I just received a text stating that Tuesday is make or break for a law to be passed in Texas regarding Fantasy Sports.

    Quote from Text:

So far, it hasn’t been enough. Tuesday is make or break for TX fantasy sports! Ask your lawmaker to support
    HB-1457. Call 512-640-2300, you’ll be patched thru.

It doesn’t sound good in TX. My suggestion would be for anyone living in Texas to call this number.

If TX gets banned from Fantasy Sports it will be a big blow to the industry.

Remember the pastor I told you all about who publically voiced his opposition to HB-1457, the one I called personally to challenge him to a debate? He called me back. He was actually a pretty nice guy and didn’t push religion on me whatsoever. I respect a guy like that. Regardless of what side of the fence you are on, if you have the courage and conviction to stand up for what you believe in, then you are doing your part in the fight. Keep doing what you can to keep DFS alive in Texas! You guys are doing the heavy lifting right now. Regardless of the outcome, when the legal status of DFS in Texas is decided, you can look back and know you did all you could in this fight. Don’t stand on the sidelines. Keep up the good work!

Some pastors say they are against gambling, but have stuff like bingo and raffles. That is gambling, even though the church benefits from the proceeds. At my church, they have a bazaar every fall with bingo and a raffle. Also my state senator – who is probably against DFS oversaw the raffle drawing. How ironic.

I called my rep in a last ditch effort to push the bill and they referred me to the Calendar Committee, specifically Paige Higerd who is the clerk. I tried to reach out but did not get an answer.

I have nothing to go off, but my sense is that this is far from over. May overly optimistic, but I think we might underestimate how much of a money machine this thing is. For one, Jerry Jones invested in this. I don’t think they’d want poop on his operations in any way shape or form. Second, I got the sense that the DK/FD merger was going to take a while and maybe this had something to do with it. I think their emphasis for us to push for this would’ve sped things up. I highly doubt DK would walk from TX. I’m by no means a legal expert, but It just wouldn’t make any logical sense. So to me, there’s still time to enjoy but I think now we have a better idea on the processes and where complacency gets us. I for one am guilty of not picking up the phone enough. I sent emails periodically, but it was really only when I got on the phone that I got some sort of response or action. I think we need to form a group of some sort and tie up their phone lines one day a week for a few hours every week so we stay fresh on their minds.

We’re going to have to start holding feet to the fire to invoke and kind of response out of these people.

“I think their emphasis for us to push for this would’ve sped things up. “

    Who is their? DK? Fantasysportsforall?

You think we could’ve gotten action on the bill with more pressure? I think they got plenty of calls about it in the last week or two.

    Yep DK & FD.

I week or two does not feel adequate to me. I think we needed months. But that’s just my gut.

Did you guys receive an email from FanDuel stating that Texas legislators failed us by not getting HB-1457 schedule for review? I just sent more emails out via the FanDuel link asking, one last time, to see if they will consider convening overtime to address HB-1457. The email I sent to my state legislators was professional yet, at the same time, very personal. I explained to them that during my numerous combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I worked overtime, sometimes up to 72 hours straight with no sleep. They should consider extending their session until all bills are addressed, to include the ones not on calendar as of yet like HB-1457, even though the calendar committee had received hundreds of requests to place it there. A little overtime and extension to their biannual session wouldn’t inconvenience them too much if they really care about Texas residents. Is there anything else we can do to get this bill voted on? Any ideas? Or should we just hold fast and hope DK continues to let us play until the next voting session in two more years? I respect your guys opions so any recommendations you all might have right now would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is just my thought, and maybe it’s my legal background always worrying about what could go wrong, but I’m not comfortable relying on DK and other sites to just continue to operate in Texas for 2 more years with no legal clarity. I plan to keep on letting these guys know that there will be repercussions in upcoming elections. It obviously doesn’t look good for getting this bill to the floor right now. However, if we keep on letting all these legislators/politicians know of our unhappiness and our plan to follow through by voting for their opponents then that could give the sites more leverage if they have to try to cut a deal with the Attorney General down the road because he knows it looks bad politically, or maybe even get a special session (not sure entirely how a special sessions works -anyone know more about the special session rules?). I’ve been told that the Texas Fantasy Sports Alliance is still the best route to take as those guys can then send those messages to whoever they are dealing with – be it legislators, Attorney General, etc. Basically keep on firing messages through the Texas Fantasy Sports Alliance website (https://txfantasysportsalliance.com) and by contacting your legislators so they get the message that we’re just not going to quiet down.

I live in Texas & called several of the Rep’s. How is DFS any different than the stock market? You have the market itself & then you have your agents (DFS/FD=agents). When stock is purchased you give your agent a % (when you enter a contest you give DK/FD %). The stock= players and how they do is consistent with if you make or lose $ (just as you would via the stock market). For the government to try and take away DFS is to say that we are unable to manage our own money and unfit to decide where & when we spend our hard-earned dollar. I pay taxes, just like all of you and I think they take plenty of my money; why do they get to tell me how I can spend what left I’ve earned? ..Hops off soap box to smoke a cig. :)

I agree with you about the stock market vs DFS. However, a person could lose lost more money faster on the stock market especially using stuff like uncovered options. It could be in the tens of thousands. In effect you are betting on the performance of the company (made up of people), the market and unexpected stuff like terrorist attacks, etc. The brokers take your money to participate much like FD and DK take rake. Maybe they should ban TDAmeritrade and ETrade.
As for the message saying we would vote against them next election, the districts are made such that if you win the primary, you win in November. Also,Texas is run by the Tea Party and the Religious Right. Until that changes, not much will happen. I read in the news today that they have so many bills backlogged in the House that some important bills can’t be voted on before the end of the session. There was talk of a special session. however, they are only for big stuff like school finance, etc. It seems that meeting for 3 1/2 for 4 months every other year, a lot of stuff just doesn’t get done. They seem to waste time passing bills into law that get struck down by the federal courts later.

Was relayed to me that need to keep expectations in check, but that we aren’t dead in Texas yet and there is still a play on the table. Need to keep on HAMMERING the Texas Fantasy Sports Alliance website with those emails and keep on pestering Rep Hunter, local legislators etc. Basically, we’ve still got a chip and chair so let’s keep on battling.

Also have been told that Dan Patrick is our new target. You can email him through his website (http://danpatrick.org/) and also tweet him at @danpatrick. Let him hear from the RG Community and politely ask him to bring the bill up for a vote. Have been told this is important and there is still a shot.

What A25Smith said is correct! Please politely reach out to DanPatrick directly on twitter or via his site, and visit the link in the header of RotoGrinders, if you live in Texas. It helps.

Wait so you can literally walk around with a loaded gun in Texas legally – yet, might not be able to throw together a $5 NBA gpp team with YOUR OWN money in the same said state? You have got to be kidding me. What a time to be alive.

This is in no way a gun control take – quite the opposite. There is no reason the government should be preventing harmless activity in what I thought was a free country. Starting to think we live in a country that we honestly can’t even say that anymore…

He’s a moron that spent the entire NBA season telling people who they should play that night and then complaining the next day about why he lost and why his bankroll was gone.

Keep up the good work guys. I have sent numerous emails, tweets, and calls. They have to know this is important to a lot of voters. I can’t help but think someone is purposely keeping this from coming to a vote.

FYI, the Senate Companion Bill to HB1457 is SB 1970. Contact Lt Governor Dan Patrick to get the companion bill pushed through.

Since the person who wanted to make legislation to legalize DFS in Texas was a democrat and got constituents from the opposition to support his proposed bill.

Sent my emails to Dan Patrick and my state senator this morning. I didn’t use the form email but one I wrote myself. Things are getting towards the end of the session. I hope we can get the senate bill passed.

Planning to do the same at lunch with another email and another round of tweets. Was told that practically speaking we need Dan Patrick to move something by the end of this week so we need to hit him in the next few days with positive tweets encouraging him to get something done.
