I was surprised to see that there was not a best ball thread for discussion. Assuming the mods have no issue with one being created, I may as well kick things off.

The biggest takeaway I have from my earliest DK BB drafts is that Jameis Winston is wildly under valued this year. In BB in particular I don’t see any legit argument for going QB early. There are a lot of reasonably safe bets for 4000 yards going at QB3 prices between Winston, Goff, and Roethlisberger. There are also plenty of guys with high week to week upside like Daniel Jones and Fitzmagic available late.

Are you guys really leaning into QB late as a strategy this year too?

I find it remarkable how often people avoid players with minor injuries who have the Q tag. In most of my drafts they are going anywhere from 1 to 4 rounds later than they should based on their up-to-date rankings. These are all guys who are expected to be ready to go for Week 1 and could suit up today if it was the regular season.

I think many casual players also are overly reliant on DK’s rankings, which are all out of wack. Kelce #5 overall? Lol.

I’m more concerned about load share changing significantly than a “Q” tag early in preseason. That said, sometimes nagging injuries or things like “tired legs” are red flags that you do have to watch out for in news out of camp. My question was more for those that have witnessed camp themselves than what is generally reported in MM.

Thoughts on David Montgomery? I’ve seen a pretty wide margin in selection for him during BB drafts. Is it because of his slow start in camp or are people thinking Cohen returning from injury and picking up D. Williams will eat into his share?

I think he’s the most underrated RB in football and will return late first round value at mid third round prices. Nearly every back splits some carries so I’m sure that Williams and Cohen will get some share but nothing that happened late last year makes me think this is anything but a career year for Montgomery.

I hope you’re right since I’m taking him with 10th in the 3rd.

I have absolutely zero issue with Kelce at 5 and think the argument is there for him to be 3. You can basically just have Kelce and take a TE in round 17 and be done with it, while gaining a ton of points on everyone except maybe the Waller and Kittle owners each week.

DK is going off with best ball contests this year, they’re going to sell everything out with ease.

I still don’t see how the $20 is going to fill…almost half empty with 19 days to go. They definitely sized the lower stakes contests correctly though.

Glad to see that it looks like Best Ball is here to stay!

Just did a draft and I have had teams draft 5 QBs before on DK but had my “first” draft with 2 teams taking 5 QBs each. It made some interesting lineups to say the least! Good luck

Yeah I had a draft where one guy took Mahomes, Allen, Lamar and Brady in a row. I quickly took Kyler Murray a little before adp so That I didn’t miss out on a top QB. Hopefully my should team win since no other good team should have a better QB than me lol.

How many TE’s does everyone pick, assuming they don’t get Kelce or Waller?

I have no idea if I know what I’m doing. (I think last year I did poor at the pre-season best ball, made money on the ones they offered once the season started), but I’ve drafted 3 teams and my te’s are as follows…

    1: Thomas, Engram, Schultz
    2: Kittle, Arnold
    3: Fant, Engram, Arnold

Three or four, evrn those w/Waller. Gotta account for injuries.

i think the rule is that you pick 2 TEs if you get an elite option and 3 if you don’t.

Saw a draft between high stakes sharks this weekend. Kelce went #4, Waller #9. Kittle was next but in the 2nd round. After that only Hockenson and the rookie Pitts were taken in the first 5 rounds.

If they are drafting Waller 9th overall they aint no sharks, more like minnows.

Eh, the point is that if you’re drafting 20 players and only need to start 2 RBs, sacrificing one high-end RB to get a weekly TE1-2 (overall) performance is probably fine. TE is one of the positions with the highest differentiation between top-end guys and replacement level, so ensuring you have the former is a solid move. It’s more likely you’ll bink RB1-2 (out of 1-12, 12-24) performances out of the bunch of RBs you take than getting a meaningful TE performance out of the few you draft.

I much much rather have a sure fire RB1 over the TE 2/3 anyday of the week. Drafting a TE in the 1st round besides Kelce has never been a thing.

There is more to this, must be a TE premium league

Between NFFC, Underdog, and DK, I think I’ve probably done 30-40 of these and haven’t yet obtained the 1.01. I think I’ve had the 1.07 about 15 times though.

You’re not accounting for the fact that you’re getting your starting lineup decided for you after the fact. RBs drafted in the 1st/2nd aren’t always your top RB week-by-week, between a lull performance by the first round RB and a great performance by a later round RB, you can end up with that 1.XX RB on the bench. It’s less likely a TE like Kelce/Kittle/Waller ends up benched due to another TE passing them

I completely agree with this. In a standard redraft start sit league I go RB RB in the first 2 rounds virtually every time because it’s so key to have guys you can start there confidently. But in best ball, most of my teams are zero RB or hero RB, and Kelce is easily my most popular first round pick because he gives you such a huge advantage over most teams at TE, plus it allows me to just grab another one in round 15 or so and be done at that position. Not needing to spend a pick on a third TE allows me to take another shot on a upside handcuff RB, or a pass catching one with an OK floor.

Expect you’re not making your own coaching decisions in BB. If you spam 3 mid level TEs, or even 3 barely above free agents TEs, you will be rewarded with whomever scores the most that week.

The whole problem in regular fantasy with using mediocre TEs is trying to play guess the touchdown. If Gronk, Ebron and Ertz all score 4 each (which is a low estimate) you’re gonna have 10 to 12 of those TDs in your lineup. Trying to do that in regular fantasy would probably net you half that.
