I’m enjoying the new variety of contests at DK and it looks like they made (from what I can see) some welcome changes to their pricing algorithm. But there are still some weird quirks in pricing. Franklin Barreto is 3,700? Austin Meadows and Alex Verdugo are worth almost as much as JD Martinez?

I think it would be great if DK more consistently put players of similar caliber within the appropriate price range. Second to third tier outfielders like Canha and Kiermeir should be in the 3,800-4,200 range. When you make lineups for DK and FD you realize that DK tends to price mostly interchangeable players in widely different tiers.

The two Toronto catchers used to be 2,220 or 2,300, and typically there wasn’t much difference between Jansen and some other catcher priced at 3,100. So players had incentive to take a flier on Jansen and apply the 800 dollars in savings elsewhere. I feel that stuff like this sometimes distorts how lineups are created at DK. There are pricing discrepancies and bargains that encourage ownership at all sites, but I think it happens a bit more at DK.

Some people think loose pricing makes the game difficult, but the opposite has been true in my experience. I cash more frequently at FD and somewhat more at Yahoo. There is a LOT of offense and point boosting homeruns in the game right now, and it’s in the interest of small time players to bolster their offense as much as possible. And I have no issues with with “just” 3X or min cash.

    Just my two cents.

A question. around the time you rolled out the minimax I thought you had instituted a new rule saying that players with a certain experience/winning level are prohibited from playing anything under $5.

If true, I was wondering how Chipolti Addict and his brother Papagates are covering the top 10 in the $3 birdie in PGA John Deere Classic. I know they are not the top player anymore but how did they fall so low so quick?

It’s to do with the size of the GPP/prize pool too (can’t remember the exacts) but if it’s a big GPP then I’m curious to see what DK say.

I thought about that after I sent the post. It is a 50K. Large for a $3 contest but not $600K like the $5 Drive The Green. Maybe it was a “guideline” not a rule. That grey area is where Chipolte/papagates live.

Honestly, for those that dont think any restrictions should be put on any player in regards to entry. I kind of agree. Its when DK sets up rules( which I cant find them in the site). They must be followed. If it is a question of it exceeds the limits then I think DK should revisit the issue.

cmon $3 for 50K prize pool or $5 for $600K prize pool. Where should a PRO go? If the smaller entry reaches the ceiling where a pro can play, the next level up is definitely going to be a great prize too.
    Just saying..

DK can confirm, but I believe the following is correct:

High Volume Player = Player with more than 1 million dollars in lifetime entry fees.

High Volume Players cannot enter any contest where the entry fee is $0.00-$2.99.

High Volume Players can only enter a contest where the entry fee is $3.00-$4.99 IF the total prize pool is $25,000 or greater.

High Volume Players can enter any contest where the entry fee is $5.00 or more.

I LOVE the top-heavy payout structures for many reasons. I get frustrated by the $1 mini-max sometimes because I love to play them but I want the top prize to be 15%, 20% or even 25% of the total pool. I would max out the mini-maxes occasionally on a great slate if the prizes were more top-heavy. If I’m running 100+ entries into a tournament, I’m not trying to get back like 130% of my entry fees, I want to win the damn thing and have the payoff be as big as possible when I do. If I wanted to amass a bankroll with consistent small wins built up over the course of a season, I’d play double/triple ups and H2Hs. Just call me Ricky Bobby!

And how many times have you won the 150 MAX $1 or even finished in the top 5?

Will DraftKings be able to possibly include “Big 3” basketball games in their NBA section during the summer? Not sure how their schedule is allocated and if you could get enough to do small GPP tourneys. Seems to be catching on though with a game I saw on TV today. Would probably be good for small GPP’s similar to your 1k to 1st or maybe even a 5k to 1st type deals. Not sure if enough teams play in one day to do a big GPP entry type tournament.

While this is a common narrative, it really isn’t the case. DraftKings has seen tremendous growth year over year in DFS. All important key performance indicators are positive such as active users, total contests entered, player retention, first time depositors, entry fees, etc etc etc.

Nah, DFS is a mature space, it isnt the future. DFS is growing low single digits per year, which is pretty stagnant. ’18 numbers in regulated states were low single digit growth, and that is with the boost from SD slate expansion ( which were a nice innovation although I still dont understand how they arent blatantly illegal, as Im old enough to remember when full slate golf was debatable under the UIGEA carve-out).

While my comment may have been a bit flippant, the future of DK is definitely sports betting as that is the only way the equity guys are making anything off of DraftKings (FanDuel founders didnt even make money off of FanDuel). Heck look at the RG sale, it wasn’t sold for that price because of DFS content, it was because of its potential as a sports betting affiliate site.

It isnt a dig, sports betting is the future and a massive mainstream market compared with the niche DFS market. If I was running the company Id do the exact same things as DK is doing: cut advertising, maximize short-run rake revenue to generate cash, use the cash to invest in the sports betting business. It is like business 101, milk the cash from the mature business to fund growth.

Not ideal for the players, hope the payoff is a good sportsbook although a lot of work to do on that front, but I don’t blame DK, it is the rational approach.

I’m enjoying the new variety of contests at DK and it looks like they made (from what I can see) some welcome changes to their pricing algorithm.

Just as is the case with payout & game structures, our user base is divided on player pricing. As you said yourself, some people think loose pricing makes the game more difficult, yet, you haven’t found that to be true in your experience. We are in a constant process of measuring, testing, and adjusting our player pricing for the betterment of the user experience and the betterment of the DFS ecosystem. Some key factors that are considered would be that player’s matchup, their recent performance, and the matchups/recent performances of other players they share a position with. Not to mention, player “tiers” are dynamic and constantly shuffling, players go through streaks or slumps and the evolution of pricing reflects that and much more. It isn’t so much a cookie-cutter process as some users perceive it to be.

In this instance, there is another factor – the All Star Game. Typically there is a pricing adjustment as we get back into the season, it usually takes a few days until we reach normalisation once again. What you experienced is a side effect of the more limited data available during this time of the year.

    DK can confirm

We think our Player First Initiative page speaks for itself:

All low entry fee contests are available to everyone except the highest-volume DraftKings players. The highest-volume players are ineligible to enter contests if the entry fee is less than $3.They are also ineligible to enter contests when the entry fee is less than $5 if the prize pool is less than $25,000 guaranteed.

Visit the Player First Initiative here:https://www.draftkings.com/lp/player-first to learn more.

And how many times have you won the 150 MAX $1 or even finished in the top 5?

We understand where you’re coming from, yet not everyone plays to win. Believe it or not, some users are more concerned with cashing than they are with winning the top prize in that contest, it is entirely dependant on the preference of the user. Some users incorporate a contrarian line with the goal of winning first place, others may use a chalky line with the goal of cashing – one size does not fit all. As we’ve stated before, our user base reflects a bevy of differing opinions and intentions – some enjoy the sweat of chasing the top prize, while others look to simply cash and grind it out. We love you all the same!

Will DraftKings be able to possibly include “Big 3” basketball games in their NBA section during the summer?

Due to the lack of a consistent stat provider for the Big 3 league, we will not be offering DFS contests for Big 3 games at this time. You have our commitment to continue evaluating opportunities in the future if changes occur that improve the existing barriers of entry.

Nah, DFS is a mature space, it isnt the future. DFS is growing low single digits per year, which is pretty stagnant.

It is true that we have invested a lot into Sportsbook, but that does not mean that we have moved away from re-investing in our DFS product. DFS is the pillar upon which this company was founded and we are not moving away from our core focus. The majority of our team members are employed to support DFS, that speaks volumes about our focus.

There are opportunities for growth & expansion in both DFS and Sportsbook, but instead of sacrificing one or the other, we are making a push for both.

PS: DraftKings is not a public company therefore we do not report our growth publicly. Only our investors and key employees grasp the full scope of our business growth year over year, only they have access to the data that is used to determine our growth metrics. Ignore what you hear spread from third parties as alleged fact about our growth, you can see it in the game itself – we are offering a more vibrant range of contests than ever before.

Every site has pricing quirks (Yahoo tends to overprice pitching) but from my personal experience, DK is is just a tad quicker to inflate a player’s price and slower to lower a player’s price when their production drops. And there are some head scratchers.

For example (as of this post) DK has Jarrod Dyson at 4,800, Kevin Cron at 4,300 and Kendrick at just under 5,000. It kinda makes you go “huh”? Joc Pederson is flirting with 5,000 tag but he’s still priced as a mid level player elsewhere. Stevie Wilkerson is a bargain bin player at the other sites but he’s 3,900 at DK.

I play at multiple sites and some pricing discrepancy at DK just stands out when in comparison to the rest of the field. FD has very user friendly pricing. Yahoo is similar to DK, except they give you a lot of useful players in the 10-13 range. You can find good hitters at 8,9 dollars. DK has few useful players below 3,200. 2,100-2,700 will basically get you backup catchers. When you can get Austin Meadows at 10 bucks at yahoo and 3,600 at FD, DK pricing starts to feel a bit expensive.

I like current DK pricing for the most part. It was worse last year when underachievers like Eric Hosmer was around 4,000. I think whatever algorithm DK using could be refined a bit more. I would suggest that your research team try constructing lineups at FD everyday and get feedback and impression. The difference is there.

I’m sorry, but just seen your announcement that you may push back lock of not only the slate tonight to 7:10 but also the 2nd half of the Rays/Yankee’s games today and I’m in complete disagreement. Lock is Lock, you didn’t push back locks for NBA Summer League all games locked at their start time though games ran over, also you don’t allow changes or slate locks for tennis when someone WD once contest are locked. Either it is 100% across the board on all sports or it is absolutely 0 as you have always done in the past, its not 1 or the other!

As I think I mentioned, those tourneys are not my favorite due to the relatively flat payout structure so I haven’t done it many times. That was sort of the point of my comment, I don’t play those tournies as heavily because I don’t think the payout structure is favorable to my strategy. I think other folks in this thread might take a note there, I think game selection is extremely important, and therefore I select the games where I think I have the best chance of being profitable based on my strategy rather than trying to force my system into a game format where it doesn’t fit or yield great results.

To answer your question, I’ve never gotten a 1st place, but I did land two 2nd place finishes and one 4th place finish in $1 mini-max tournies last MLB season. I have tossed some entries into a few this year, but I don’t think I have max entered one yet this season and do not have any significant results there, all my profits are coming from the formats I play frequently. I analyze my results pretty carefully, and while overall I made money on the mini-maxes last season, I was much more profitable in GPP formats with more top heavy payouts and lower max entry numbers. I’m doing just fine from a profit perspective overall, so you can pour out a 40oz for me on tax day but otherwise no need to worry about how my bankroll is doing.

DET was offered once in May and once in June. We had a third contest planned but it was rained out, and will be offered again before the season ends. HOU was offered 5x already this year, so we are less likely to feature again, yet we will keep looking for opportunities.

I’m sorry, but just seen your announcement that you may push back lock of not only the slate tonight to 7:10 but also the 2nd half of the Rays/Yankee’s games today and I’m in complete disagreement. Cancellations and Postponements are treated differently for several sports.Postponement of MLB is a standard process due to the nature of the sport, our policies are listed in the MLB rules and are followed explicitly. Please visit the respective Contest Rules page for each sport offered to view the Cancellation and Postponement policies. https://www.draftkings.com/help/rules/mlb

DraftKings may choose to adjust the Scoring Period for a Game Set at their sole discretion to accommodate schedule changes if the adjustment would move the Game Set start time by 15 minutes or less.Any games that are disabled will be indicated as such on Draft Screens. Emails and other notifications such as in-game banners are used to notify users of disabled games.
If canceled or rescheduled games result in a Game Set including only one active game and this is known before the contest start time then all contests for that Game Set will be canceled and refunded.

In last nights game to inform our users we sent out an email due to the unknown start of G2 of the doubleheader that said DraftKings will be moving the start time of the 7:05PM EST MLB sets to 7:10PM EST. Additionally, we will be moving the lock time of the Yankees/Rays game, which will be visible on the draft screen, closer to its actual start time in order to maximize the amount of time available for users to acquire lineup information.

I was much more profitable in GPP formats with more top heavy payouts and lower max entry numbers.

This is similar yet still different to the sentiment shared by many higher stakes players we come across.

will DK offer something similar to ‘Summer of Free Stuff’ ?

  • Gopackgo30

It would be really nice on the DK live app for PGA, if it were possible to have the app remove showdown players from your pool if you don’t have them on a specific day – so that you don’t receive hundreds of notifications for players you played two days ago. For example, if I play showdown PGA all four days of a tourney, I’m still seeing birdie alerts on Sunday for players I drafted on Thursday, regardless of whether I played them on any other day. It would be so cool if an app update could be created that would fix this.

Basically, I want to receive notifications only for the players I drafted on a given day, and no other previous days. I love the app by the way, and always keep my notifications on – love seeing the birdie alerts pop up.

Is there a reasoning behind the H2H payouts in the event two players draft the same lineup? For example, in the $1 H2H’s, if we both draft the same lineups we both walk away with 90c, the only winner is DK. I don’t run into this problem often, but it’s irritating when I do knowing that I’m a net loser before any of my players score points. Can there be a system implemented where if two players draft the same lineup the entry fees are refunded?

We have not announced any promotions that mimic the Summer of Free Stuff from prior years at this time. This is a good opportunity for us to mention that rewards have evolved over the past year, we now offer more ways to give back to our players than ever before – for example this time last year we only offered achievements for MLB.

    Bias from…. who?

From what I see pricing at DK is slightly less fair and consistent compared to FD. To be fair FD has a Util and C/1B hybrid spot that allows you not commit less on weaker positions. If you play consistently at DK and FD some differences are impossible to ignore. DK has the best contest selection, but FD has better pricing and more smaller contests that are winnable. Yahoo is probably the best overall product for low volume players, IMO.

That would be terrible if they did that. I don’t mind them dropping the SNF and MNF games off the main slate since it is nice to have everything wrapped up by Sunday evening but I don’t like slates with any less than 8 games.
