Just got an e-mail about this. Also giving players multiple position eligibility.

  • tprokopenko

Amazing news! I might actually give DK some NBA action now that they have a playable product.

What exactly is the research? Luckily following the right beat writer and sitting on your computer or phone 5 minutes before tip off? Thats not research, thats just seeing the right information at the right time.

That’s what it’s about, information. There’s no unfair edge to those who monitor news leading up to tipoff. Punish me for not having an annoying wife/girlfriend who doesn’t want me in front of the computer

Everyone should really be thinking about DFS changes from the lenses of ‘How does this impact their most valuable customers?’. The most valuable customers are the ones who have fun while losing. Are you guys really surprised that late swap is an annoyance for casual losing players? Clearly a dfs forum is going to have huge selection bias for people who are willing to spend a ton of time on DFS.

  • FantasySultan

So the early, turbo, late, and later contests will now become the “main” contests.

All late west coast players will now be coined as “strictly gpp”.

  • thetitanlb

I dont get how anyone can say this makes it fairer for people who dont check updates. If anything this makes it more unfair every night because a random late scratch happens all the time. So now its just GAMBLING basically and takes out a ton of the skill.

I will still play on DK because I like the idea of some players having more than one position.

Yes. I’ve primarily been a FD guy so used to no late swap but the multiple position eligibility is awesome. I will try it out for sure.

  • terrypercs

could someone explain how this in any way shape or form is any type of postive for people who actually care enough to research and care to do well on nba dfs? Im completely missing the reasoning. To enjoy NBA? so then dont bet as much or anything at all. Im REALLY not understanding. I’m the furthest thing from a shark but im competitive as hell and do my thing in gpp’s … this sucks

  • Petergunz82

I would counter that with those who do the research deserve the edge.

Totally agree. Let’s reward people for being lazy and not having to do the work up till late game tips

  • savant111

Is it a programming nightmare to allow one late swap? This can limit the value hunting, but at least save players from taking a zero most nights.

  • thetitanlb

I dont care who you are. If your a casual player or a serious player. Once the scratch effects you enough you will just stop playing….

  • Mekong83

I enjoy watching NBA games whether or not I’m playing DraftKings, I use DraftKings to make money, so thanks for taking the enjoyment out of DraftKings

    I can’t breathe. I’m so disappointed that I can’t even tilt properly.

  • MHDU2424

This is horrible news….And the reasons are dumb

Getting a zero because of a late scratch out of nowhere is way more aggravating than having to check starting lineups for 2 minutes a few times a night

Play on FanDuel if you’re that lazy or don’t have the time that night

It wasn’t like DK was having issues filling big tournies with late swap so WTF

I’ll be playing more turbos and smaller slates because getting a zero out of nowhere will tilt me bad….much more than not checking lineups before tip where I can only blame myself

  • thetitanlb

Also now if you play the full slate there is literally no reason to play players from late games once you hit a certain part of the year. IT will be pointless and will just have negative effects everywhere.

To me a casual player more than anyone is playing to enjoy watching the games and sweating the action. Is it really that much work to keep an alert app on your phone to give you the news.

I could see the argument if you really needed to be on your computer constantly checking for news, but really it’s so easy to get the news it should not be that big of a deal.

If you havent realized, sites are trying to make the games fairer and have more people winning. This evens the playing field for the people who arent constantly checking their news feeds.

You’re missing the point. There is no unfair advantage. Everyone can check the news and react accordingly

We know that there will be customers that are not happy with this decision. However, we have increasingly received feedback from players who have decreased their play or even stopped playing completely because they want to “actually enjoy watching the NBA.” We do see the value of late-swap and there are no plans of removing it for other sports, but for NBA specifically, it has become clear that the amount of extra time and energy required to compete as a result of late-swap functionality is taking too much away from the enjoyment of the game.

I very much appreciate that DK took this unexpected step to improve the game for casual players. NBA without late swap is already skillful enough and doesn’t need to add the extra stress or edge from late swapping. Late scratches are annoying but roughly balance out over time.

For those who are upset, keep in mind that DK already allows experts more freedom to join games. Limiting their edge is an important step for keeping NBA viable.

Also, Y-ahoo is the most prominent site that still allows NBA late swap (for now), although they still have major issues with people scooping head to heads.

    Edit: I can’t say Yahoo?

  • circadudexl

    DK just dropped the hammer!

  • Rosterbate

So what websites would be good to pivot to for the NBA season? I liked the DK NBA product but will probably switch to another site after this news. Are there other sites that offer an NBA product similar to DK prior to these changes?

I get this concept of ‘earning’ or ‘deserving’ DFS outcomes is self fulfilling and validates people but please see reason. DFS is an entertainment product that has the side effect that some people have the potential to make money. This is the removal of an edge. But at the same time they add an edge in multiple position eligibility. Not sure how much equity that is but its at least something for all the EV hunters.

Meh, I don’t know how much skill it takes to check twitter for GTDs. Commitment, yes.

I think multiple player eligibility adds more skill to NBA DFS than late swap did.

I can understand everyone on here griping about this because this is precisely the population that benefits from late swap. But if it helps the industry grow I’m for it. I think we have to come to grips with the fact that the product has to continue to change for it to stay. And we frequently won’t like the changes.

    Hey Guys,

I wanted to share a little more on our reasoning for removing late-swap for NBA

I think late-swap was initially viewed by many new and casual customers as a necessary safe guard against a last-minute “scratch,” which has made late-swap a very popular feature for DraftKings over the past few years. While late-swap can help prevent the poor experience of getting a zero in your lineup, there are other uses for the feature which ultimately require users to monitor news and scramble to make last-minute adjustments to their lineups up until tip-off of the last game of the night. For example, often times a late scratch will result in other players becoming valuable picks. So now you are not only monitoring your own players to make sure they are not scratched; you actually should be monitoring all NBA news to capitalize on any new value picks that might transpire while players are still eligible to be swapped.

    -Mark

Yes, because seeing 0’s in your line-ups is so much fun.
