Even if you have been in this pool before, please read below for changes this year:

It’s almost that wonderful time of the year again, as Selection Sunday is 5 days away and the first round (I refuse to call the play-in games the first round) tips off in 9 days. I will be running the Knockout Pool again this year, which has always been the most fun/interesting pool I’ve been a part of. If you want to see discussions/testimonials, go here: https://rotogrinders.com/threads/march-madness-knockout-pool-1206574

The premise of this pool came from a old article Bill Simmons did on Grantland (I’ve run the pool ever since): http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-official-grantland-march-madness-knockout-pool/ . Most of you already know the rules but essentially you have to pick 2 straight up winners on Thursday, 2 straight up winners on Friday, 1 straight up winner on Saturday, 1 straight up winner on Sunday, and then 1 straight up winner each day after that (Thursday Sweet 16, Friday Sweet 16, Saturday Elite 8, Sunday Elite 8, following Saturday Final Four, Monday Championship. You CANNOT pick the same team twice. Picks will be due on the site each day at the nearest hour before first tip-off (Noon the first 4 days). Any pick not submitted by Noon will have to be eliminated. So get your picks in!

The cost of the pool will be $30 per entry this year. 3 max entries per person. All funds must be sent to me via Paypal prior to tip-off on Thursday. The BIG CHANGE this year is that I no longer will have everyone email or message their picks to me each day. It just got way too time consuming to collect all the picks and chase people down each day. This year I will be using this site for everyone to submit their picks each day: https://www.tournamentpools.com/. If you wish to participate again this year, please register for the site ASAP.

Please note that there as always been the option to re-buy if you lost in any of the first couple days. For example, if you lose on Thursday, you could buyback Friday for $30 but you would have to pick 4 straight up winners (if you get them right you are back to picking 1 straight up winner on Saturday with everyone else). If you lose on Friday, you could buyback Saturday for $30 but you have to pick 5 straight up winners. Please note that you must continue to not use the same team twice. No re-buys allowed after this. I could not find a hosting site that allowed this functionality but I will continue to allow this option and picks would be sent to me via email/message. I would post them on the site message board/manager note for everyone to see going forward.

The hosting site charges a fee of $1 per person that will come out of the prize pool. All remaining funds will be paid out (I do not take any commission out of the prize pool). Please send between $30.01 and $31 via Paypal (anything extra sent will help cover the cost of the hosting site). I typically pay 70% to first and 30% to second, but there can be ties or deals/chops are often made towards the end (if everyone agrees).

Anyone interested in the pool please PM me here, email me or hit me up on twitter (@Stewburtx8). I will then provide the pool ID and password to get signed up. Funds must be sent to be as soon as possible (due before first tip-off on Thursday at the very latest. I will also need to know you entry name on the site to match to the Paypal funds (please do not change it once you tell me it).

I will try to monitor this thread for general questions but feel free to PM me with any specific questions, comments or concerns. Also start PMing me with interest so I can start getting people signed up and funds received. I will check PM’s periodically throughout the day.

Hello everyone. I paid the site hosting fee on Saturday. I am still collecting a few payments (from locals) but I think I can finalize the payouts. Total buy-ins and rebuys I think totaled $10,590 less the site hosting fee (plus a few people sent a little extra- a few sent a little less)…so I can round the payouts to the following:

    1st- $7200
    2nd- $3100

Reminder, even though the site asks for one, I do NOT use a tiebreaker system for this pool. Obviously chalk favorites have prevailed so far and we still have 122 entries left (5 were rebuys). While this will certainly get whittled down some over the next few days of the tournament, if we end in a tie, those individuals will split the entire prize pool. Or if one person wins outright (they get 1st place prize) and 10 people tie for 2nd, they would split the 2nd place prize.

I am open to discussion on a tiebreaker in the future but I’ve never settled on one I really like. Total points in the championship game seems pretty random to decide a prize pool this big. Total value of seeds picked is an option but it also changes the dynamic of the pool some. Also, people often chop/split if it gets down to a few people anyways.

Also, what does everyone think of the hosting site? I know it has made my life easier this year. Overall, I think its been a very good change. Only downside is I still have to post re-buys manually, but that’s just a minor headache.

Love the hosting site. I use the same one for a big survivor football pool I am in. It is clean, easy to follow, and reliable. Good work boss!

  • DatDerFranny

Personally I think no tiebreaker is the best way to go for a pool of this nature. It’s just so unique that nothing really works. If 30 people tie for 2nd place and all those people get ~100 bucks, then so be it. (although in that event, paypal for you will be a headache)

Edit: two years ago, you had slightly over 80 reach the sweet 16, and it ended up in a 3 way chop during the final four, so I’m sure it will get whittled down. Last year a ton of people got bounced out on the opening friday with Wichita St. losing to Marshall (including me haha) and only a dozen or so made it to the sweet 16. not sure how it finished after that

The site is awesome! Makes it easy, you see everyones picks, easy to change your picks. Well done again!

I agree with the tiebreaker statement. I’ve discussed it with multiple people and ultimately have ended up reaching the same conclusion: no tiebreaker.

Last year ended in a 3 way tie. I think since I’ve been doing this here, the first year, with the least number of entries, there was a 13 way chop due to everyone running out of teams (when Duke beat Wisconsin). Then I had a year where someone won outright and two people split 2nd. Then two years where there was a 3 way tie or 3 way chop. Both those years I believe someone was free rolling the championship game but lost.

This year has had an abnormal amount of favorites reach the Sweet 16. But it will still get whittled down. At this point you have to pretty much pick a path and hope you have teams waiting there for you to pick, while also not losing some toss up games. Or you can just play to survive as long as possible and hope for mass chaos.

Yes, the decision for this year had already been made. No tiebreaker from the beginning.

I just was seeing if anyone thinks there should be a tiebreaker in the future. But it has never really got much support.

Awesome site and very fun to participate. The next week of the tournament will definitely be more interesting due to this contest.

    Thank you for running this.

  • rvnfn77

Thanks Stew. Awesome contest love it. I agree with no tiebreaker for the future is my vote. The site I also like.

Question for you… If someone makes it to the championship game but runs out of teams and anyone who has a team left picks a team loses would all people who made it to the finals split the prize even if you did not have a team to pick?

Correct. If you do not have a team to pick, you are eliminated that day. But if someone picks a team and they lose, they also are eliminated that day. So basically that person or persons is free rolling to beat you, but if they lose, you would still split the prize.

    Got it. Thanks!

Well we had 12 people survive Sunday and make it to the Final Four but only 8 of them are still in the running to cash as 4 people have no teams left.

Next Saturday we will have 3 people on Virginia, 2 people on Michigan State, 2 people on Auburn and then 1 person still has Virginia and Michigan State that they can pick between. Good luck to those remaining! My last entry got knocked out yesterday with Kentucky.

Well things ended up a little anti-climatic as we had a total of 4 people reach the Championship game but they all already used Virginia and Texas Tech. So we had a 4 way split. Winners were paid this morning. Thanks for playing!

  • rcktpwr

Thanks again. Like the site choice as well. Fun as always.

  • preter

The way it played out this year there was actually no possible way to have a pick remaining for the championship game. Since each side of the bracket had one Final 4 game on Saturday and Sunday this year it set up this potential scenario. In order to have advanced back on Sat March 30th each player had to pick either Virginia or Texas Tech that day. Then when these two ended up being the teams that made the championship, you had to pick the other team, leaving no teams remaining. If one team that had advanced on Saturday and one team that had advanced Sunday (ie. Mich St v Virginia or Auburn v Texas Tech) made it to the championship then it could have been completed. Some years the Final 4 games have one side of the bracket one day and the other side the other day and we don’t run into this scenario.

  • osuryanf

Thanks for running this, had an awesome time! The disgusting Purdue loss to Virginia cost me heavily. I had Texas Tech left to use in the Final 4 and would have chopped the winnings… but Purdue up 3 with 5 seconds left and LOSING is a sick feeling lol..

    Thanks again man!

Good point. Yes, how the games are scheduled and how games play out in the Elite Eight and then Final Four will dictate if it’s even possible to get the Champion.

I know at one point I was sitting on Gonzaga and Virginia as the teams I wanted to reach the Final against each other. But they played their Elite Eight games on the same day, so it would be impossible to save them both.
