    Crystal ball time

I don’t pick teams ….Team Pepsi – Team Coke ….Team Democrat – Team Republican …..Team FanDuel – Team DraftKings ….but I can’t imagine FanDuel retains their current position in the market 5 years from now. With all the new stuff coming aboard (Yahoo, ESPN, etc) in the near future, the site’s limitations will become more and more of a problem. And I know, I know ….“changes don’t happen over night”, and “I don’t think people understand what it takes to recode things” …but you can’t keep making excuses over large periods of time as to why your site and it’s technology is light years behind. FD is the ‘big dog’ in the market and you can’t even use their site to monitor live game activity? Well, I guess you can, but you can punch yourself in the face too, doesn’t make it a good idea. Takes 30 times longer to enter contests, no ‘in-the-lineup’ indicator in the player pool, no opponent SP information displayed, etc. Now, I’m an idiot, and FD could literally be rolling out monstrous upgrades tomorrow and I would have no idea. But if not, you can’t just keep stankin up the joint with a poor product and hope to retain status. The player volume and ‘brand value’ alone won’t be able to keep the ship afloat long-term.

As long as demand remains inelastic it’s gonna take a long time for that house of cards to crumble. I have been very critical of FD, not to bitch, but because they are my platform of choice and I really think they have been slipping. Here’s the thing…I keep playing there. Yes, I have drawn back on my action, but I don’t see DK as being “light years” ahead in any particular category. That said, I do see DK as having a more stable and reliable contest structures. Thus I have pushed some of my action to them and away from FD.

My hope is that FD makes up their mind and reinstates a stable contest structure again before I (others) get too comfortable playing on their competitor sites and leave them for good. It is a dangerous game in an ever growing industry (where new competitors big and small are popping up monthly) to understand and acknowledge that there is a groundswell of frustration about your product, only to continue doing the things that make those frustrations essentially worse.

How long is the rope? Weeks, Months, Years? I am sure FD is closely monitoring this and will react accordingly. Unfortunately for many FD loyalists they are taking their good ole time and in response we jump ship…kinda.
