I was surprised to see that there was not a best ball thread for discussion. Assuming the mods have no issue with one being created, I may as well kick things off.

The biggest takeaway I have from my earliest DK BB drafts is that Jameis Winston is wildly under valued this year. In BB in particular I don’t see any legit argument for going QB early. There are a lot of reasonably safe bets for 4000 yards going at QB3 prices between Winston, Goff, and Roethlisberger. There are also plenty of guys with high week to week upside like Daniel Jones and Fitzmagic available late.

Are you guys really leaning into QB late as a strategy this year too?

This is why I don’t bother drafting my Best Ball teams until the week before the season starts.

What’s the advantage of drafting paid entries in these contests two months (or more!) before the season starts?

You can always have bad luck with injuries.

I don’t think the advantage is any greater if you wait until closer to the season, unless maybe if you’re in a draft with people auto-drafting guys who are not playing.

I remember last year there would always be one person taking Damien Williams on DK in the middle rounds. Either they had the whole thing auto-drafted or only did the first few picks and then left.

Yeah, but at this point depth charts aren’t even finalized yet. A lot can change during training camp.

Isn’t that the entire point of drafting best ball drafts early in that if you can predict depth charts you can pick up guys in rounds 15+ that will being going in the top 8 rounds by the week before the season. I 100% agree there is no reason to draft this early if your playing single leagues. However I do think there is some value in taking shots for the massive multi entry ones if you feel like you have a feeling on a guy before the masses find out about him during training camp.

I don’t draft this early as I won’t even pretend I have any clue what teams will do in a month.

That is an excellent point. I may draft a few $3 squads in the next couple of weeks to test out this strategy.

    Oh no way-

Those who do early research and attempt to predict the outcomes of training camps based on information still have an edge. I totally disagree. Why wait until EVERYONE has the same information??? thats not fun—- get those guys you really want now before their ADP sky rockets up in mid August

I’ve only done a couple so far; but definitely an edge in these early ones as there are some suspect picks after the 2nd round and very few attempts at stacking or in drafting the handcuffs/backup RB if you took RB1 from a team.

With respect to an injury happening now or in preseason; it’s no different than losing Saquon in Week One – probably more of an edge drafting now against names I don’t recognize than when the “experts” start loading up.

Exactly. I don’t see best ball as an ADP exercise to see who can get closest a week before the actual season. All my best teams last year were ones where I had identified guys early (like Antonio Gibson) that I believed in and could get in rounds 8-12 every time.

Also, I am able to double and triple stack two different teams in every draft with almost no issue. As drafts get sharper you are less able to do that.

I’m 86 deep at this point and wanted to get in 100 before the preseason started.

On the experts side I’ve been in several drafts with RGs own ebeimfohr who is a huge proponent of the zero RB strategy (or hero RB strategy) but now everyone is on that so if you see him in one of your drafts get ready for some running back value haha.

Yah I’ll probably end up with 10 before pre-season and another 10 during pre-season.

I don’t totally believe in zero-RB especially in full PPR on DK when there are some premium pass catching RB options. However, if I get a later 1st RD pick and CMC, Kamara, etc are gone then I’ll subscribe to the near-zero RB approach and load up first on some WR’s TE’s and QB stacks

Anyone know who won the DK best ball milly maker last year?

  • tvegas40

I was in a best ball tourney draft on underdog this morning and someone took 5 QBs and 4 TEs. Interesting strategy I’d say…

1 – TE is kind of a black hole after Kelce, Waller and Kittle. Pitts will be the 2nd option behind Ridley in what should be a bad team. It’s not out of the question for him to way over perform just because he will get a lot of targets, playing from behind, on a bad team. I’m limiting my exposure for now but I have some Ryan/Ridley/Pitts so far and not hating it.

2 – Julio is in a great spot. I think he will have a lot of 3 catches for 60 yards games but I can see some 10 catches for 150 yards and 2 TDs when they play a team that’s takes away Henry.

3 – Looooooove OBJ. Especially in the WR3-4 territory where he is now. On about 30 teams I have him on 8-10.

4 – This take on Gurley makes me think. I loathe Daniel Jones and will have zero on 150 teams. But also love Winston on the Saints. I might add in some Gurley late.

I see you posting about Goff and I have largely avoided all Lions. They seem like the worst team in the NFC, why are you high on him?

Bobby Tonyan is going 90-100ish and I would smash the over of a +\- 8 tds.

Tell that to the guys who drafted James Robinson in the 15th last year 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Stangs13

I know there was some talk about not drafting best ball yet but the $3 tournament is already 80,000/116,000 full. I bet that fills within the next two weeks.

  • Smallchimp

I get not wanting to draft for non-BB leagues this early, but I’m not sure that it makes sense to wait super late in BB. It seems like the whole point of it is just making a portfolio of shares of players and trying to get players at a value. Unless you’re super low volume, you might as well draft all offseason imo

  • jarredsc7

WTF did they do to the lobby interface? It’s been impossible to fill a league all day. Fail.

  • jarredsc7

“Exactly only noobs draft best ball teams this early.”

This is like the worst of all bad takes. The best players are prepared already while everyone else is winging it. This is EXACTLY the time you should be playing best ball. Yes, there are injuries that perhaps will impact teams. But now is where you can gain leverage before 200k people play in 3-4 weeks.

  • nickbloggerman

Yeah can’t enter a lobby on the app right now so none of them are filling. Super annoying but I’m sure they’re working on it; at least you can see how many people are entered in total now.
