So DK tweeted out millionaire maker ownership here http://playbook.draftkings.com/nfl/millionaire-maker-percent-owned-week-3/ which as of 230pm still includes ownership data for games that have not yet started. IMO this is a big leak and should never happen. It also seems like something that your average analyst should probably not have access too, and able to tell his buddies who is owned and who the best players have. Hey did you know that CSURAM has Randall Cobb going late? Given that they can access the macro results it seems probable they can access specific users during and/or before contests start.

They definitely should no be sharing it publicly, if they’re going to do it just list the full rosters in the contest and call it a day.

A likely response after consulting with their legal and media teams and advisors (and looking at other similar scandals):
    1) Ethan no longer with DK (probably will have a behind the scenes financial package if they feel he really didn’t do anything wrong, but have to have a scapegoat). If he did do something wrong then he’ll be out without the package
    2) It’s going to be tough to lock down their data completely from nefarious activities but they will likely have to put some more infrastructure in place that encrypts all lineups (and other data). My understanding is that they have opened up their data for research for Bales book for instance. This will likely have to stop. Even if they open up the percentages there is a lot of other data available (winning players lineups for instance) that could be accessed.
    3) Insider trading and giving out information is an issue, so hopefully this can be stopped with #2. Saying employees can’t play on other sites is really a way to make you think they have done something but in reality they could just have friends play for them. It gets complicated if they hit a big win, but still worth it to them
    4) Even more commercials of the “every-man” winning.

The interesting thing here is if this data helps win, then it is a game of skill, even if the data required is not available to the general public. So, it does prove that data can help you win, and relates very similar to the stock market.

Another point is that Fanduel in some ways is as much at fault as DraftKings. They should explicitly exclude employees from ANY DFS contest site from participating.

Will be interested in hearing the responses, but they better come soon from FD and DK, otherwise NY Times and others are going to make this much harder for them.

Wonder if they lose that big exclusive deal with ESPN over all of this. The worldwide leader is reporting it that can’t be a good thing for Draftkings.

well then I apologize, i took that as “look at the OP you idiot” which surprised me.

my bad. Please share his response if possible

Gotcha. It’s a good question. There’s a narrative going now that Ethan was trying to DM this data to a friend and not trying to post it on behalf of DK. I’m hoping Colin’s response will stamp that out. My guess is that it was a Tweet from the DK Playbook twitter account linking to a DK Playbook article.

This whole thing is bananas. Didn’t even release the numbers until well after FD lock. Even if he had access to them beforehand how much does it really increase his EV in a field that size?

Everybody defending Ethan is a joke, he is single handedly going to bring down the industry, this stuff is making national headlines the government was already sticking their nose into things now it is goign to get very serious. Insider trading is illegal, what Ethan did is illegal, and for everyone saying it was just luck what are you smoking. I don’t care how good you are when you win that many times in such a short time and then we all find out you have been seeing peoples lineups and you know ownership percentages before lineups lock, that is not luck its not skill its straight up cheating. I hope everyone involved is fired, I wondered how so many employees constantly got first and made it to live finals, hope an investigation is conducted and all guilty parties put in jail. Thanks for ruining an amazing hobby!

If true, FanDuel should be implementing a CSV file download option for all of their contests really soon! If this doesn’t happen, they aren’t taking this seriously enough, watch out!

cheating is cheating you really think he has that many top 5 finishes in the last 3 months by skill, he freaking cheated and should be fired.

This is gaining so much traction and I don’t think people realize what their comments can do to negatively impact DFS as a whole. We need to settle down. It won’t be resolved immediately, but throwing out accusations is going to shut down this industry and I don’t want that. I want an even playing field every day, but I also want to be able to play DFS. If we keep going on the path we are on we won’t be able to play DFS.

I don’t think anybody here is saying that’s what Ethan did…we are concerned that that’s what he COULD have done and that it is seemingly possible for him to have done it.

There’s definitely lots of smoke, and the papers are piling on.

How does anybody know that the Ny Times didn’t investigate this further and have determined that he had the ownership data pre-lock???

No problem sorry I havent posted much I didnt know how to quote your post.

Disappointing that none of the so-called “big time players” are really chiming in. DraftCheat, TommyG, and a few others are tweeting about this… but many cannot speak freely as they are employed by FD or DK.

And I agree with many posters here, this story is about to become big-time news.

  • JimmyTango

The ESPN story is just a re-post of the AP story.

I certainly haven’t defended Ethan at any point in this thread. Just stating a fact; he hasn’t done anything illegal. People are going too far with these kinds of statements. This is a real person we’re talking about here. That can be lost on some folks when we’re having a discussion on the internet.

I agree…but also don’t think comments on a message board will be the reasons it hits the fan. It will be the lack of controls, lack of response, and employees posting information that should not be made public when contests still can be changed.

It also seems that there is a reason DK doesn’t allow their employees to play DK ANYMORE (which leads me to believe they were allowed at some point.)

I am pretty sure when DK first started they allowed employees to play on their site (2012 baseball I believe?). They quickly found out from backlash that the industry standard was that employees cannot play on the site for obvious reasons. They changed their policy.

As for why the sites would ban their employees from playing on other sites, that just seems like the obvious first step to try to help the bad perception caused by this situation. I kind of always accepted it as the norm, but as contests keep getting larger and larger, and their is a lot of money at stake, I can see why it may just be the best step to not allow it.

Just send the winner his million, no need to show his face on the freaking show.
