I’m trying to add a solver constraint that will force the solver to select players from a minimum or maximum number of teams. For example, on some NBA slates I would want the solver to select players from at least 6 teams. Anyone have any idea on how to do this? I’ve tried various formulas but Excel keeps giving me the Non-Linear message, and the Non-Linear solver doesn’t work for me.

I’ve played with this for a number of years. As best I can tell, there is no way to select a minimum or maximum number of teams. I have seemingly tried every formula and get the same error message. If someone has figured it out, I’d love to hear how.

Instead, I have “gotten around this” by tracking the number of players selected from any one team. In your example, if you sent a constraint that prevents your solver from selecting more than 2 players from a single team, you will essentially get a roster that consists of players from a diverse number of different teams. It doesn’t always work out perfectly, but it gets me close.

You are much better off to upload your projections and use lineupHQ. It’s so much easier and a much better lineup builder then excel will ever be.

I agree with Jvanspro. LIneupHQ is a great tool.

With that being said, I primarily use solver for the smaller sites that LineupHQ doesn’t support.

Thanks for the replies… STV, the max player per team is a decent workaround, but I often end up with 4-5 teams when I want 6 or 7 teams. The Lineup HQ seems nice, but I don’t feel like paying that much for the stack/premium version. The minimum team constraint I’ve tried has sort of worked by just doing a lookup of the team and the binary column, but it doesn’t always provide the highest projected lineup. I’ll just keep plugging away at it.

Just so you know, you can come up with your own stacks and build then into the rules on LineupHQ and that is free. The paid version is quicker but personally I do just fine building stacks in HQ by setting parameters. Hope this helps you out.
