Woke up to this unfortunate gem: http://www.legalsportsreport.com/9130/fanduel-draftkings-reach-ny-settlement

Thoughts with you guys in New York.

    Statement from FanDuel

FanDuel made the following statement via a company spokesperson:
“We are announcing that as of today, FanDuel will cease offering paid contests in the state of New York per the terms of a settlement reached with the Attorney General on certain aspects of the ongoing litigation.

New York is a critical state for FanDuel. FanDuel is headquartered in Manhattan, where we employ more than 170 young smart, passionate fans who are committed to innovating and providing the best fantasy experience possible. We are proud to be one of New York’s largest startup companies, and while it is disheartening for us to restrict access to paid contests in our home state, we believe this is in the best interest of our company, the fantasy industry and our players while we continue to pursue legal clarity in New York.”

    Statement from DraftKings:

DraftKings Statement Regarding The Settlement with The New York Attorney General

“Effective today, as part of a settlement reached with the Attorney General’s office, DraftKings will stop offering paid daily fantasy sports contests in New York State.

We are an industry leader in technology, innovation and consumer protections, and we are grateful to the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who have enjoyed playing fantasy sports on DraftKings for the last 4 years. We will continue to work with state lawmakers to enact fantasy sports legislation so that New Yorkers can play the fantasy games they love.”

The NYS Bill A8588 is in committee and was submitted in December 2, 2015

I wouldn’t hold your breath awaiting its passage. The State congress calendar does not show any legislative days from now till end of session in June. The State has been content to disapprove casino approvals since the very inception of Atlantic City, albeit a few crappy Indian casinos in Buffalo and surrounding area.

As for entering out of State. If I was a winner of substantial prize I would look to pay my taxes in the State where my winning (ie employmet) occurred. Very much like a professional athlete that NYS taxes when playing a game in NYS.

Hey I work at those “crappy” casinos haha.

I tried my friend in Delaware and it said he was in a restricted zone
But deleware is good state so I’m confused why it didn’t work

  • TheKris

I don’t see how they could. It should be the same as if you were visiting your friend in Delaware and using his laptop. Strange that it doesn’t work.

I went over the bridge into NJ had a cup of coffee got gas set a few lineups took me 20 mins that will be my modus operandi until they fix this BS. Another thing I will do is make it My business to vote against the AG in the next election in NYS. That should be every NY players pack we should make to keep guys like Schniederman from dictating what we do with our free time as long no one is getting hurt. As far as My lineups it is not an issue I did the same thing yesterday and got paid without incident. So as long as your out of state you can play No problem…

Has anyone tried entering the Freerolls? I can’t even do that and the Free games are supposed to be allowed according to the agreement.

So a question, I’m from buffalo, I go to Canada 3 days every week in the summer. I can enter contests (even if legal in ny by that time) in Canada and since they don’t pay taxes on prizes I wouldn’t have to pay taxes on contests I entered there?

I hear what your saying and agree with you, but I don’t think I could be exempt from paying taxes because Im a ny resident who plays in Canada. Worth asking thou

I just spoke with DK support. I asked: “If I enter a lineup in New Jersey, then travel to New York later that day, can I edit that lineup from New York?”

    The response was positive.

    “Hi Max,

Yes, you may edit a lineup in New York, however you cannot enter a paid contest from New York.

    Thank you,

    Adam D”

Weird. Doesn’t let me enter free roll on FD. Are there free rolls on DK? I can’t find any.

I tried opening one on DK earlier just because there’s a few split stats I like to look at there for reference while drafting and it wouldn’t let me get passed the account restricted page.

Going to use this time to take a break from DFS for a while, may stop for good. TBH, while at first distraught, have discovered that I’m actually happier/less stressed out when NOT playing DFS, haha (like during the NBA ASB). More time with the girlfriend, family + doing other things I’ve enjoyed doing (like snowboarding, etc). The amount of physical time I spent on DFS doesn’t even compare to the emotional/mental time investment that goes into lineup research and I failed to notice the magnitude of either until I took that DFS break.

So, rather than immediately jumping to other DFS/casino/gambling related pursuits, I encourage you all to step outside of that box for a little bit. May be surprised at what you find about yourself.

    Good luck all.

I can tell you what people will find out about themselves. It’s a 9 letter word called addiction. The sad part is you can tell plenty of people are in serious denial.

How can other sites operate in New York, but FD and DK can’t?

Dude, the rules work like this: You can Deposit or enter a contest as long as the device isn’t physically in NY state. On Fanduel you can then edit the entry in any state, on DK I’m not sure the editing rules. Once a contest ends, no matter where the physical device or your address is, you can withdraw funds from the site.
