I recently chopped 2nd place winning 3300$ on a Monday night DK showdown lineup. I requested a payout via check for 2800$ I stated to them at this time that I deposited using gift cards (meaning I didnt use a bank issued debit card). They ignored my request and refunded 10 different gift cards over 1000 dollars. I have only one of these gift cards in my possession. After depositing the money over the years with giftcards I would throw them out never thinking I would need old visa vanilla gift cards with no money on them. Anyways, I contacted DK with my problem and was emailed a list of merchant codes and was told to recoup the money through Visa. Although I felt this was wrong I called visa vanilla and tried to do what Dk asked in order to get my money. VISA vanilla said they could not help me without the entire 16 digit number on the card or receipts. I chatted again with DK several times with no resolution. I received one call from an DK rep named Sean who instructed me further on calling visa which I again tried. I again responded to Dk which has now been ignoring mt emails and blocked me from chatting. I never swore at anyone and simply communicated my displeasure with their customer service and payout method. In essence my payout was sent into “Gift Card space”. Obviously frustrated I tried several times pleading to Dk to rescind the credit card payments and send me a check like I originally requested from the get go. In the last 20 years I’ve played with all the online sports books and have never had the problem I’ve encountered with DK regarding a payout and customer service. I cant even get anyone to respond to me. I’ve deposited tens of thousands of dollars to Dk and in my opinion should not have any problem receiving a small payout via check. Any advice on lawyers who could help me? DraftKings made an error in making a payout to old gift cards without my consent. I specifically told them I needed the entire payout via check. I have all the chat correspondences with dates, times, content etc. I’m just trying to get my money. How can a legal multi billion dollar company not provide on the phone customer service? How can a multi billion dollar company think it’s ok to refund gift cards without customer approval? I told them several times I only used the gift cards to fund my account. I have played for over 5 years and when I finally win I end up losing anyways.

I think it has to do with money laundering rules put in place a couple of years ago. It’s odd that they would refund to a really old card though.

Actually their terms of service specifically state that cash outs will be issued to the method in which you deposited which is why using prepaid gift cards is a horrible idea to start with if you ever plan on cashing out.

Your going to have better luck continuing to work with DK and Visa to get the issue resolved then you ever would by spending thousands on a lawyer as Dk has themselves covered by the terms and conditions that you agreed to by playing on the site.

Sorry, but you f’d this up. Using gift cards or trying to just is stupid in daily fantasy sports.

Surely common sense dictates that most people do not retain giftcards after they have been used.

They shouldn’t accept deposits on giftcards if there is no workaround for this.

There is a work around for this. The best way to do it is to contact DK support before you request a withdraw. The system is set up to automatically withdraw to your deposit method up to the amount of your deposit. After that mark is hit all profits go to the method you request. If you reach out to them in advance they can change where the funds go but like in this case once they send the money to Visa and it has left DK’s hands it becomes a lot more difficult for them to do anything.

Online Poker was the same way so it is something I learned many years ago but most people don’t actually read terms and conditions on anything which creates unfortunate situations like this. Hopefully the OP can get the situation resolved and get his money back without too much further hassle.

The reason sites do this is there is 0 fees to issue a “refund” which is essentially what they are doing when you withdraw funds you deposited. Straight transaction fees through credit cards and PayPal ran in the 2-4% so it is a massive savings to be able to refund vs. creating a new transaction. The alternative which some offshore sports books do is to just charge a 3 to 5% fee to withdraw which passes the cost off to the user but allows much more flexibility.

This has nothing to do with it- Money is money-

Where the OP went wrong is BEFORE he requests a withdrawal all he had to do was send DK a quick message via Twitter DM and request to “please remove all the cards associated with my account”. Then BOOM 10 minutes later they clear all your cards and you can request your withdrawal via paypal or check. I do it all the time- Takes 5 minutes of using your brain-..

I deposit on Visa but have never received funds on Visa it is always a cheque. I have never understood why it doesnt go to my Visa and I have gotten no explanation for that. It has never been a problem I always get my funds but it shows how their policy of automatically going to the last deposit method doesnt really hold water. I mean I would have worked with DK before withdrawing if I had used that many old gift cards tho but they should make it right.

Right but returning money to multiple (10) gift cards for 1000 dollars is crazy

  • Mikec2980

Why. Debit cards get hacked all the time. Using gift cards seemed safe to me

  • Mikec2980

Ya well I never knew this and just asked for my payout via check….no idea about clearing cards or any of that and in my opinion should have been able to speak with someone rather

  • ajs1281

Yeah, I am with squid here. Ive done this before. Not sure what you want DK to do here. When you go to withdraw it tells you how you will be getting it. (100 on card ending 1234, 75 on card ending 2345, 150 to paypal, etc) then asking how you want to get the profits where I guess you chose check. But on that screen it states pretty clearly something like “If you dont have access to these cards, please contact support prior to submitting”. I send a message in the support section of the app and it is done in 30 minutes usually. As for the returning 1k to 10 gift cards being crazy, DK Doesn’t know if it is a gift card, a debit card or a credit card. They process a visa transaction and refund to those cards first per policy that is clearly stated before submitting.

Edit to add, this is what I see….I dont know how much clearer you want them to make it for you

    @ajs1281-

Exactly! All of this is true- and DK support via a twitter DM is exceptional- I sent them a message to clear all cards and within 20 minutes it was done. They have warnings and verbiage all of their site about where the money gets distributed first if you do not choose to clear all your cards.

if they have all the gift card numbers on file, is it possible to redeposit the money on all of them to your dk. then clear the cards and just play the money in your account? you probably couldn’t wd right away but probably could after you have had 1000 in play over the next few weeks/months or whatever?

I think this is bad advice. Seems like the kind of things DK specifically doesnt want people to do – Depositing strictly to withdraw via a different method. Do not do this OP.

well right, i am just trying to think of a last ditch option better than the $1k just being lost into credit card space. hence why i said you couldn’t just deposit it and rewithdraw instantly, but if you played it again, preferably in safer cash games, there would be a decent chance to at least recoup a portion of it if you kept track of each day of play until you went through 1000.

Fair enough but he is on DKs radar now and you dont want to do anything to put your account at risk specially if there are funds in there.

  • joephoto

Do people use gift cards as a way to launder money ?
Good Luck clearing this up with the gift card companies. They charge a fee to buy them. Do they charge a fee for re-crediting them?

true. would definately ask a live representative if this would be a viable work around to the problem and screenshot any answers so they know you are not trying to pull anything fishy. maybe even post in the rg dk thread to see if their rep has a suggestion to fix.

I think the OP has already stated that DK has instructed them to work with Visa to get the money from the cards transferred to something he has access to. There is a 0% chance your going to get DK to agree that a money laundering type activity would be a suitable work around that he should go for. All DFS sites take that type of activity very seriously as they should.

Like Squid stated, have them clear the gift cards always. Have used them numerous times and have always had winnings transferred into my paypal. Customer service for DK has been first rate for me when needed.
