    Thank you FanDuel!

    https://newsroom.fanduel.com/2016/04/21/mlb-scoring-announcement/

FanDuel is announcing that we will be implementing a new MLB scoring system on Wednesday, April 27th. We are announcing this in advance, as you may have grown accustomed to our current MLB scoring system, and can begin thinking about our new changes.

    Specifically:

RBIs will now be worth 3.5 points
    – Runs will now be worth 3.2 points

As we are consistently trying to give users the best experience, we wanted to address a complaint, which was the negative points in MLB scoring. We eliminated negative points and our analytics team has determined that this additional change to scoring will result in substantially fewer ties than any of our previous MLB scoring systems, which results in a better experience for all of our users.

Thank you for your support and feedback.

We’ve got a story up that gives a cursory look at how the changes will affect ties as well as the other ramifications: https://rotogrinders.com/articles/fanduel-brings-back-fractional-mlb-scoring-1275827

I’m quite certain this is the best news I’ll receive all day…which is kinda sad, but I’m OK with that.

Runs and RBI were already overvalued, now even more so. On DK the ratio of single to RBI is 1.50, and on FD it will be 0.86. So stacking is even more necessary, which imo is not nearly as fun. I wish they had just brought back negative points for outs. I still do not understand why people don’t like that – it’s part of the game. But I suppose they have to cater to what the casual fan wants.

    So who exactly doesn’t like negative scoring?because I haven’t heard a soul say they didn’t like it.and fractions.maybe I have blinders on.personally last year’s scoring>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • deactivated84892

yeah, Now that I’ve gotten over the initial excitement of them introducing fractional scoring to dim down ties. I think they picked the 2 worst categories to fractionize.

Definitely puts more weight on stacking. They should have amended hits (singles 3.2, doubles 6.5 etc). A neutral effect on lineup construction.

    We did it….. Oh yeah..

I would have honestly preferred ties to this. If they moved runs and RBIs to 3.1, I could handle it. But these two are massive changes. The issue was resolving ties, and they choose perhaps the worst way to do it.

  • RTLONG

This company is a complete joke. They can’t do anything right. Can’t get basic tax forms out on time. Can’t play in their own state if they are based out of. Change scoring for no reason and after they get complaints they make it even worse. No late swap…..FanDuel is an epic fail, it’s too bad because I loved playing there in the past.

This will help with ties but now a grand salami is worth 29.2. Who did they listen to this time? The scoring was always home run dependant, now it’s even worse.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I’m happy with this. Ties were a problem and they addressed that. The scoring isn’t perfect, but at least it is no longer broken (as it was with all those ties at the cashline).

Making a dubsmash would definitely turn that frown upside down!

I don’t think it’s perfect, or even the best change they could’ve made, but it should get rid of ties, so there’s that.

In the article mentioned above, we looked at last night’s Grand Slam (small sample, admittedly) and the effect wasn’t quite as dramatic as I would’ve guessed. The effect on devaluing pitching looks like it will be nominal, while overall scores for the top 25 in last night’s tournament were boosted between 4-7 points (or between 2-3 percent of the overall point total).

That said, I don’t think there’s any getting around the added benefit to stacking now. We just looked at one stack, Santana-Braun-Lucroy-Carter, and the effect of the new scoring would’ve boosted their output by about five percent, and it’s easy to see how it will be higher on some slates.

Pure speculation, but I think this is a stop-gap measure (and obviously a needed one). Personally, I’d like to see them tweak it in the offseason to award/penalize at least two of the “three true outcomes.” Home runs are already plenty valuable, but deducting hitters for Ks and pitchers for walks would be a nice modification, imo.

I don’t know, though. Maybe negative points are just a non-starter now.

Babies gonna cry. Nice job by FD solving the problem of ties in an easy and minimally noticeable way.

  • Gfry3

In reference to negative points, I personally hated missing out on cash because my guy went 0-4 while some other player didn’t know player X was scratched or played a guy in a rain delay and got a 0. You can go 0-4 with 3 rockets and a robbed HR and get -1 while the guy who doesn’t look at his lineup played a bench guy and go 0, to me that is not the right way to attack it. 0fer a game doesn’t mean you necessarily had a bad game, could just be a combination of bad luck and/or late game matchups whatever the case may be.

This is for batters only, understand negative for pitchers for sure.

@bholloway Unfortunately I would not think they will go back to negative points. I think if you are costing your team outs you should be penalized but the majority of players apparently don’t see it that way – fine.

@tgowen I did not see any babies crying – perhaps you are reading a different thread? This change might be easy but it is hardly ‘minimally noticeable’ as it will affect strategy quite a bit. Making a shortsighted reactionary change in the middle of the season is not what I would describe as a ‘nice job’.

I think they should have just lived with the current system (ties and all) for 2016 and reevaluated in the offseason. The only reason to change from FD’s perspective should be if their handle has markedly decreased, AND they think that making this change will ameliorate that.

  • crazypaul

The easiest way to fix this would have been to give negative points to the only 2 outs worth giving negative points to: Strikeouts & GIDP.

However, I am fine with this fix. The ties were a really ridiculous.

It could have been better. But it fixes the main problem, so I’m okay with it.

I’m fine with it. FD could have announced they were giving everyone 50$ and people would still bitch it wasn’t enough.

Don’t like this because if someone goes 0-for-4, you’re better off rostering someone that doesn’t even play. That doesn’t make any sense.

  • ComicFx

It’s good FD is trying to fix the problem they created when they fixed something that wasn’t broken. Game design is very hard, I’m going to let everyone else play there this season while FD figures out what it wants to do and everyone figures out if its a good or bad game. No need to risk my money doing that. GL
