I’m guessing there won’t be a concrete answer on the Ironman achievement until the NBA decides how long the postponement will last. As has been said, I also think they will honor the Ironman achievement in some way depending on if the season is played in full but ends later, is shortened to some extent, etc.

Now that the NBA season is suspended and will almost certainly be shortened even if it does continue, what will DK do for all of us who are dutifully chasing the Fantasy Basketball Ironman achievement?
Yes, also hoping that all Ironman achievements are modified (if need be) to reflect whatever happens with these seasons.
I’m guessing there won’t be a concrete answer on the Ironman achievement until the NBA decides how long the postponement will last.

Everyone at DraftKings understands the feeling of uncertainty that is in the air, this is an unprecedented moment in the history of sports that fans, athletes, and supporting companies such as DraftKings are working though. We don’t have all the answers – but we did want to share that our coworkers are monitoring the situation closely. You have our commitment to follow up once we have an update regarding NBA Achievements.

Seems to me the right thing to do would be to reduce the requirement by one for each day of the suspension. That’s more or less how they seem to be treating the tennis ironman.

The adjustments made to our Tennis Achievements were in response to Tennis cancellations. The NBA has suspended the season with no cancellations at this time, therefore the circumstances are different.

Our coworkers across many different departments within DraftKings will continue to monitor the NBA suspension & adjust accordingly, in turn we will share more insight in the future as time progresses.

    Make it Reign!

Thats not too optimistic. A simple response that they will honor the achievements in some way or the other would have been nice.

People that have grinded 150+ and 130+ days in NHL and NBA are not going to be too incentivized to even look at achievements anywhere else moving forward if there is nothing done or said about these ones. We know that NBA wont start for another thirty days. Its quite simple to reduce the days needed by every day the schedule is reduced in NHL and NBA and award accordingly. We know specific achievements for goals, double doubles etc.. might not be able to be adjusted but the ironman x2 and gym rat most certainly can.

I dont want to keep grinding golf showdowns if I know they might pull the plug when they feel like. I dont care if they give a percentage of the crowns since the season wasnt completed but there should be something to instill confidence.

Maybe it’s just semantics, but I think it’s more just not wanting to commit to anything and hoping the NBA/NHL finish the season in the not to distant future in a manner that makes it a moot point and something they don’t have to make a decision on…

I will say if they were not to reward those achievements, even if those seasons are canceled, I’d be rather livid and it’s likely a point where I’m done with DFS. I think it would be pretty shitty since I’m 91% and 89% through the Ironman. It’s not some situation where they played a month and I expect them to payout for a quarter of the season.
But I guess there’s no point getting worked up until we see what happens. DK is the only site I even really play on anymore and a big reason is due to their offerings, programs and the fact they seem to govern them with some common sense (which is more than I can say for some others) so I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

You have summed it up pretty well. Im still jaded over the Bachelor Millionaire Maker scandal (Tanner still is playing on DK) that its hard to trust it but they are usually good at solving the issues and making it right.

I understand if they end the goals, double doubles, points bonus, three pointers etc… but the ironmans are a lot of crowns for someone that grinds low stakes.

To give DK the benefit of the doubt for the moment: we don’t know yet how much the season’s going to be shortened. At this point it’s still possible the leagues will tack on days at the end to make up for days they’re missing now, and pick up the schedule right where they left off.

I don’t actually think it will play out that way, but as long as it’s up in the air I can see why DK would wait for formal announcements from the leagues.

That said, it would have been nice if they’d dropped some clues about what “adjust accordingly” actually means.

Of course my proposal wasn’t worded right either: it would have been better to say “reduce the requirement by one for each day the season is shortened.”

  • TheRyanFlaherty

I didn’t think of it while typing but if the season does wind up canceled, as I said I think the Ironman (if you played every day) is around 90% complete. I think it would also be fair if they prorated it and paid out that percentage of the 25,000 crowns to whomever was in the requirement range when shortening the season.
If you’re just looking at fair from both sides, that may be the correct decision if possible.

Since I doubt we see a complete season, the easiest for DK could be as long as they have a playoffs at some point, having those games could toward all the current achievements would likely be an optimum scenario.
I would imagine these suggestions may be common sense, but I’ve begun to realize what seems common sense to me isn’t always the case, so figure it doesn’t hurt to throw a couple suggestions out there.

Please note that DK has a page addressing many concerns people have:

    https://www.draftkings.com/about/covid-19/

There is a section about achievements, as well.

“At this time, until we receive updated sport calendars from the official governing bodies of each league, Achievements targets will remain in place. Once we are able to confirm actual season schedules, targets for single tier Achievements (e.g. Ironman) will be adjusted to reflect the number of lost sport days on the calendar.”

It would be highly optimistic to believe that NBA DFS will be playable after the season resumes. Individual games might get cancelled. Teams will make more last minute decisions that occur near tipoff. Some teams might just go with their G league roster. Playing time for more established players will be unpredictable.

Depending on the slate, NBA might be a total crapshoot. We’ve seen that a few time just before he suspension. I’m hoping that DK slightly reduce rake and lower min cash line to about 25-30% in smaller or quarter contests to soften the blow for small time players. I honestly don’t see how anyone can pay even 20 dollars to play NBA after it come back.

I think you might be underestimating the impulsive, unrelenting resolve of gamblers a bit.

The DFS world embraces volatility, and the scenario you present offers up so much of that. Add in the duration of this layoff, however long it may go, and consider just how starved this crowd will be to get in on any kind of action available. This is already a group that puts real money on exhibition contests/All-Star games, so if/when the NBA season resumes, take the OVER on total entrants/entries.

And also let’s not forget the impact on the sites themselves and the measures they’ll take to drive up the size of these contests to recoup whatever losses they accrued during this shutdown period.

Volatility might be good news for high volume players who can try to cover different scenarios. For people who play a 100 bucks a day, random late scratches from teams looking to just finish out the season will end their nights. Some games might be cancelled still due to occasional scares.

I don’t foresee any half full contests, but if the kind of randomness we saw from the Bucks becomes a regular thing after the season resumes, enough people will start to make adjustments. I imagine a lot of players recently withdrew their bankroll or a chunk of it because customer service made an exception to the rule that you can only withdraw winnings. Some won’t put everything back right away and they’ll hold back further if they feel contests are too much of a crapshoot. And people might be low on cash as the economy shuts down for 2 weeks or more.

What will be financial situation of the DFS sites and player base once the season resumes? FD and DK probably can’t handle even a slight drop in patronage after months of making no real money. They might be in a rare situation where they have to heed the loud minority that complains about rake, prize structure and no late swap.

They’re running 6000-entry contests for a Turkish Superliga showdown tomorrow. When you see that volume for a contest where they have to run a notice at the top of the screen letting players know what “TSL” stands for, well…

I don’t think it’s possible to overestimate the impulsive resolve of gamblers. How many players do you think knew what teams “RIZ” and “GOZ” referred to without looking it up? How many entries will come from people who never even played a soccer contest before this week?

Well…. if you are a daily DK player and also with your job activity suspended and almost quarantined…. you play Turkish league showdown soccer

Anyway…. DK should be looking into marble races. Marbula One.

I would be shocked if they cancelled the regular season AND the playoffs. Postseason is when they make a chunk of the revenue, or so I’m told.

    Hello RotoGrinders community,

We hope this message finds everyone well. Sorry you haven’t heard from us in a few days, though we don’t have to explain how unpredictable it has been. We’re all in this together.

With this shift in the status quo, the game has changed. As a result, we made numerous on-the-fly decisions and adjustments as we encountered league & sport postponements. As a result, our coworkers across DraftKings have been working with unrelenting resolve to brainstorm creative contest offerings for all of our users. These are unchartered waters that everyone has begun to navigate for the foreseeable future.

Despite all these changes, the experience of all our players remains the top priority to us. Though there is still much to be determined, you have our assurance that we are reviewing and planning for every possible outcome.

There were numerous questions about the future of our Achievements program above. We address this, and many other topics that affect players, in our COVID-19 FAQ:

“At this time, until we receive updated sport calendars from the official governing bodies of each league, Achievements targets will remain in place. Once we are able to confirm actual season schedules, targets for single tier Achievements (e.g. Ironman) will be adjusted to reflect the number of lost sport days on the calendar.”
If you have any questions, please refer to our COVID-19 FAQ page here: https://www.draftkings.com/about/covid-19/

Stay healthy and stay safe, as we look forward to the return of a full sports calendar in the future.

The Bucks benching their entire starting unit 2 days before shutdown (without any notice) undoubtedly cost some players a lot of money. This sort of thing doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s been happening enough that real creative / unorthodox solutions like snake draft contests or the current “sim” contests will start to have appeal. LONG losing streaks are freakishly common in NBA. I cash a bit more consistently in NHL, a sports that I really don’t know much about.

DK felt compelled to overhaul hockey scoring because their players apparently wanted contests to be more exciting. Right now NBA is a boring, by the numbers optimization games (with or without optimization tools). Everyone chases the same upside and minutes. What incentive do you have to play Landry Shamet or Eric Gordon in normal situations? You can get hat tricks from some no namer in a second line in NHL and you feel excited what four upcoming skaters can do. Nothing like that exists for NBA. When injury hits the field will chase all the same players.

NBA contests have been crying out for innovation for years. I don’t have all the answers. But I’ve become a fan of DK hockey scoring and 1B/C MLB combo position at FD worked out pretty well IMO. Some level of change will be good in the long run.

We appreciate the kind words and always welcome feedback from our players (we also monitor all feature and product suggestions emailed to our Customer Support team at support@draftkings.com).

To touch on the NHL scoring revisions, we built the new system based on the feedback we heard from our players in surveys we distributed (at random) across the NHL user base for months. We felt that if we were willing to make such a massive change to the NHL DFS product, that our players deserved a seat at the decision-making table. Until the abrupt suspension of the season, this new scoring system was successfully bringing more users and more entries into our NHL DFS contests, which allowed us to grow those GPPs larger than we ever had in the past.

Though change can come either proactively or reactively, our intent is to change for the better, driving both the product and the industry forward. We’re always evaluating areas for innovation and with this ‘new norm’, we’ve accepted the challenge to take our creativity to the next level.
