I was surprised to see that there was not a best ball thread for discussion. Assuming the mods have no issue with one being created, I may as well kick things off.

The biggest takeaway I have from my earliest DK BB drafts is that Jameis Winston is wildly under valued this year. In BB in particular I don’t see any legit argument for going QB early. There are a lot of reasonably safe bets for 4000 yards going at QB3 prices between Winston, Goff, and Roethlisberger. There are also plenty of guys with high week to week upside like Daniel Jones and Fitzmagic available late.

Are you guys really leaning into QB late as a strategy this year too?

I haven’t done any yet this year but that is a draft by draft question I think.

In general I think that’s a sound strategy. The next position I “worry” about is RB. I know take them early. But I need to make sure they aren’t in a timeshare if I’m taking them “early”. I got burned by taking Singletary too early (thinking he’d still get #1 reps). I guess I just didn’t believe Moss would “move up” so quick.

In my second BB league I opened with Kamara, Julio and Kittle because it just kind of broke that way.

Since most of the other starting RBs were snapped up I then proceeded to get both Jax, both TB and both Buff RBs over the next 8 or so rounds. Probably not ideal for regular fantasy but it seemed like a solid idea in BB.

Yeah I’ll remember committee this year for sure. Always need those handcuffs.

Trying to win some BB tickets before I start lol

Haha yep! I focused more on sit and go’s last year but I’m going to be spamming tournaments for the rest of the summer.

I’m also going to try totally different lineups and be very aggressive.

I’m willing to spend on Lamar in round 5 and if not, I fade QB until like round 10. Agree Jameis and (also) Cam Newton have been going way later than they should. I take a flyer on Taysom Hill when I draft Jameis just as a hedge. I’ve also been taking Justin Fields in like Round 13 instead of Jameis and then hedging Dalton with my last pick.

I notice I like my teams a lot better if I can get the #10-12 pick vs the #1-3 also.

I’m a huge fan of zero RB and anti-fragile RB early here since there is a lot of uncertainty in a few backfields. I’m loading up on premium QB/WR/WR and QB/WR/TE stacks early and then taking a host of pass catching backs that may end up being featured at some point. If I don’t land a top 4 RB (Cmac, Cook, Henry, Kamara) or Jonathan Taylor in the 1st round, I’m generally not taking a RB until I’ve taken a QB and 5-6 WRs on board.

As we get closer to the season I’ll probably zero in on RBs that I like but as of now I’d rather have some premium QB/WR stacks. I also have a lot of Michael Thomas, Trequan and Jameis as a #2 QB/WR/WR stack when it breaks that way but I’m not going with him as my #1 QB at all.

    You have massive balls. 🤣

The set needed for zero RB strategy is colossal. Meanwhile I’m vacuuming up RBs at every corner.

Well, I think I am just planning on doing a ton of entries. So, it’s not really “balls” its just I’ve set aside a certain percentage of my lineups for zero or anti-fragile RB and then just executing them. I also have a mix of QB/WR, QB/WR/WR, QB/TE, QB/WR/TE, QB/WR/WR/WR. i think stacking high octane offenses is a much better winning best ball strategy. you can make up for some 80 point weeks by spiking 220 a couple of times haha.

You can also only play a max of 3 RBs. And if you take one of the top 4 (or 5/6 if you include Taylor and Ekeler) then you are really just hedging against them by taking more RBs. You can play a max 4 of WRs. A lot of my teams look like this:

#1 spot: CMac, Justin Jefferson, Keenan Allen, Tyler Lockett, Jamarr Chase and then snag Wilson or Herbert on the next turn.
#10 spot: Ekeler, Hopkins, Amari Cooper/CeeDee, DJ Moore and then Kyler or Prescott on the next turn.

    Even at #12 I’m going Diggs/Hopkins.

So much more upside from high volume receivers with 10 catch + 100 yard upside (mostly playing BB on DK). They don’t even need to score that many TDs.

Not a mod but I don’t think there is any draw back to it in this case. Especially since you’re in no way actually setting your lineup with bestball.

    Mods?

Good point. I’ll probably have 50 of these teams eventually. I’m definitely going to try some different stuff.

I actually only have one roster that I drafted that I took two RBs early that I like.

    QBs
    Burrow
    Tua

    RBs
    Kamara
    CEH
    Hines
    Jamaal Williams
    Tarik Cohen

    WRs
    Justin Jefferson
    Chase/Higgins/Boyd (all 3)
    Juju
    Will Fuller
    Trequan Smith
    Van Jefferson
    Josh Reynolds
    D. Eskridge (SEA rookie)

    TE
    Gesicki
    Ebron
Jack Doyle (my favorite late round flier)

I have two double stacks with QBs with rushing upside (triple stacked this one, but don’t always do that). Kamara and CEH both catch a lot of passes. All my back up RBs have value in any game script but also catch a lot of passes. TE sucks but there is some correlation. I’m very high on Fuller, Trequan and Van Jefferson this year.

This is my best non zero/anti-fragile RB draft. I’ll post my favorite on of those so you can see what I am saying.

    EDIT this is on DK

  • thedkexperience

    Thanks @yisman.

This was my 2nd draft. Normally I go with 4 RBs in 5 rounds but I wanted to do something different to see what happened.

1.4 – Kamara (could have taken Henry. Just a mental coin flip.
    2 – Julio Jones
3 – Kittle (these 2 were way off my normal script but I couldn’t stomach the RBs who where left)
    4 – Etienne
    5 – Robinson (it’s best ball 🤷‍♂️)

At this point I’m not sure who was picked where but the rest of the team is …

QB – Roethlisberger, Watson, Goff, Cam
RB – both Tampa and both Buffalo RBs
WR – Landry, Cooks, Crowder, Slayton, Pascal
    TE – Gronk, Hurst

I liked this team more last night lol

This is my favorite zero RB one (again on DK)

    QBs
    Mahomes
    Wentz

    RBs
    Melvin Gordon
    Hines
    McKissic
    Tarik Cohen

    WRs
    Michael Thomas
    Mike Evans
    OBJ
    Juju
    Chark
Hardman/Robinson/Pringle (all 3 for the stack)
    TY Hilton
    AJ Green
    Zaccheus

    TEs
    Kelce
Mo Alie Cox/Doyle (can’t stop taking Doyle!!!)

A lot of people will look at this roster and vomit. But I LOVE it. I think MG3 is way undervalued this season. I also have 3 other backs with big time pass catching upside. I am also 4 way stacked with KC (best offense in NFL) and Indy (I’m a Wentz truther). I also have Michael Thomas, Fuller and Juju who I love this season. In hindsight I should’ve grabbed a 5th RB with a stable floor but I went all-in and committed to the zero RB.

  • thedkexperience

I’m about to fire up draft number 3. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have a hundred teams by September.

  • superjon

These are just my starters for the two I’ve made so far.

    Roster 1
    Tua
    Zeke
    Jacobs
    Ridley
    Thielen
    Waddle
    Tonyan
    Hollywood

    Roster 2
    Russ
    Ekeler
    Michael Carter
    Metcalf
    Robinson
Waddle (Fins fan with high hopes)
    Andrews
    Hines

  • superjon

I also made the mistake of auto drafting towards the end without selecting enough players to my auto draft pool and ended up with Deschaun as my last pick. Is he even playing this season?

  • thedkexperience

That’s a fantastic auto pick assuming you mean Deshawn Watson.

He isn’t yet technically suspended. He hasn’t been released, fired or in any way reprimanded. Best I can tell it’s dozens of civil lawsuits and zero criminal lawsuits. There isn’t much precedence for his situation.

That’s a long winded way of, yes, he’s gonna get suspended but we don’t know if that’s 2 games, 8 games or the season. You might get 8 games of a top 5 QB for essentially free.

  • superjon

Yeah Watson. Okay cool I haven’t really been following the story that closely.

  • thedkexperience

    Draft 3: Pick 8

I started the draft with Jonathan Taylor at 8 followed by Deandre Hopkins, Micheal Thomas and Josh Jacobs. Pretty happy with how it started. I waited on QB again and got Matt Ryan, Daniel Jones, Jared Goff and threw a final round dart on Drew Locke cause football is weird sometimes.

QB – Ryan, DJ, Goff, Locke

RB – Taylor, Jacobs, Eitenne, Robinson (this seems to be a pattern), Drake, someone named Johnson from the Jets and Mack. I’m a handcuff aficionado.

WR – Hopkins, MT, Cortland Sutton 🧐, Landry, HR3 and AJ Green. I feel like Sutton is either amazing value or this will be ridiculous by week 3.

TE – Gronk, Jonnu, and Jimmy Graham. I love best ball.

  • thedkexperience

Looking back over the draft here are my biggest take aways.

1 – Kyle Pitts will be on none of my teams. I’m sure he’s a nice kid and will be great one day but nah … 38 overall, ironically 1 spot above Julio, is too high for a rookie TE. Care to know who the last rookie TE with 1000 yards was?

2 – I didn’t get him this time but per point 1, people are disrespecting Julio Jones. He’s going to be on a lot of my teams.

    3 – Odell went 70.

4 – To explain how vital it is to keep drafting all the way through I would like to present picks 161, 162 and 163.

Daniel Jones, Todd Gurley and Jameis Winston

Jones and Winston could be top flight fantasy QBs full stop. It’s not the most likely outcome for either but it’s not crazy for either, um either.

Gurley could sign with someone like the Lions and score 11 TDs on accident. In best ball you don’t need someone to score every week, just a lot when they do score. Gurley can do that.

  • Prisoncoptodd

Please join the 3 or 6 man sit & go I will smash you with that idea.

1 – TE is kind of a black hole after Kelce, Waller and Kittle. Pitts will be the 2nd option behind Ridley in what should be a bad team. It’s not out of the question for him to way over perform just because he will get a lot of targets, playing from behind, on a bad team. I’m limiting my exposure for now but I have some Ryan/Ridley/Pitts so far and not hating it.

2 – Julio is in a great spot. I think he will have a lot of 3 catches for 60 yards games but I can see some 10 catches for 150 yards and 2 TDs when they play a team that’s takes away Henry.

3 – Looooooove OBJ. Especially in the WR3-4 territory where he is now. On about 30 teams I have him on 8-10.

4 – This take on Gurley makes me think. I loathe Daniel Jones and will have zero on 150 teams. But also love Winston on the Saints. I might add in some Gurley late.

I see you posting about Goff and I have largely avoided all Lions. They seem like the worst team in the NFC, why are you high on him?
