Well I would say your NHL algorithm/model you use is a little off

I couldn’t possibly agree with this any more with what I’ve seen this season, though my concerns are more in regard to sizing than payout structure.

As a small time player, contests like the Twine are a bit more than I’d like to spend each night and I typically stick to the Daily Dollar, $3 Enforcer, and $4 Forecheck. The sizing of these contests this season have been such that I’ve logged in before 7AM (eastern) to see them 90+% full. I’ve missed out on the Forecheck at least once this season because I didn’t log in until around 9. There’s usually a second generation contest posted, but playing a gpp for the smallish prizes is these second gen contests isn’t always appealing and I’ll skip these.

To be fair, this is typically on days with smaller slates and there are other days when I don’t see these issues… but the contest sizing for hockey – particularly on smaller slates – has felt VERY off this season.

I know you always say that you use data driven metrics to define your offerings, but I’ll say that the small and inconsistent sizing leads to a negative feedback loop where we (or at least I) just stop looking for contests because there’s little confidence I’ll find what I like.

I mean I think those things can go hand and hand though. I “reserve” early but there’s definitely been times I skipped playing because nothing was “left”.

I can’t fathom how day to day offerings are so much different. I know they are dynamic but even then things change too much. Give bigger contests a go, that’s all we’re asking!!!

You guys remember a couple weeks ago when they ran the Micro Millions promotion? They filled the first 25¢ contest so fast that they made a second one the same size (they were at least 20,000, maybe even 40,000-entry contests). And it was awesome.

So there’s obviously demand. Undershooting these contests absolutely crushes everyone. Us and DK. And it’s not just that they undershoot them by a little… These contests are way too small across each NHL slate and in every format.

It’s limiting how much I play every day and by a lot. I want to max out all those 25¢ contests so bad every night and instead I’m only playing a dollar here and there.

I love just about everything you guys do at DK but I had to vent about this.

  • rgriffin37

I just received an email from DK confirming the error and that my reward tier had been corrected. I checked the app and it is fixed. Hopefully everyone else will have the same result.

There is two sides to this debate when it comes to the $0.10 and $0.25 contests. I don’t play NHL but I do for PGA and like when these contests fill by Monday and get replaced with more small ones. That way I can get in like 300+ lineups for under $40 and clear out all of the volume base achievements. I know I am not alone in doing stuff like that so i wouldn’t be shocked to learn DK actually makes more rake by offering 10 small $0.25 and $0.10 contests vs. just 1 big one as the achievement chases will max out everyone offered chasing the crowns for as little investment as possible. However I always thought they do the PGA pretty well with 1 large contest at $0.25 and $0.10 and at the same time offer 1000 player ones that when they fill they add another so you can max out about 10-15 of them while still having a large one that takes all week to fill.

    Re: NASCAR

The current post race disqualification system needs an overhaul. While it doesn’t happen often, the current practice of “disqualifications dont matter for DK results” is simply unacceptable. The results of the race are fundamentally changed after the fact based on technical inspections, the idea that this is not reflected in DK scoring and subsequent payouts is not good business, IMO. If Tyler Reddick was DQ’d, his DK result should reflect the actual race result – not where he crossed the line. The car was illegal by the rule book, even if only by a small amount. If a play is not ruled a catch in football (due to the legality of the play) you don’t get the points for the reception or yardage for the player, why is this any different?

There are no problems stat correcting football or basketball slates, it happens all the time and it wildly swings payouts for folks with considerably more money in play than nascar. What is the difference in your stats provider changing stats after a football game that affects the outcome but not honoring the official posted race results after the fact by nascar?

Thank you for providing Trucks, Xfinifty and Cup slates. Also thank you for being engaged with the community here. Its a very big deal and I hope other members let you know too!!

Although I very much enjoy seeing a $70k guaranteed Twine on a random Thursday evening, I had to comment once more about the absurd payout structure.

$20,000 to first place. $200 to tenth place.

That is ridiculous. Maybe DK’s algorithm is saying that $20k up top attracts more entrants than $15k would, but does DK’s algorithm take into account what’s best for DK? And maybe that isn’t one single entrant winning more every night, but instead more entrants winning more, so that they can all feed that money back into the DK grinder?

Although my, and many others’, dream of a standard 20% of the prize pool to first, 10% of first to tenth, may not be consistently realistic, this absurd structure is just, well, absurd.

I have the toughest time finding the correct “low stakes” GPPs I want to play.

I couldn’t possibly agree with this any more with what I’ve seen this season, though my concerns are more in regard to sizing than payout structure.

So there’s obviously demand. Undershooting these contests absolutely crushes everyone. Us and DK. And it’s not just that they undershoot them by a little… These contests are way too small across each NHL slate and in every format.

There is two sides to this debate when it comes to the $0.10 and $0.25 contests.

We hear your opinions loud and clear, and we’ve also heard viewpoints from other players who have slightly different preferences. We aim to offer contests that have a little something for everyone, which influences both the optimal scope and the optimal payout curve for each contest run. We will continue to keep all opinions in mind as we review the demand data. Remember – our contest sizing and entry fee stakes are dictated by our prediction models for demand. If you want to influence the model, favor the contests you want us to adjust. Our modeling measures the pulse of the community, our operations team will be happy to adjust as the community “tells” us to by measuring the community’s entry patterns!

Considering that there has not been any proactive communication regarding the issue (at least that I have seen), there is definitely room to improve here. A simple email to users alerting them to the issue seems like it would save a ton of customer support time while also keeping users in the loop.

Our outstanding (and very appreciated – it’s been a long busy NFL season that just wrapped up!) Support Team was able to work directly with the impacted users to ensure the data was ultimately correct. That is what matters in the end, in the big picture the integrity of the data is far more important than short term scenarios where the data needs to catch up. All of our Rewards is derived from play history, and then extends outwards. Therefore our master playing experience tables must be confirmed to be clean first before we can build for the following month’s rewards. Not to worry, if we slip slightly in time we always make it right – nobody is left behind, and all Crowns will always be accounted for without exception.

In some instances, DK_Assist may post a tweet or we may send an email to all affected users. We recommend following DK_Assist on Twitter for the most up-to-date information at all times and you are also welcome to utilize our instant chat support at https://www.draftkings.com/help/contact-us for time-sensitive assistance specific to your account.

I just received an email from DK confirming the error and that my reward tier had been corrected. I checked the app and it is fixed. Hopefully everyone else will have the same result.

Crowns earned during February have been completely accounted for in Daily Rewards tiers. If you believe this is not the case for your account, please let our Support Team know at support@draftkings.com so that we can review.

I also don’t understand how CBB Ironman crowns have been added to monthly totals for some players and not others.

Standard error checking. Better to be safe than sorry, this small blip allows us to have accurate tiers and crown accounting – which after all is the most important thing that everyone expects from us – and we deliver (albeit a little later than we would like – you have our commitment that we are working on improving how we communicate when this occurs. Give us some time, we will get it right!).

Why are there $1 satilites for NBA, Golf, etc but not NHL?

We welcome all contest suggestions at support@draftkings.com. Sometimes we are able to accommodate the request and sometimes we are not, but all suggestions about any facet of our products are always tracked, monitored, and shared directly with relevant stakeholders throughout the organization.

With that said, we shared your request with the team. If our predictive algorithms suggest $1 satties are a good investment, it will happen. We let the data tell us what to do so there is no human bias in our contest entry fee & sizing decisions, but it can never hurt to ask!

Also, Please credit the tickets for the NBA Feb 15-26th promotion.

These were credited earlier today. You should see them and have an email.

Tickets for the NBA Shoot and Score promo were credited on Monday! If you haven’t been able to locate your ticket yet, our Support Team will be happy to help you track it down – just email us at support@draftkings.com.

What is your deadline for having all tax forms released?

as anyone in NJ received tax forms from DK Sportsbook?

That date was this past week, all tax forms for DFS, Sportsbook, and Casino are up to date, have been released, and are accessible via the Document Center.

The current post race disqualification system needs an overhaul. While it doesn’t happen often, the current practice of “disqualifications dont matter for DK results” is simply unacceptable.

We cover this topic in the NASCAR thread here: https://rotogrinders.com/threads/nascar-2021-dk-scoring-changes-3547054

No Jukebox for Hockey on 3/3?

We were able to run a Jukebox the last two nights, but as you can tell we like to change things up – that is rather normal for DraftKings. It helps us A/B test different contest offerings, prize pools, and payout structures to determine which way the wind is blowing. It may not look like it, but we are actually following the direction the community shows us through it’s play.

Maybe DK’s algorithm is saying that $20k up top attracts more entrants than $15k would, but does DK’s algorithm take into account what’s best for DK?

You are correct, generally speaking a $20k top attracts far more entries than a $15k would.

Think of this as a chicken or the egg issue. The community wants bigger contests; when we take big steps to grow the game you are more likely to see structures that pay heavy up top until the ecosystem equalizes.

DK has armies of analysts combing over our entry data to assure we are making the right decisions in the long run, backed by years of experience managing risk. We remember reading in this very forum that DFS was dying three years ago, yet the truth is DraftKings is seeing record breaking entries in our Daily Fantasy contests. More entries = bigger prize pools in the long run. To get us there, we need to incorporate some big moves, an attractive top end is really appealing to the opponents that you just might want to play against ;-)

There is a method to our madness, it may not be so obvious – but it is clearly working!

I love just about everything you guys do at DK but I had to vent about this.

Also thank you for being engaged with the community here. Its a very big deal and I hope other members let you know too!!

Ok so I think the all-star break is a good time to address something that has plagued NBA DFS this year: the prevalence of the post-lock scratch.

On at least 4-5 occasions this year a player has been ruled out of a contest after the lock time for that particular contest. We’re not talking PJ Tucker either… It’s happened to Steph, Kawhi, and now last night PG13 (although I guess technically he was ruled out one minute before lock.)

Point being, it’s a disaster for DFS players of all levels when their lineup is dead 2 minutes after lock. Sure, the pros can survive it and mathematically it will help lineups without that player as much at it will hurt lineups with the player in the long run, but for casual/new players it’s incredibly disheartening and a HUGE turn-off. I believe the ecosystem is beginning to feel the effects of this as I’ve noticed several big contests on both major sites have had trouble filling in the last week or so.

My question is this: why is it that slates lock at the top of the hour, when in reality no game starts until AT LEAST 7 minutes after the posted start time? (and usually it’s more like 10-15 minutes.)

Those extra minutes are critical to mitigating these late scratch situations that, through no fault of DK’s, have become way too common this season. I strongly encourage your contest ops team to look into this over the all-star break and see if anything can be done.

Lock the NBA contests at 7:05.. 10:05.. give the 5 additional minutes to adjust to a late scratch.. this week I got crushed with the phantom scratches of Kawhi and P George…. half my entry fees for each slate. I was furious. No NBA game starts before 5 minutes after anyhow.

Love the idea 👍…..99.9% of the time the games start 10 minutes after the indicated start time, however on rare occasion, like Holiday weekend slates, I’ve seen games start on time. So there would have to be a work around of some sort.

    Couple of other ideas……

How about if a player is scratched he gets unlocked, and you can sub for him. As long as he’s not in the last game of the night, you can replace him with a player who’s game hadn’t started yet. If the scratch happens to be the last game of the night, then you get stuck.

Or…..if a player gets scratched within a minute or two of lock or after, you get 3x his salary. Very rarely do players get less than 3x their salary. And it’s enough where it won’t prevent an otherwise strong lineup from cashing, yet won’t put a lineup over the top to win or finish in the top 10 of a tournament.

Or maybe a company with a market cap of 25 billions pays one person to watch/monitor every game (if they don’t already), double check stats and…. CLICK THE MOUSE WHEN THE REF HAS THE BASKETBALL IN HIS HAND TO TIP TO LOCK THE GAME…. mind blown? 😂

Actually I think this has less to do with DK and more with the NBA

If MLB, NFL etc… can start the game on the minute… why can’t NBA do the same? Is stupid, really

Different strokes and all that! My stats and ROI are screaming at me to not touch a contest UNLESS it has that kind of payout structure. Glad there are choices out there for both of us, it’d be lousy if either of us had to stop playing because our preferred format was eliminated entirely.

  • eatmyturf23

DK please add 10-11% rake Hundo’s and Quintuple ups on your NHL slates. I rarely or never see them. But they would always be there in NBA or other sports.

This is the thing that keeps me from just moving my $40-50/slate entries from yahoo to you. They are crap with their customer service response and don’t manage slates (even with my early-warning feedback) and leave players off the slates. They also don’t limit low-dollar contests to the sharks. You have high rake on big gpps, I get it, and people pay it — me too, in moderation. Give me a way to balance it out and I’ll bring my volume to you, and so will others I’d bet. This is $1500-2000 in rake annually per every person you convert over who is like me.

  • manoffewwords

Wish I could play more golf showdowns, but DK always has only one contest with good $, and this is always expensive and top heavy. example: $250k with $20 entry tomorrow. Why not atleast put one contest like $30 to $50k with $4-$5 entry. Why appease only the big game hunters? Step up your game DK.

    Edit. I see you added a $5- $20k.

Remember – our contest sizing and entry fee stakes are dictated by our prediction models for demand. If you want to influence the model, favor the contests you want us to adjust.

Once again the early hockey slate contests have filled hours before the slate locks. I want to “favor the contests” I’d like to play but I’m not sure how to do that when they fill up long before anyone outside the east coast is out of bed. I could express my preference by entering the second generation contest that pops up, but I’m honestly not interested in max entering a $4 contest for a $60 top prize.

This has happened multiple times each week this hockey season. The demand is obviously there if these contests are filling so soon. I understand your reliance on data and algorithms to determine your sizing. But the flip side of that is the fact that algorithms are reactive and if they don’t react fast enough then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy – i.e. at what point do I simply stop looking for the $3-5 entry contests because I simply assume they aren’t there? Don’t let your algorithm wait too long to react to demand because the demand may leave before it does.
