I just received a text stating that Tuesday is make or break for a law to be passed in Texas regarding Fantasy Sports.

    Quote from Text:

So far, it hasn’t been enough. Tuesday is make or break for TX fantasy sports! Ask your lawmaker to support
    HB-1457. Call 512-640-2300, you’ll be patched thru.

It doesn’t sound good in TX. My suggestion would be for anyone living in Texas to call this number.

If TX gets banned from Fantasy Sports it will be a big blow to the industry.

The bill going to floor vote next week, passed by a 6-1 margin in the House committee vote. If it passes, expect FanDuel to be back by the end of the month and there will be no risk of losing DFS after the eventual FD/DK merger. If no decision is made, we are safe for 2 more years as long as they don’t pull out after a merger. If it fails, well I can always move to Arkansas.

And it doesn’t hurt that Tony Romo is pimping out DFS for Mr. Jones. He may be the butt of a lot of jokes from the haters, but he’s still loved here.

I just called the number provided and voiced my support for HB 1457. They asked for my POC indormation to include address, telephone number, and full name. The person I spoke with was very professional but I couldn’t sense one way or another if this bill will indeed pass the house floor. Is there any reason to doubt that the bill won’t pass next TUES? The text I received indicated that it won’t pass with the phrase “so far it hasn’t been enough”. Why did we Texans receive this text if the bill passed on the House floor 6-1. Is there a big push in the Senate to go against the house? Having to grind out the wait until Tuesday is going to be awful. Can anyone shed a little more light on this? Any additional thoughts. Thanks for starting this thread and keeping us posted. I knew a decision was coming down soon but not the exact date.

I just called as well. My Representative is Drew Darby and I asked the person answering in his office if there had been very many calls supporting this bill and she said less than 10. Pretty dismal news for me. Now I am depressed. But, maybe the larger cities in Texas and their Reps have had more response.

    EadesScience:

Thanks for the update. I did some additional research online. Some religious leaders recently spoke out vehemently during meetings at the state capitol during sessions regarding the proposal of the bill. They claimed that DFS is a form of gambling and that it destroys young people. As a retired combat infantryman with 26 years of service in the Army and four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, six if you count Saudi Arabia/Yemen border and Kosovo/Serbia border, I can tell you what really destroys young people. It sure ain’t DFS. My gut instinct is that this bill will NOT pass final approval for legislation and become law. I hope I am wrong. Texas loves its cowboys but it also loves its God. Romo versus God :). My “strategic tournament entry” is on God. Notice I didn’t use the term “bet” lol. Anyway, thanks for starting this thread and thanks for the replies. Please keep them coming. I spent a long time navigating the DFS waters since my recent retirement from the military and I recently turned pro. I have had a successful run at this game of skill. I have also had interesting conversations with fellow players and an all in all wonderful time interacting with you guys from the DFS community to include using Rotogrinders as a platform for these discussions. Thank God for Rotogrinders! No pun intended :). After experiencing Hell in places like Ramadi Iraq and Kabul, Afghanistan, I really found something I could enjoy immensely in DFS and now a preacher from Texas and AG Ken Paxton want to take this enjoyment away. Crazy world we live in. Thanks again you guys for the updates. Please keep them coming.

Not getting into the religious aspect of this even though I think it’s complete hypocrisy by a religious sect that is always preaching against hypocrisy. However, I not only live a few miles from Louisiana and grew up in Louisiana, but I also worked in the casino business for a long time. The casinos in the Shreveport/Bossier area of Louisiana are still there because of massive play from DFW players. The casinos in Lake Charles and New Orleans are still in business because of Houston money. The casinos in Oklahoma thrive because of Texas players and no one else.

I believe it was 2011 when Texas had it’s first ever deficit and there was constant chatter about video poker and other forms of electronic gambling being legalized in Texas since every surrounding state had already legalized it. The fact that video poker still hasn’t been approved is what makes me think that DFS may not have a chance either. Too many Bible thumpers that think the 2 are identical. Pisses me off that religious hypocrites in this state think they know what’s right for the moral majority and that adults aren’t capable of making their own decisions. I own a bowling center that hadn’t had a liquor license in abut 15 years when I bought it. Got my liquor license a little over 3 years ago and that same religious sect that thinks you’re going to hell for buying a lottery ticket publicly protested our business.

I’m going off on a rant but mind your own fucking business. If you don’t like gambling, don’t do it. If you think drinking a beer is a sin, don’t do it. If you think Jesus hates fantasy sports, don’t play it. You think your kids can’t make good decisions involving any of those 3, well work on your own parenting skills and leave me the hell alone.

Well said! I could not agree with you more. I don’t interefere with religious sects right to worship so they shouldn’t interfere with my rights to do what I want to do. They should mind their own business. Freedom of Religion/Freedom to Play DFS. Thanks for the history lesson too regarding Texas gambling outcomes. Interesting stuff. Congrats on winning the bowling center and getting your liquor license even thought it took you so long to get the license. Your response to this thread is exactly what I was referring to when alluding to the benefit I get out of being a part of the DFS community. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Yes Sir, You are correct rsrunningrebels. The only hopeful in my eyes is that DK and FD, but especially DK since they are still allowing play in Texas will have their lobbyists working overtime to get this bill to pass. If the bill does not pass then that is around a 5% loss of Texas DFS players which is a huge blow I would think. The loss of Texas could start a knee jerk reaction from the pay masters that handle Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, etc on handling transactions. This is the last thing they wish to happen so for this reason I think that they will be lobbying extremely hard before the vote is taken. Paxton does not really give a care about whether the bill passes or not in my opinion. He only announced it was illegal to cover his bases and ensure financial support from the church groups with fat wallets. Again, these are just my thoughts with no facts to base my opinion on.

I just called my representatives office, and the guy that answered the phone sounded like he wasn’t even interested. He didn’t even ask for my name until I asked if he wanted my name. Hell, everyone on rotogrinders could call and give them the zip 76065 if he isn’t going to ask for any identification.

I called and then spread the word. We’ve been a year now with no Fanduel (and other sites) and I would love to get this vote passed and get our DFS back to normal around here.
    Keep workin those phones fellas!

    Texasrangersfan,

That is unfortunate. Just wanted to reassure you though that this is not the case in my district. Not only did my representative office take down all my information, but, after reading EadesScience’s post, I called back and got some promising news. Not ONE person in my district of greater Killeen, Harker Heights, Temple called in to speak out against the bill. The representative even mentioned to me that she thought it was a shame that legalizing DFS was an issue as she has two brothers that are also avid DFS players. Finally, thanks EadesScience for your take on Paxton. Makes sense. This guy probably had to placate his religious base for political survival and probably couldn’t care less about DFS. He’s probably not a candidate for weasel material like that AG in New York. That guy, I think his name is Schneiderman, is the total epitome of political power seeker. I saw a special on him and his stance against DFS. Funny how he supports Indian casinos though and OTBs for horse racing. Wonder who is fattening that guys pockets? Funny how these politicians call it a game of luck too. DFS is obviously and undoubtedly a game of skill. Of course there is a little luck involved just like there is in other games of skill. Anyway, I’m starting to ramble so I’ll cut this short. But before I go, I want to thank all of you for weighing in on this topic and I hope we all wake up one day next week to see some optimistic news come out way. I’m 50/50 right now on whether or not the bill passes in out favor. I contacted DK to see if I could gain some insight from them but to no avail. Received the standard generic response like I anticipated I would and don’t blame them for not revealing more until the time is appropriate. But gut instinct tells me that they already know which way the Texas bill will sway next week. My guess is that it may stay in limbo for two more years and DK/FanDuel merge will show it’s hand on whether they will pursue an ongoing DK antagonism against AG opinion or follow a FanDuel withtreat and terminate business entirely with Texas based residents. Sorry again to ramble. You guys have a great day!

    headchopper,

Big fan man. Love your contributions on podcasts. Thanks in part to a lot of insight I get from you, I have been rising up the Grinders Rankings real fast and posting a huge profit since turning pro. I’m even thinking of pursuing blog writing. Not only did I keep working the phones in Texas today, I also called the office of the preacher who spoke out at the House meeting the other day against DFS legalization and regulation and asked him to call me back for a professional debate and friendly conversation so he can hear my perspective and how DFS has helped me in my life. I’m usually knee deep in lineup building right now but have taken up all of my day getting involved in supporting this very important matter. Take care and thanks for supporting the rank and file of your Rotogrinders base! Wife is getting off work soon and we are heading out to a dinnner party to down some coronas and good TexMex food. Otherwise, I’d be tuned in to Grinders Live :)

The Texas State Lottery isn’t gambling? I can’t stand laws that are inconsistent when it comes to moral issues.

    Good point txdave41!

Schneiderman got DFS banned here in NY until the Senate overturned the ban six months later.

Schneiderman is a crook who takes six figures on an annual basis in kickbacks from casinos and racetracks, and of course he also thinks the lottery is great.

He has a twitter account so I’ve tweeted at him a whole bunch of times asking for an explanation about his absurd crusade and I’ve always been ignored.

He feels that DFS is gambling, but race tracks, casinos, and the lottery are not.

There is also an email that was sent from draftkings today that gave you a link to tweet your representatives as well. I would suggest you all do that as well as calling and sending emails.

Keep up the calls fellas, my rep is Dawnna Dukes and her head of staff said she always votes with Rep Raymond’s bills.

Even if you’re not from Texas, call google a random address in Texas and use that one to find your rep and contact them – it will take you twenty seconds and it would really appreciated by all of us down here in this sweat.

  • texasrangersfan

It sounds like this bill may not come up for a vote? I just don’t understand this.
