    Hello Grinders,

It is almost that wonderful time of the year again….the NCAA Tournament/March Madness is only 9 days away.

I am posting this early this year as last year I got a good response (92 total entries not including rebuys) and I wanted to start collecting a list of entries, email addresses for distribution of picks, and funds via PayPal if you are inclined to start sending them before next week. This pool is open to anyone but there may become a point where I need to cap the total entries as it is very time consuming trying to collect everyone’s picks each day. I doubt I do this though but try to get your interest/fees in early if possible.

This is probably the most fun/interesting pool I have ever done. I think those that participated last year would likely agree as I’ve already been asked by many people if I was running it again. The whole premise came from an article Bill Simmons posted several years ago. Here is the article (I miss Grantland): http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-official-grantland-march-madness-knockout-pool/ . Basically the idea is that you pick 2 straight up winners Thursday of the tournament, 2 straight up winners Friday, 1 straight up winner Saturday, 1 straight up winner Sunday, and then 1 straight up winner every day after that. You cannot use the same team twice throughout the tournament. Pretty simple.

If you lose on Thursday, you CAN rebuy on Friday but you have to pick 4 straight up winners. If you lose on Friday, you can buy back Saturday but you have to pick 5 straight up winners. If you lose on Saturday, you can buy back Sunday but you have to pick 6 straight up winners. No buy backs after that. If you lose or choose not to re-buy and you are eliminated. Obviously you still cannot pick a team more than once throughout the tournament.

The cost of the pool will be $30 per entry this year. 3 max entries per person. To buy back in is also $30. Buy back funds will need to be sent prior to the tip off the following day. The payouts will likely be top 2, but as anyone knows that played last year, ties can certainly happen. For those that did not play last year, we ended with a 13 way tie I believe. That being said, we did have one person free rolling in the Final with Wisconsin. A lot of people had their championship pick eliminated when Kentucky lost. Also, last year had a lot of chalk winners without a ton of upsets. I considered making changes to the pool, but I think this year could bring a lot of craziness as the field is WIDE open.

In the event that all the remaining participants lose on the same day, the will chop the pot. Tiebreakers have been discussed in the past but we just have not been able to come up with something that makes sense or is fair.

Please PM me a while if you are interested. I will also need your email address (and Paypal email address if different) as I will send out everyone’s pick ASAP after tip off of the first game each day. All picks will be due prior to then or you are disqualified. My paypal email address is CJSNYDER1@comcast.net. I will likely ask everyone to send between $29.80 and $31.00 to not trip up the Paypal “gambling pools” sensors. When you send funds PLEASE send “friends and family” and include your RG username in the notes. I will not accept ANY entries this year if the funds have not been sent prior to the games tipping off. It is a fun pool but there is money involved, so try to get your picks in as early as possible and before the tip off of the first game each day. This way I can send out everyone’s picks ASAP. I will try to send my pick(s) out early to a Varncass or Razzle or someone so that no one thinks I am looking at other picks which could effect my own picks.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here, PM me, or hit me up on twitter (@Stewburtx8). Thanks for playing! I can’t wait for next week.

Hey Stew, would you prefer PM or email for picks (contingency picks?) Can I also send contingency picks for a potential rebuy? My second game today is a late tip, and wanted to get my picks out of the way for tomorrow.

PM is good. But it does not matter. I consistently check both.

Did it possibly go to junk mail for some of you? Regardless, resent to those who asked. Hopefully you got it now. I will try breaking it into 3-4 groups tomorrow

I keep checking but for some reason my email junk mail does not show anything newer than November ’16. Strange but then I don’t use that email all that often. I still don’t have anything and wonder if I should try a different email address. Strange. I never had any issue last year.

PM me if you want to try a different email Strange because its the same email I used last year and it worked fine.

Vandy doesn’t want to win this game do they? What a sloppy final minute of play.

The email with picks has been sent for today. I broke it into 3 different email groups and so far anyone I have asked has got it. Hopefully it works for everyone today, but as always, PM me if you do not see it come through (check your junk mail!) and I can always forward/resend (or maybe someone else here would be kind enough to do so if I don’t respond right away as I am heading out to watch the games).

Ugh screw SMU and their “lets play the perimeter” game. Drive to the basket. So pathetic.

  • afcangelo

That ones pretty big for anyone who faded SMU. Haven’t officially totalled it but I’d say that USC win just added about $1000 in equity. Biggest knockout we’ve seen yet by far

  • JENSGT

Yep. Annoyed at myself because I didn’t pick SMU in a single one of my brackets but I went with them anyways here. They just passed the ball around the 3 point line and wasted time. It was really terrible to watch as someone rooting for SMU.

  • JENSGT

I tied for second last year and the funny thing is this beat sucks but I felt worse when Nova hit that shot and cut my win from like $1800 to $750. Not gonna buy back in so good luck to everyone!!!

  • depalma13

Wow FSU is horrible. Can’t believe I fell for them. Good luck to those who moved on.

At least 75 lost today and there will be at least a few more

  • Slimdalineman

Alot left on Oregon…I picked them also today..but didn’t feel good about it

  • Slimdalineman

Had to sweat out that Oregon win..phew

  • DatDerFranny

Man mapping out my picks… to win this thing is like basically the same thing as hitting a 10 team money line parlay, haha… I envy the people who have 13+ teams left.

We currently have 83 remaining (started with 220). The maximum teams you could have left right now is 14. No one is currently in that situation though.

Right now only 4 people have 13 teams left. 22 have 12 teams left.

42 people have 11 teams left.

15 people have the minimum of 10 teams left.

  • baggerly

I’m one of those 15 people that only have 10 left and the path seems very narrow. I’d love to have at least 12 but I guess I’m in better position than the 137 already out.

  • alexovnumber8

I also have 10, not looking good right now :(

Just remember, you don’t necessarily HAVE to get the National Champion to cash in this thing. If some upsets happen, it could end sooner. 2 years ago we had 1 person free rolling in the National Championship game but they lost and we ended with a 13 way tie. Last year we did have one person win outright and two people split second place. There was actually still 100 out of 175 left at this point last year. Still 15 games to be played in the tournament and you have to make 6 more successful picks to end on the National Champion. But 4 or 5 could be good enough.

Just to be clear since some people have asked. I do NOT take a cut out of this pool or give myself any free entries. I’ve considered it but think it’s a little tacky. If anything, I’ve had a winner or two throw me a few bucks but nothing is expected. I run this pool because I enjoy it. It is the most fun March Madness pool I’ve ever done. Yes, it is very time consuming, but again, I enjoy it. This year has also been the best ever in terms of getting picks to me in a timely fashion, which I appreciate.

Now that re-buys are over (had a disappointing 9 rebuys this year due to limited Thursday and Friday knockouts), the payouts are as follows:

    1st- $4800
    2nd- $2070

Obviously any ties will split the prize(s).

  • Dpert002

I love this knockout pool and you have done a great job at running it. This is my first year but I am definitely going to be in this for as long as you run it. Thanks Stew and great job!

    What they said……..Thanks, great job

  • alexovnumber8

Agreed with the others above. I enjoy how everything is extremely organized and kept up to date. Ive had a lot of fun with this so far (until I lose haha), thanks for the great work!

  • DatDerFranny

Yeah this is a great tournament, and thanks for running it. Its making my brain hurt thinking of potential paths to victory, but I’ve been enjoying it!
