DraftKings informed us yesterday that they are disabling the opt-in RotoGrinders rankings feed while they thoroughly examine all of their policies and protocols.

While this is an unfortunate blow, it’s completely justified and even expected.

We’re entering a new age of DFS. We need to treat these things like they would be treated in a regulated industry. Everything needs to be more transparent.

Short term we’ll be exploring alternative systems and discussing this with our other feed providers. Long term we’re confident we’ll find a solution that will allow us to maintain some type of rankings system, but it could change drastically from what we have now. It could be based completely off of GPPs displayed publicly in the lobbies, for example. For our current system we’re importing top 20% finishing winning results in heads up, 50/50, or tournaments.

While rankings aren’t for everyone, we think they serve a vital role in an industry like DFS. They help put faces to screen names, create celebrity players and community, and give goal-oriented players extra motivation. DraftKings, Fanduel, and other partners see the value in rankings and have supported us for years. We really appreciate that support and we’ll be working with them to figure out a system that works going forward.

UPDATE 10/9 – FanDuel recently has made the same decision to disable our results feed from them. Again, this is both justified and expected. Our plan is the same as it was yesterday—to explore alternative systems of recording results in the short term and re-evaluate long term solutions once we have more clarity on their decisions.

GPP only rankings would be a more true ranking system as opposed to having the players who pump the most volume in moving to the top… could be a blessing in disguise

I’ll do you one better how about a Cash game only rankings and a GPP only ranking?

Thanks for your efforts on this man. I know it’s not an ideal situation for RG but from a proprietary data standpoint it makes total sense in the short term. Don’t sweat those who cannot seem to see the forest through the trees.

No Big deal on the Stats from DK…Now you feel my frustration while playing at Yahoo.

I sent an email to their support saying how disappointed I am in this decision and that while I supported them in their recent troubles I feel that this is a step in the wrong direction. To give the perception of less transparency to the people who have supported them all along is not the way to go.

The big issue the whole week has been WHO HAS ACCESS TO THE DATA and see ownership percentages.

This makes 100% sense that DK would kill the feed, while they evaluate everything.

DK can be transparent in other ways, but this is 100% the right thing to do at this time.

Are you suspending all scoring until a new system is in place or just with DK? Also did this have a big impact on leader board? Curious how the guy in first scored 167k points this month alone.

It’s rankings. Why would this make 100% to kill that feed? Common sense tells me that for the entire life of a site (day 1 to the end) should have free and easy access to all finishes by players. WHERE the $$ is going should be at the top of the list for transparency – OF COURSE we don’t need names/phone #s… just something trackable like user/nick-names.

Ownership % and access is a completely different topic.

If anything, I could see media outlets picking up this and more accusations of hiding/not being transparent.

IF this is only temporary for an audit, ok, maybe. But it’s super-odd DK is the only one doing this (?) and sure seems to go against everything Jason was saying.

Figures, after playing DFS the past year or so I finally decided to create a profile here a couple days ago.
I only play a couple dollars a day, so it’s not like I was going to threaten any Leader Boards, but I thought it would be fun to better track my results.

Seeing this is a bummer. Especially so, since the biggest draw (to me) of results tracking here was keeping track of my DraftKings wins. I can already see my overall wins on FanDuel, and unless I’m missing something, that’s not the case on DK’s. Having that done here interested me, and seemed much more fun to have that incorporated and not just tracking the results myself.

FWIW – Count me among those who’s initial perception (how it looks in relation to the current climate) to this is negative. Willingly creating less transparency when it comes to individuals ad results is just as, if not more, troubling than any of the potential third-party information issues.

  • dude_abides7

I would be surprised if this is permanent. To start, DK’s first action and advisement from legal is to close their gates while this investigation is going on. This is common sense. Assuming all checks out with their systems and they get the all clear I don’t see how sharing WINNING ONLY contests creates a data collaboration issue that can be exploited. Especially considering (in the case of RG) we the user expressly give RG the permission to pull this data when we link our accounts. This is making the assumption that all RG is being given is top 20% winning contests. That is what they assert, so I don’t see the issue with that.

The future differences may be that there is more of a delay in this info passing through due to a change of security levels and data scrubbing or we, as users, may need to request the data ourselves from DK and then have an apparatus in place at RG to import it.

If you have a rankings system, it needs to consist of cash game play. Someone who lucks their way into $1,000,000 shouldn’t have notoriety over someone who puts up great lineups over and over again.

I hear you loud and clear dre, although I’m optimistic we’ll end up landing on a rankings system that works well and provides similar value – even if it is GPP-only based.

Not sure if its feasible, but could you not have a system were people upload their own results? Kind of like you do with bankroll tracker. I would love to here if this is an option?

  • Heatfan8690

I just don’t get it. If they are going to be more regulated, why would they go backwards and show less. I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am asking a question. Another question, If we use stocks as an example, what would this be similar to? Would this be like a mutual fund showing/not showing what stocks they have in their portfolio? Or is it more like an earnings report? This is not a rhetorical question, I am asking for feedback.

I also think of poker. I mean if I want to play in a tournament at Hard Rock/Borgata etc. I have to have a players card. My results are then published in Hendon mob and other databases. People can then see my results.
I mean my opinion is that Draft Kings even more than any other DFS wants to do it right. But this just feels like it will allow a loophole for the rules they just enacted.

We’ve considered a system where members can send us their own results, but any such system opens the door for people to spoof what they are sending to us.

Any member who’s climbing the rankings quickly with large scores in tournaments would of course get caught in the lie as soon as anyone tries to corroborate their results on the sites themselves, but there are many ways to climb the rankings surreptitiously with large volumes of heads-up contests that never actually existed and can’t be corroborated/proven to be false.

  • gencoimports

I think the system is fine the way it is. Anyone who doesn’t want their results posted doesn’t have to opt in. It should be that simple.

I look forward to when the feed import will hopefully resume.

Nothings easy Nothings easy. Great answer I assumed you guys were thinking of all options. I am waiting for the thread in a few months that states “ We have 4 months of DK results to process so please give us a bit before you email looking for them” There is really nothing you can do so make the best of the situation and move on.

WTH … I hope DK looks at this and decides to allow the rankings to continue. I enjoy seeing how I stack up against my peers. There shouldn’t be an legality issues here as you have to opt in for the data to be shared. I trust that Cal and the roto team will work with DK to bring this rankings system back for your customers!!

Why is someone winning a big tournament just lucky? If they win two or more are they super lucky?

I thought this was a game of skill and if their skill is tournaments, why should they be excluded?

  • sports_nerd

Suggestion: Since the ranking system is going through revision, can we include losses in the rankings? This may be too much data to keep track of, but the way the rankings were, someone who took down a GPP with 200 lineups entered with 100+ losing entries, was equivalent to someone who took down the same $ GPP with 3 lineups and 2 losing entries.

I am really curious about the top few on TPOY the last 2 days as well.. all from a single $10 tournament on DK that had 99999999 entrants? How did I not hear about a $1 billion tourney lol?

I realize that there are plenty of skilled tournament players. My point is that really good cash game players shouldn’t be excluded, which is the way it seems to be going.
