    Hello Grinders,

It is almost that wonderful time of the year again….the NCAA Tournament/March Madness is only 9 days away.

I am posting this early this year as last year I got a good response (92 total entries not including rebuys) and I wanted to start collecting a list of entries, email addresses for distribution of picks, and funds via PayPal if you are inclined to start sending them before next week. This pool is open to anyone but there may become a point where I need to cap the total entries as it is very time consuming trying to collect everyone’s picks each day. I doubt I do this though but try to get your interest/fees in early if possible.

This is probably the most fun/interesting pool I have ever done. I think those that participated last year would likely agree as I’ve already been asked by many people if I was running it again. The whole premise came from an article Bill Simmons posted several years ago. Here is the article (I miss Grantland): http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-official-grantland-march-madness-knockout-pool/ . Basically the idea is that you pick 2 straight up winners Thursday of the tournament, 2 straight up winners Friday, 1 straight up winner Saturday, 1 straight up winner Sunday, and then 1 straight up winner every day after that. You cannot use the same team twice throughout the tournament. Pretty simple.

If you lose on Thursday, you CAN rebuy on Friday but you have to pick 4 straight up winners. If you lose on Friday, you can buy back Saturday but you have to pick 5 straight up winners. If you lose on Saturday, you can buy back Sunday but you have to pick 6 straight up winners. No buy backs after that. If you lose or choose not to re-buy and you are eliminated. Obviously you still cannot pick a team more than once throughout the tournament.

The cost of the pool will be $30 per entry this year. 3 max entries per person. To buy back in is also $30. Buy back funds will need to be sent prior to the tip off the following day. The payouts will likely be top 2, but as anyone knows that played last year, ties can certainly happen. For those that did not play last year, we ended with a 13 way tie I believe. That being said, we did have one person free rolling in the Final with Wisconsin. A lot of people had their championship pick eliminated when Kentucky lost. Also, last year had a lot of chalk winners without a ton of upsets. I considered making changes to the pool, but I think this year could bring a lot of craziness as the field is WIDE open.

In the event that all the remaining participants lose on the same day, the will chop the pot. Tiebreakers have been discussed in the past but we just have not been able to come up with something that makes sense or is fair.

Please PM me a while if you are interested. I will also need your email address (and Paypal email address if different) as I will send out everyone’s pick ASAP after tip off of the first game each day. All picks will be due prior to then or you are disqualified. My paypal email address is CJSNYDER1@comcast.net. I will likely ask everyone to send between $29.80 and $31.00 to not trip up the Paypal “gambling pools” sensors. When you send funds PLEASE send “friends and family” and include your RG username in the notes. I will not accept ANY entries this year if the funds have not been sent prior to the games tipping off. It is a fun pool but there is money involved, so try to get your picks in as early as possible and before the tip off of the first game each day. This way I can send out everyone’s picks ASAP. I will try to send my pick(s) out early to a Varncass or Razzle or someone so that no one thinks I am looking at other picks which could effect my own picks.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here, PM me, or hit me up on twitter (@Stewburtx8). Thanks for playing! I can’t wait for next week.

EDIT TO ADD: PLEASE GO TO PAGE 12 OF THIS THREAD FOR 2018 VERSION/POST

Rules have not changed other than buy-in is still $30

Really enjoyed the pool and you’ve done a great job running it.

One of the 4 with 13 teams left and just looking at the options and paths it’s mind numbing almost. And if you think Thursday is tough (arguable for sure), just wait until Friday!

Haven’t broken down the numbers completely but I’d say a solid 60-70% have already used Gonzaga. Lots like myself have used Baylor as well.

My gut tells me Arizona is gonna be chalk but I dunno about you all, but after seeing what Xavier did to my entry #2 pick (FSU) I’m goddamn terrified lol. Kansas could be chalky too. Don’t even want to look ahead to Friday yet but it’s only getting tougher from here

Out of 83 remaining, 52 used Gonzaga and 63 used Baylor

We currently have 83 remaining (started with 220). The maximum teams you could have left right now is 14. No one is currently in that situation though.

Right now only 4 people have 13 teams left. 22 have 12 teams left.

42 people have 11 teams left.

15 people have the minimum of 10 teams left.

Just realized I am one of the luck 4 with 13 teams left…and my first reaction was, wow it certainly doesn’t feel like it

Let me start by saying at this point, any team that has made it to the Sweet 16 could beat any other team.

But my guess is we all look at this round of games and probably rule out at least 2-3 teams that we are not considering picking. So if you have 13 teams available but 3 of them are those teams, do you really have 13 teams available? Haha.

Then again, sometimes it may payoff to be bold. The 3 winners last year all used Syracuse in the Elite Eight as decent sized underdogs.

  • afcangelo

Been debating the bold v. chalk/“safe” routes all morning. The bold plays this week, and I do mean bold is deciding on a winner between Michigan/Oregon on Thursday and the dreaded UCLA/UK on Friday.

I would love to flip 2 coins and go that route but I just don’t think i can. Either way it is going to be damned near impossible I think to be able to even be in a spot to pick a winner in the championship game

  • SeriousLate

As the only “13 teams remaining” entrant that didn’t purchase multiple entries, I just wanted to say… BOOM!

Now excuse me while I go pick a team that loses by double digits on Thursday.

  • afcangelo

I definitely thought about going Michigan tonight but couldn’t pull the trigger too much of a toss up.

I’m just stunned right now that Michigan is chalk with 30 out of 83 plays

  • Dpert002

Your telling me. I thought I was being bold going with them….

  • Jpitten

Wow I can’t believe how many went michigan. I went Oregon personally

  • afcangelo

And then there were 53. What a sweat that was

  • Dpert002

Well it was fun while it lasted! Good luck to the rest of you.

  • awilson45

    Let’s go Gonzagaaaa

Looks like we are down to 23

23 left. I’ve already told my pick to a couple people who sent me theirs early. I don’t want anyone to think I am looking at the other picks before making mine at this point. If you send me a pick and want to know my pick, just ask.

  • baggerly

This really hurts my head to think of anyway I could make it to the final with a team left. I’ve found the path but man it’s unlikely. Haha

Everyone said the same thing last year when they were forced to pick Syracuse in the Elite Eight…..and it ended up winning it for one person and two others split second. You never know in this crazy tournament.

Maybe another coach will just not coach at all like Sean Miller apparently did last night and cost his team the game.

I have a shot to get 1 team to the Final Four, but it’s gonna require some funky crap to happen, lol. I’ve enjoyed the run so far, great pool……….

Well Kansas knocked me out……..2nd year in a row I went out in the Elite Eight. We are down to 4……one person has to take South Carolina……one person can pick anyone but UNC….the other two can pick anyone but Florida

  • Stewburtx8

    • 2012 FanDuel WFBC Finalist

Down to 3….. while I think they might work out some type of split of equity, 2 of them can pick South Carolina and 1 of them can pick Oregon on Saturday.

  • Stewburtx8

    • 2012 FanDuel WFBC Finalist

Just to confirm, the final 3 remaining participants decided to chop the final pot and have been paid. This may have ended up being the outcome anyways depending what happens on Saturday.

I think this year again shows that the format typically works and no changes need to be made. Thank you all for playing and I look forward to next year!

    Hello All,

It is almost that wonderful time of the year again….the NCAA Tournament/March Madness is just over two weeks away. I know we no longer have CBB DFS this year (RIP), but we still have the NCAA Tournament and I am still running the Knockout Pool. I am posting this early this year as last year I got a great response (over 200 entries with rebuys) and I wanted to start collecting a list of entries, email addresses for distribution of picks, and funds via PayPal if you are inclined to start sending them early. This pool is open to anyone but there may become a point where I need to cap the total entries as it is very time consuming trying to collect everyone’s picks each day. I doubt I do this though but try to get your interest/fees in early if possible.

This is probably the most fun/interesting pool I have ever done. I think those that participated the last several years would likely agree as I’ve already been asked by many people if I was going to continue to run it. The whole premise came from an article Bill Simmons posted many years ago. Here is the article: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-official-grantland-march-madness-knockout-pool/ . Basically the idea is that you pick 2 straight up winners Thursday of the tournament, 2 straight up winners Friday, 1 straight up winner Saturday, 1 straight up winner Sunday, and then 1 straight up winner every day after that. Obviously you still cannot pick a team more than once throughout the tournament even after you rebuy.

The cost of the pool will again be $30 per entry. 3 max entries per person. To buy back in it is also $30. Buy back funds will need to be sent prior to the tip off the following day. The payouts will likely be top 2, but ties can happen. 3 years ago I think we had a 13 way tie for first place (one person was free-rolling the championship game but lost), two years ago, with we had one outright winner. That winner won $3500, with two 2nd place finishers taking home $750 each. Last year we ended up having 3 people left that chopped the pot at the final four. Each took home $2,290 I believe. I’ve discussed putting in place a tiebreaker but have not come across one I like. So I am fine with ties or chops if they happen, but the pool has worked pretty well in the past.

In the event that all the remaining participants lose on the same day, they will chop the pot. Tiebreakers have been discussed in the past but nothing seems to make sense or is fair (open to suggestions for the future).

Please PM me a while if you are interested. I will also need your email address (and Paypal email address if different) as I will send out everyone’s pick ASAP after tip off of the first game each day. All picks will be due prior to then or you are disqualified. My paypal email address is CJSNYDER1@comcast.net. I will likely ask everyone to send between $29.90 and $31.00 to not trip up the Paypal “gambling pools” sensors. When you send funds PLEASE send “friends and family” and include your RG username (or email address) in the notes. I will not accept ANY entries this year if the funds have not been sent prior to the games tipping off. It is a fun pool but there is money involved, so try to get your picks in as early as possible and before the tip off of the first game each day. Every year I am scrambling to chase down picks at the last minute (I pride myself on not disqualifying anyone if possible so I will send many reminders). This way I can send out everyone’s picks ASAP. I will send my picks out early to multiple people, especially if I am fortunate enough to make it to a point later in the tournament where seeing other picks could matter.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here, PM me, or hit me up on twitter (@Stewburtx8). As I said above, please also PM me (or email me/Twitter message) your interest and information (funds can be sent early). Thanks for playing! I cannot wait for the tournament.
