Woke up to this unfortunate gem: http://www.legalsportsreport.com/9130/fanduel-draftkings-reach-ny-settlement

Thoughts with you guys in New York.

    Statement from FanDuel

FanDuel made the following statement via a company spokesperson:
“We are announcing that as of today, FanDuel will cease offering paid contests in the state of New York per the terms of a settlement reached with the Attorney General on certain aspects of the ongoing litigation.

New York is a critical state for FanDuel. FanDuel is headquartered in Manhattan, where we employ more than 170 young smart, passionate fans who are committed to innovating and providing the best fantasy experience possible. We are proud to be one of New York’s largest startup companies, and while it is disheartening for us to restrict access to paid contests in our home state, we believe this is in the best interest of our company, the fantasy industry and our players while we continue to pursue legal clarity in New York.”

    Statement from DraftKings:

DraftKings Statement Regarding The Settlement with The New York Attorney General

“Effective today, as part of a settlement reached with the Attorney General’s office, DraftKings will stop offering paid daily fantasy sports contests in New York State.

We are an industry leader in technology, innovation and consumer protections, and we are grateful to the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who have enjoyed playing fantasy sports on DraftKings for the last 4 years. We will continue to work with state lawmakers to enact fantasy sports legislation so that New Yorkers can play the fantasy games they love.”

MODERATION NOTE: Now more than ever, we all need our voice to be heard. Make Your Voice heard here. Please stay on topic in this thread, we understand people are mad and/or frustrated.

Very depressed NYC DFS player here, spent the last 48 hours trying to figure out ‘work-arounds’ to these state restrictions on DFS-sites, but I have now become resigned to the fact that as long as I’m physically in NY I cannot play. The Geocomply/Solus geolocation software on these sites is very advanced. Guess I’ll leave a lil cash in my account for when I go out-of-state.

Honestly, this is such BS!!! So our NY AG is spending millions of taxpayers money on ongoing litigation to bring down DK and FD, as if this is a top issue threatening NY’ers. Obviously, we are not that stupid, like everything in politics its all about the $$$. During AG Schneiderman’s campaign to office he took over $150K at the least from gambling interests, people with ties to NY Casinos and Racetracks. This play by the AG is motivated to protect these campaign investors and to make a name for himself by being “tough on gambling”. Meanwhile he and his political snakes have no problem with ongoing corruption within their own offices and are quick to take $$$ from big casinos. This is why Americans hate the political system. Sorry had to vent……arrgghhh!!!!

I’m right here with ya man. Completely at a loss, and highly disappointed. Something I spend a couple hours doing daily now completely gone right at the end of CBB and before the start of MLB (probably my 2 favs along with CFB). When FD suspended play a few months back when this all first became a thing I moved over to DK since it was still operating. Became much more fond of DK after using it and getting used to it, and now it is my preferred site. Hoping something similar can happen here with another site. So far from my understanding Yahoo and Draftpot have also shut down but I emailed FantasyAces and was told they are still looking into it and are at least open in NY now for the time being. I have been asking around on RG here where others think the best option to play is and basically Im being told that all other “legit” sites will follow suit and shut down. But Aces is open for business still currently and I plan on signing up there for MLB in hopes hat it is still open then.

Question for fellow New Yorkers, what is the best way to get to New Jersey from Jamaica station? And approximately how long would it take.

  • kellykip

In addition, until I hear proof to the contrary, I suspect that we still will not be able to deposit

Take the LIRR to Penn Station and then walk 1 avenue block over to the Path at 33rd st and take it to the first stop in NJ which is Pavonia/Newport There is a small plaza when you get off the PATH at Pavonia/Newport and a bar/restaurant right across Washington Street. There is also the Newport Mall there where sales tax is only 3% (some kind of NJ development zone).

Or stay on for one more stop and get off the PATH in Hoboken, there you could walk to a coffee shop or bar or even sit in the train station waiting room.

To be honest I think you are looking at 45 minutes to an hour from Jamaica to New Jersey.

If you wanted to avoid the walk to the PATH then you could switch from LIRR to a New Jersey Transit train. first stop in NJ would be Newark. Again a matter of timing of the trains and I would think 45 minutes to an hour this way as well.

Didn’t know you can’t deposit even if you leave New York, that’s huge. Anyway does anyone know how to get around that. I have family that lives in jersey. Can I just set up a new account and use their address? Or would I have to use a bank in jersey because I use PayPal and it takes from my bank in NY. Hopefully someone who has done extensive research on this can answer. Thank you

Is it feasible to have a friend in another state open an account, have him enter contests daily from that state, and edit the lineups by accessing “his”(your out of state) account?

best bet to get to NJ quick is to take the Path train from lower Manhattan to Hoboken/Jersey City.

I understand if you live in NY and enter your games in let’s say CT / NJ early in the day, are you able to modify lineups later in NY?

DK says yes, people in this thread say they have done this successfully. It’s all in the thread buddy.

Schneiderman’s an attention seeker, he wants national headlines. He took Donald Trump to court over trump university, he’s investigating Bruce Springsteen ticket sales on ebay (not 100% sure for what, maybe fake tickets I guess), investigating t-mobile for false advertising, and the bs investigation on dk, fd. Maybe his claims are legit (considering how he knows nothing about daily fantasy and just wants to take the industry down i doubt it)but its funny how everything he goes after will get him national headlines, and use taxpayer money.
Schneiderman didn’t have to act this way, fd, dk, and legislation were working together on a compromise that would allow them to continue to operate without any temporary shutdowns.

Not to sound like beating an old drum but don’t figure out a way around their software, if you win big you won’t be paid because it’s a violation of the tos, and if you lose they will still take your money. It sucks I know, it’s easy for someone lie me to say that because I live 5 minutes from the ny border, but if these sites are back up and running it will suck even more if your perminatlly banned.

Where are you getting this information that you can’t deposit out of state?

  • theoddsmaker

I don’t live in NY, so I’m not asking for personal reasons just trying to figure out how it makes sense that you can go to NJ for example, put in a team, then edit in NY. What is to prevent people from just having a buddy who lives in a legal state enter contests under your account and then you just edit them?

Just seems silly how ridiculous that it would be possible to do something like that to me, but I bet that happens. On a separate note, this is the sort of thing(s) regulation should be able to prevent along with making sure DFS sites separate player funds. I really think regulation should allow employees to start playing on other sites at least. I don’t really see an issue with that as long as there is 3rd party oversight, seems silly if that is a long-term solution.

The main takeaway is that the government shouldn’t be banning DFS as a result of “looking after us” it should be making it legal/regulated to protect our consumer rights. This country is destroying itself internally by shutting down what used to make it great. You should have the right to do what you want with your money and businesses shouldn’t have to be fighting such an uphill battle to thrive in our economy, as long as we regulate and make it legit this will only help our economy which needs all the help we can get.

There’s nothing stoping people from doing that, but it is against the terms of service on dk, fd to have someone else log into your account even if you give them permission. I doubt it’s enforced but I bet with the new software they have they could find out.

For example, I have family in Kentucky ( I would not do this, I live 5 minute from ny border and would not risk it) I could have my brother in law enter contests for me and then edit them at home but fd, and dk would see its not possible to be in Kentucky enter contest and then 15 minutes later edit them in ny. I guess say if you live in the city and have family in jersey just a few minutes away there would be no possible way to figure that.

To me I always say its not worth it to break the terms, because if you win big you may not get paid and if you lose they will still take your money.

I agree that there needs to be regulation, but too much regulation is a bad thing too. The proposed bill right now in ny is for the companies in dfs to pay a one time 500,000 fee to run dfs in ny, charge the companies 15% Tax on all entry fees, and ban college dfs ( ban horse racing dfs but I never seen horse racing dfs).

I don’t know if these smaller sites will be able to run in ny. I just joined fantasy aces and love it, it’s something different that I’m enjoying right now. It would depend how worth it is from a business standpoint for a smaller site like fantasy aces to run in ny, and they will lose all college football income. Plus I don’t know if the rake would go up, and I’m someone who loves college football and would be highly upset if I couldn’t play it anymore. At the very least I hope college sports stay legal in other states but I doubt it.

I’m a NY resident but luckily I live about 10 minutes from the NJ border. I’m currently sitting in a Starbucks in NJ seeing how everything works.

There seems to be no problems doing anything on draftkings however the only problem I have found is with FD. On FD you CANNOT deposit via Paypal. On the paypal menu screen you have to chose what state you are depositing from and once you click New York the buttons are blocked. I clicked on the CC deposit link and used my Paypal debit card which essentially is the same thing as it just withdraws the money from my PayPal anyways. The transaction went through without any problems and now I am good to go.

  • dramos77

How are you guys able to edit lineups once back across borders. I keep getting the restricted page when i click on my lineup to edit it.

Yahoo is on the lawsuit, they were added a few weeks after fd, dk were on it, and yahoo pulled out of ny a day after dk, fd did. Im playing on fantasy aces at the moment and the said as of right now their monitoring the situation and still running games in ny. I live in Buffalo too, it doesn’t take me long to get the rainbow bridge, I’m ready to just park my car near the bridge and start walking over the bridge everyday if I have to(customs is a pain in the ass in car ometimes). It’s only a half mile and I need the exercise, I used to be in great shape because I played junior college baseball, but now I’m in dad mode and definitely out of shape, so it’s a win win for me because I want the exercise.

Just got an email from Fanduel about registering to vote in the April 19th primary. “While fantasy sports will NOT be on the ballot, your politicians in Albany need to know that your voice will be heard.”
