      2019 DraftKings FFWC Finalist

Today DraftKings took a huge step forward in clarifying what type of play is allowed/not allowed.

Check out the Community Guidelines page here, complete with a clear design and examples.

I had a call with DK on this just a couple of hours ago. They mentioned this is phase one of this page and they are open to adding to it as new situations arise. The thing that really stood out to me here is Lineup Selling. I did not see that one coming. With lineup selling being such a public endeavor it will also be one of the easiest ones to enforce. I think we’ll see that market dry up quickly, especially if Fanduel follows suit. I asked if they could give more clarity and communication on specific punishments – they feel that would violate their privacy policy, so we probably won’t be seeing such announcements unless they change their policy. This forum will remain a place to bring potential issues to light, but there is also a direct department to report suspected abuse to now: GameIntegrity@DraftKings.com

Let’s have a constructive conversation about these here. What do you think? Is there anything that should be added or clarified?

Kudos to DraftKings for making this effort.

I like it but will they enforce it is the question. Hopefully they do. The lineup selling stands out.

  • Grizzlers

I don’t see how any of that can truly be enforced. Even with the bought lineups how can they prove you are playing one? What right would they have to take down a website that sells lineups? Then again I guess they have the right to govern who isn’t allowed to participate on their site so genuine proof isn’t required. All I want is for live scoring to be accurate and not disappear like it does with the CFL games lately. It is nice to see them making the effort.

I think we’ll see lineup selling enforced quickly because it’s much easier to prove.

Good on them if they can Police it?

look at cash games with 300 guys with
    same lineup

Good idea to put a little fear into the lineup sellers, but a majority of the reporting would just be accusations against them. This would have to be a universal DFS rule/law to really work, not just DK.

  • tvsfrink

What can they possibly do about the lineup sellers? Send them a mean tweet?

I’m all in favor of these guidelines but yeah I don’t see how it’s terribly enforceable. Would love to be wrong.

  • AWoo

Also, sort of hard to enforce imo on smaller slates like 2 to 4 games because sites have very loose or tighter pricing lead to the same core players and maybe even the same lineups.

  • CBassXU

Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but couldn’t lineup sellers just create an optimizer to be used instead? Obviously this would take more work for them vs. sending an e-mail or whatever they do now but still an easy to see loophole.

For example, in CBB last year the two “estelas” running the same lineups night in and night out would still be allowed to do the same because they were just using the same optimizer, not technically sharing lineups.

As others said, I like the concept but it seems tough to enforce and I get why they left the optimizer loophole in there but I think that almost defeats the purpose…

    This is great to here.
After the responses I’ve gotten from FanDuel, which amount to, “Deal with it”, I’m just happy someone is admitting that the lineup selling is a potential issue and it can negatively effect the long term growth of DFS.

I honestly think just establishing that it is not allowed and using a lineup provider can result in suspensions/bans (whatever) will deter a good portion of it. It’s like the alarm stickers on your window even if you don’t have the alarm.

Also, it’s not like many of these people are being secretive about it. Heck, on FanDuel during the NHL/NBA season many of the people using purchased lineups had an avatar of the site they purchased it from.

I’ll be interested to see how this develops and it could get me to play more cash games (personally the cash games is where it really seemed to be an issue, although admittedly I’ve seen it much more on FD).

  • tooltime

I know many people who would come back or sign up to dk and fd if lineup selling was handled. It has giving the sites a very rep.

I think I’m a little more concerned about over-enforcement and false accusations. While it’s great they’re being more aggressive against illegal/unethical activities, do legitimate players have to be concerned about having funds wrongfully frozen?

  • Travisbecker

I haven’t read the new guidelines yet. I suppose they could go after the lineup sellers themselves with the argument “using our salary data for the purpose of reselling optimal lineups to others violates our terms & conditions.”

Isn’t #4 on the green “acceptable” side the same thing as #3 on the red “unacceptable” side? The only difference is that the red example uses maximum entries; so in essence, a group of people could do 1 less than the max and then fall within the guidelines?

  • Todfrompa

So are they saying that two people can’t make a lineup together?

  • deactivated84892

Soooooo much gray area here. I know it’s being made with good intentions so hopefully the edges aren’t that rough.

Raw text that came out offers some rough interpretation.

  • regns08

What does pooling entry fees mean? If I want to play the thunderdome and sell some action to my friends can I do that?

  • depstein1985

I feel like getting rid of the Nexus, Radar, etc. deal should be pretty straightforward.

For NHL lineup selling is a major issue, granted most the lineups being sold suck.

Maybe they need a bit of clarification stating having a 3rd party enter lineups to go over the max.

If the max is 100 and you enter 99, and have a 3rd party enter 20 more that would still be breaking the rule.

    Yes, which seems silly.

  • haze28

I think it is a giant step in the right direction. This benefits recreational players like me and I am not worried about being falsely accused at all.

  • shadygr8

love this from DK , excellent move. i dont think they will ban ppl randomly when they have doubts. they will probably monitor repeat offenders and drop the hammer

  • mccoolio

Who is to say DK can’t get in the pockets of some of these sellers and get data for who subscribes to those types of services and match it up with their own to ban the offenders? This is good news.

  • Grizzlers

I think its interesting that they aren’t willing to address the “scripting issue”. To me thats where the higher rollers have the advantage over the casual player. Also would love some data on what percentage of entries were only one or two or say fewer than 10 and the percentage that were 50% or more of max as an example. Would also love for them to bring back the number of entry beside the name on the leader board without having to click on them. I appreciate the 3 entry max GPPs at DK.

  • bzsports4

I mean if it makes other people feel better then I guess it is fine, but if people want to share lineups its fine by me. I would rather have to beat 1 lineup than dozens of lineups, especially in GPPs.
