So DK tweeted out millionaire maker ownership here http://playbook.draftkings.com/nfl/millionaire-maker-percent-owned-week-3/ which as of 230pm still includes ownership data for games that have not yet started. IMO this is a big leak and should never happen. It also seems like something that your average analyst should probably not have access too, and able to tell his buddies who is owned and who the best players have. Hey did you know that CSURAM has Randall Cobb going late? Given that they can access the macro results it seems probable they can access specific users during and/or before contests start.

They definitely should no be sharing it publicly, if they’re going to do it just list the full rosters in the contest and call it a day.

don’t let all this Ethan/Justine talk detract from another employee whose recent success raises suspicions:

“By day Matt works at FanDuel where he does any number of activities on the product operations side. From those in the know it sounds like Matt is involved with the day to day pricing of players and the inputs that are used to determine salaries on FanDuel. Some have said he is the player pricing expert at FanDuel. By night, Matt uses his vast DFS knowledge to clean up on DraftKings under the screen name PetrGibbons. In fact, he is currently a top 50 overall DFS player by Rotogrinders rankings while only being able to play on one site. He has also amassed this ranking in the short time frame of June 16th to October 3rd.

it’s important to remember that every DFS employee in the ilk of Ethan and Petrgibbons – guys who play DFS as well with access to data – seems likely to be investigated thoroughly. so no need for a witch hunt on our behalf, but I have to imagine guys like this is where the investigation starts.

and there’s also really nothing stopping FD and DK employees from communicating with one another to fill out any gaps between ownership/data disparity between the two sites. yet another thing that needs to be regulated.

the investigation will absolutely at least look into whether Ethan and Petrgibbons were collaborating; they can’t play on their OWN sites, so it would make sense to exchange an edge for an edge in the one they can, providing an even greater picture of a given slate. you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. the concurrence is interesting.

While some people have gone off the reservation with their theories and whatnot, I wouldn’t say that everyone has failed. I’ve seen many similar comments to my own from “regular guys” like me that enjoy DFS, have had some success, and want to keep playing but are troubled by incidents like this that suggest there could be some shady stuff going on.

Most, if not all of us, work hard for the money that we put into these sites and have helped build these sites into the monsters they are today. In return, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for more transparency into what happened here and what will be done to prevent this from reoccurring in the future. Sorry, but a generic press release from yesterday with no additional follow-up and changes to procedures is not the way to handle it from where I’m sitting. And that’s regardless of whether Ethan cheated or not. The possibility that this could’ve happened should be enough of an impetus for these sites to take measures to prevent this from happening again in the future before they’re forced to do so by the government.

Great way to sum up my thoughts on all of this! People keep talking about the ownership % being important/not important (it is) but I think a lot of concern goes to “the possibility” of a lot of other things, one of them being if somebody has access to the lineups of the top players. I doubt there was rampant “cheating” but I sure as heck think there is room for it to happen and the hubris of FD/DK thinking they could just let it blow over was the death blow.

DraftKings spokesperson Sabrina Macias told ESPN Chalk in an email.

DraftKings currently believes keeping ownership data hidden until rosters are locked creates a better overall experience for players.

“We have considered whether it would be a cool feature to have people be able to see trends and other overall player utilization info in real time as selections are being made,” Macias said. “But the reason we haven’t done that is because we don’t want to create an incentive to wait until the last minute to submit your roster. We also don’t want to create an incentive for people to submit dummy lineups to manipulate the data being presented to the public. So [it is] better to wait to provide info like this until after lineups are locked.”

She left off “except to our employees” at the end of the last sentence.

Federal prison. That’s what they do in the securities industry. They track associates, relatives, friends, etc.

    exactly.

if someone wants to risk selling data for federal prison time then so be it. but as of now they can sell lucrative data and the most extreme penalty they would receive is getting fired (prob with a nice package). penalties need to be put in place for POTENTIAL cases of corruption, at the very least so the temptation isn’t there.

I wonder if they both won big on the same dates or had the same lineups the same nights across both sites….

  • MikeMineo

I don’t think they are connected in any capacity, but it’s worth mentioning that two guys with similar access to official FD/DK data and who have high-proficiency technical abilities both had MASSIVE runs starting this summer, almost concurrently, in a sport as volatile as MLB.

I mean there’s nothing objective there to say corruption occurred, but anything concrete is worth mentioning.

and when I say MASSIVE runs, I mean moving up into the RG Top 50 in two months despite playing only on one site.

and now i believe it even more since my post keeps getting deleted off this board but here it is again

Please tell me im not the only one who thinks that the “Top ranked RG” users are playing for a smaller fee and kicking back the $$$ in %‘s to the sites.

Anything is possible, and having that many entries into contests just seems absurd and a waste EVERY NIGHT. Especially the way these guys are jumping in to defend players and these sites to the grave. Smells fishy….

or maybe im just salty ehafner and maxdalury win everynight

or maybe its just cause i always see them with multi teams in single entry contests….who knows

I just thought of another thing: Someone said earlier that it seems to be the higher ranked players making certain kinds of statements. I said maybe it’s because of experience…I also think that they understand how possible it is to win and make money without cheating because they’ve been doing it for a while. I’m sort of high ranked, in NBA anyway, and that’s what keeps going through my head – namely, what a huge over-reaction is taking place in this forum. I can’t understand it. I do think some good will eventually come from this as clearly there are issues that need to be addressed, but the paranoia in here is ridiculous.

I was nodding my head in agreement with you Chop, but then I remembered that the adults have tried to constructively get the ball rolling on this topic a few different times unsuccessfully.

I personally trust the site owners and the employees that I am familiar with, but I’ve always said that there is absolutely no way that someone from outside the industry could look at the situation and say it is acceptable for site employees to play on competitor’s sites.

If people hadn’t gotten crazy this topic was once again on the way towards being swept under the rug.

It is unfortunate that the media has painted a picture for the public that is far from reality but the sites had their opportunity to handle this situation properly years ago and chose not to.

    Nailed it!

the cheating by Dk employees on FD is obviously rampant. 10 million in winnings. Why isnt DK releasing FD employees winnings on DK.

The lack of strong denials and evidence that data has in fact been secure is pretty solid proof that they realize there was zero data security and it has been in fact an ego fueled frat boy culture with all value in your existence on the “inside” at DK or FD depending on you being a good player, all of the driven to do whatever it takes to be the biggest winner, biggest frat boy gambling winner of all the inside winners and these guy took 10 million dollars at least.

if you are still “waiting for info” or withholding judgement you are delusional. It is obviou and out in the open, and if you think these sites will be live all football season you are still delusional.

Mike, many of your posts are crossing a line.

You just casually said in a post “Two guys with similar access to FD/DK data.” You have no idea what access to data they have. According to DraftKings, Ethan had to submit a request to get the player ownership report for his article and could not access anything sensitive on his own.

It’s got the characters, the drama, the dark humor, the mud slinging, the facts, the lies…wait – that’s just this thread:)

Cal, I said they had similar access; this could mean they both had NO access or FULL access. Nothing I said was incorrect or damning. They are both employed under similar roles so it’s natural to think their capacity to obtain data would be similar, whether it’s no capacity or full capacity. AFAIK they are both high-level employees at a similar level.

Do they operate under similar roles? Yes. Do they both have high-quality technical expertise? Yes. Did they both go on massive runs throughout the summer in the most volatile sport, in near vicinity to one another? Yes. None of this is disputable, so I have the right to talk about POTENTIAL scenarios (like collaborative corruption) in regard to these objective points. I never said it as a fact. I said it as a possibility. Yes, I do believe that federal investigators will start here; that’s my opinion, and I made it obvious it was my opinion and not a fact.

I never inferred that they objectively had access to this data.

I even said there’s no objective proof to suggest corruption occurred. That’s more rationale than a TON of posts in this thread.

I really don’t know what the issue is.

I’m also just citing publicly available information that’s going to exist regardless of what RG does – https://dfsreport.com/6898/follow-up-to-draftkings-fanduel-mishaps/

I don’t see how discussing things that the media is also talking about is somehow crossing a line. I’m just stating facts and linking to sources; people should be able to infer as they please and share their opinion as well, as I’m doing. Is this not the point of a discussion forum?

You are REALLY not doing the community a favor by stifling legitimate and non-accusatory conversation. This is a time where every open dialogue should be considered. If we can’t do it on here then the national news media will gladly take the charge.

  • csandbizzle

I really don’t understand how it’s so difficult to state what kind of policies/safeguards were originally in place?

Releasing a statement on the Ethan incident is not going to quench the community asking for answers regarding a more broad set of circumstances.

Who had access and how did they gain access? What were the acceptable uses of this information when it was provided as deemed by the companies? What percentage of their employees play on competitors platforms, and what was the reasoning behind allowing this practice? Was the decision to reverse their stance on scripting directly influenced by employees or certain individuals?

I just don’t understand, the silence regarding the crux of the issue gives me a real bad feeling. Like either a portion of the company had no idea something of this nature was actually going on. Or it was well understood and it never came up that maybe this was in some way unethical and rather an angle to be shot.
