I am sure this topic has been discussed before but I don’t play too many large prize pool tournaments. I had won some satellite entries into the recent $6 entry $300k MLB Supreme Squeeze tournament. As these tournaments roll out each day, I hadn’t seen the payout structure until the day of the tournament but it was outrageously top heavy in the payout:

    1st- $100,000 (33%)
    2nd- $20,000 (6%)
    3rd- $10,000 (3%)

Top 3 places = 43% of the total prize pool

The recently released week 1 NFL tournaments are terrible as well:

$9 entry $2.3 million Thursday Million ($250k 1st TD Bonus) – $2,550,000 total prize pool

    1st- $1,000,000 (39%)
    2nd- $100,000 (4%)
    3rd- $50,000 (2%)

Top 3 places = 45% of the total prize pool (If you take out the TD bonus and operate with a $2.3 million total prize pool, these payouts are even higher with 43% going to 1st place)

$9 entry $3.5 million Sunday Million

    1st- $1,000,000 (28%)
    2nd- $200,000 (6%)
    3rd- $100,000 (3%)

Top 3 places = 37% of the total prize pool

Compare this with today’s $5.55 entry $75k MLB Squeeze:

    1st- $10,000 (13%)
    2nd- $5,000 (7%)
    3rd- $3,000 (4%)

These daily tournament payouts vary somewhat with anywhere between 10%-17% paid out to first place, but they are nowhere near the top heavy payouts on these mega-tournaments. I get that there is marketing appeal to these high dollar payouts, but it makes them almost unplayable. In addition, for the MLB tournaments, we don’t see them until the day before, so I played a bunch of satellites for the weeks leading up and had no idea how lopsided the prize pool ended up being. I wanted to get some money in one of these larger tournaments just to have a day to sweat some larger dollar amounts and the satellites were a cost effective way to achieve this, but finding out how bad the payouts were for anything but the top 10 was disappointing. I had started to work on some Week 1 NFL satellites but seeing how bad the payouts are, I am not sure that is worth the investment….

This is what attracts the non serious player. Plus all the talk about ecosystems is bull. These companies arent intrested in churn. They worried about that when rake was lower and competition was higher. Now the ultimate priority of these big two companies is to have you deposit over and over again. Getting it while they can making up for the early years. Got to pay these investors off and the only way to do it is the way they are doing it now.

Yes it’s been discussed many times for many years. So at this point unless you are the most optimistic person in the world, nothing is ever going to change. But it doesnt hurt to keep bringing it up and making people aware. There should be NO contests offered that have the prize pools that pay 43% of the entire prizepool to the top 3 places. You’re right. It’s completely outrageous. The one with 37% to the top 3 is better, but not by much. Thankfully there are some other options available, albeit with much small prize pools.

I imagine the only way this will change is if people dont play in these contests. But good luck with that or organizing any type of group effort to combat this. What would really be nice is once, just once, is to have one of these multi-million dollar weekly prize pool tournaments pay out with a reasonable prize payout structure.

With all that being said, I myself the first week of NFL will probably be throwing one or two entries into one of these poorly structured massive GPP’s as for me anyway, if you’re going to do it out of any week of the NFL season, it would make sense to enter one of these the very 1st week. The combination of the most bad DFS NFL players during any NFL week, inefficiencies in pricing along with the ability to get the most low owned players outperforming their prices makes it the best week to enter one of these types of contests IMO.

I’ll definitely be checking it out. I’m moving back to a state that allows DFS later this week, so I am very much looking forward to getting back into DFS after not playing for 2 years. And with a relatively low bankroll, I have to really pick and choose the best contests for myself. So thanks…will be interested to see the payout structure.

Top 20% paid, 2x mincash, 10% to first, and lots of single entry options as well. Oh, and a Million dollar contest. And no rake.
