MLB Update: Lowball is back for a limited time!

In DK Lowball, the lowest score wins — so if you’re worst, you’re first.

Our inaugural Lowball contest of the 2018 MLB season will be tomorrow’s MLB Lowball $50K Platinum Sombrero

DK Lowball is a Pick’Em style format, which means players will be grouped similarly by expected output and points. The goal of Lowball is to score the fewest fantasy points possible. Contest results will be determined by the total points accumulated in ascending order (from lowest to highest) by each individual entry. As an added twist, you can earn a -20 point bonus for selecting a player starting in the game. This makes it less valuable to draft players who will be benched.

A few things to note about Lowball scoring:

    Hitters

    • -20 Pts In starting lineup bonus
    • -2.5 Pts Caught Stealing
    • -2.5 Pts Ground into Double Play
    • -1 Pt Strikeout
    • -5 Pts 3+ Strikeout bonus

    Pitchers

    • -20 bonus starting pitcher bonus
    • -2 Pts Earned Run Allowed
    • -0.6 Pts Hit Against
    • -0.6 Pts Base on Balls Against
    • -0.6 Pts Hit Batsman

May the worst lineup be your best!

    - Steven and Christie, DraftKings Community Team

This is fantastic. This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to DFS.

$8 Rally Cap just filled 2 hours and 18 minutes before lock. I have seen no improvement in the contest sizing at all.

do players also accrue normal points in addition to the negatives or is it only the negative points?

Tuesdays $1 150 is perfect, please keep it like this with goals of moving it to a 20k with 2k to first

Good catch caleibold, we agree that payout structure was not ideal. These are the first few days of offering a $15K guaranteed $1 mini-MAX, our MLB team has been testing various structures.

We have good news for you: Tomorrow’s $15k mini-MAX will have 10% to first, and 10% of that to 10th.

    - Steven and Christie, DraftKings Community Team

Thank you! Feels just right to me. Hoping to see it grow!

Agreed, great contest. It seems to be filling up quickly.

Are you guys ever going to make it easier to withdraw entries? I can enter 150 times into a single contest with 2 clicks yet I have to manually withdraw. Don’t you think it’s kinda messed up? Say I change my mind later in the day because something came up or I just don’t feel like max entering…. do I really have to go through every single one of my entries and click the withdraw???? Seems like this is a long overdue change.

Email into support and they take care of it in seconds if you want to withdraw 150 teams etc

Don’t you think that’s kinda problematic? Why should I have to email them to withdraw entries? What if the contest fills within that timespan as I’m emailing them?

I agree there should be some sort of user interface that allows you to withdrawal from contests faster than the current process. Would be nice to have a withdrawal button, similar to the edit/export lineup button readily available on the main interface for each lineup card. I get that people might accidentally click the withdrawal entry button but I don’t see how it’s any different than when you accidentally clicked the fold button in online poker. Make it red and put it in the top left corner of the lineup card or something.

I don’t ever play 150 entries but I do get really annoyed when I enter a contest early in the morning only to have something come up in the afternoon so I won’t be around at all the hour before lock to get all the lineup info I need so I try to withdraw my entries 2-3 hours before lock only to find out the contest was poorly sized and full already so I am stuck and unable to withdraw. I feel like if you over an hour before the start of the contest you should be able to withdraw and allow someone else to take your spot instead of being forced to play when your plans change.

I would love to just be able to wait until 30 minutes before lock to build my lineups and choose my contest but by that point all the good ones were filled hours ago so it is always a daily struggle having to reserve everything 12+ hours in advance just to make sure I can actually get a spot.

Yep. DK needs to get rid of this archaic policy and adopts Fanduels. I believe you can withdraw from any contest, even if full up to 15 minutes before lock. It’s great. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and if you keep your eyes glued on the lobby, a few spots in a big GPP will become vacant. It’s like being on a waitlist.

I haven’t read all of this thread… but you have the big tournaments to attract casual players, then you fill them up before the casual players have a chance to jump in? Don’t understand this strategy.

We see how this could look from your perspective jjwd. On the bright side, our data shows that casual players tend to be the players who fill these contests early. Generally speaking, it is the aspirational and professional players who are more likely to wait to enter right before the lock.

Let’s also address the elephant in the room – we understand that if a contest locks early it can lead to a frustrating experience for a player who intended to enter. We focus on all contests holistically rather than one specific contest. DraftKings has internal goals for an acceptable time frame for the lock, when those goals miss we may work to correct the experience by adjusting the contest mix to create a ripple effect. We can assure you that when our data shows that there is a repeatable pattern of misses for a specific contest, we work to solve the problem.

PS: Not all of our big contests that cater to casual sports fans fill, for example our recent 1.11 Million NBA Finals showdown did not.

Your $1 MLB 3 Entry Max has the exact same payout as the $1 MLB Single Entry contest. The exact same. What’s the incentive aside from being able to put in 2 more entries? So for more risk (more entries albeit slightly more) you are going after the same reward amount.

Update: My apologies it’s the exact same payout as your $1 Solo Shot which is 20 entry max. My mistake but would still like to see some differentiation between the two contests in terms of payouts and prize pool.

    Let’s swing for the fences!

    Tomorrow we will offer a $.50 MLB mini-MAX with a $25k guarantee.
The payout structure will be 3000x to first, 150x to 10th place, with a 2x min cash.

PS: For those of you who needed the extra incentive to complete the Big League Achievements “Scoring Position” mission, this is your chance to earn a ton of bonus FPPS when entering the max of 150 lineups.

Well, that’s very counter-intuitive. The casual players are more likely to plan ahead? I’ll take your word for it, but it’s hard to believe. By the way, filling things early also punishes busy people, or those with 9-5 jobs.

Generally speaking, they are more likely to take action when they feel like playing, rather than waiting until the last second.

I’m appreciating these contests. Both the $1 and $0.50 variety. Been practicing 150 max entries with less risk, and its considerably more fun since there is less at stake. Let’s fill this up people!

If I’m overwhelmed by looking at 15+ hitters, imagine what Joe down the street is going to do when he has to choose between 15 players in multiple tiers…he’s going to go play the normal game

Just a friendly reminder. While there can and should be more changes, I’d like to say thanks DK for the honest answers, putting forth the effort and improving your process. I personally have played more recently because of it.

    DK, when’s the next $0.25 MINI-MAX?

  • biffrenylds

If I reserve an entry, but can’t get to the computer on time to enter a lineup, why does it automatically lock out for zero points? Why can’t I go back and add players that haven’t started yet?
