to view any other content on that specific page.

While I don’t know what RG uses for autoplay video (HTML5, Flash, other), if they haven’t already, I’m certain they could find a way to prohibit users from blocking autoplay videos if they so desired.

  • ElSlappo

I dislike both autoplay video and gifs in the forums. I know of no one in the history of the internet who likes autoplay video don’t understand why it even exists
