LAST SEC UPDATE: Upling risk a bit in CHI, with showers just forming out ahead of main line.

PRIOR UPDATE : NO change to specific forecasts, just a general outlook: If you want to fully avoid risk tonight, stay away from CIN, CHC, and MIN. Not the worst outlooks, but all carry some risk in different ways.

A handful of games that could be impacted by weather in some way tonight…

DET @ WASH – Some lighter showers look like they will pass DC just north, even showing weakening trends on forecast models, so I think it’s unlikely we see any impacts here. GREEN / YELLOW .

KC @ NYY – Winds NW at 10-15 mph, blowing out to right.

OAK @ BOS – Winds WNW at 10-15mph, blowing across the field left to right.

PIT @ CIN – Nothing too heavy, but steady rain over CIN now. That will eventually clear, though models are differing somewhat on how long that will take. If they do decide to play, and I think they will, it will likely have to be played in some light rain. Most likely scenario here is either just playing the game in the rain, or a late start to let things dry out a bit. There is still at least some PPD risk. YELLOW / ORANGE .

CWS @ TEX – The area of concern here is east of Arlington. GREEN . Winds S at 10-15, that’s blowing in from right.

SD @ CHC – Heavy rain is moving in tonight, it’s just a matter of when. This game will more than likely start OK, it’s just a matter of how many innings we can get through before the rain moves in. Current radar is essentially useless here, since we are talking about a later timeframe for the rain, but current model forecasts bring in the rain around 9-10ish. Keep in mind that because we are relying solely on weather forecast models, and not live radar, that timing is not at all a lock. Current thinking (and I don’t really expect this to change unless models flip wildly before lock) is that most of the game gets in, maybe all of it, but the risk here is that the rain is knocking on the doorstep, it could potentially move in early, and once the heavier rain arrives tonight they will have to call the game, there’s no waiting it out. YELLOW / ORANGE .

BAL @ MIN – Multiple bands of fast moving showers and storms are lifting up from south to north. Any of them have the potential to cause a delay if they pass over the stadium. I feel like the nature of the rain makes pitchers risky, because we could even see multiple delays if multiple bands pass over the city. Again can’t rule out a PPD either, but it’s more than likely to play with off and on rain. YELLOW / ORANGE .

ARI @ COL – Action looks pretty isolated, I’m not concerned. YELLOW / GREEN .

oh wow, some of these games look really risky! can’t believe they haven’t called the cubs game yet! even the twins look to have rain all night judging by the radar! i’m no kevin roth, that’s for sure but it looks nasty!

I was, does the Rotogrinders app not work? Is there somewhere I should be monitoring? When exactly is a game called? Do the umpires let the scheduled start time pass, then call it?

Alerts didn’t state it was postponed until about 10 minutes after late lock…for both PPDs

Locally, we were in “severe thunderstorm watch” and we had 3 different tornado cells pop up around the same 30 minute window. No T-watch or anything. That’s weather.

So stop crying and be happy you get what you do.

There’s always one guy who cries like a baby about the forecast. Any yellow/orange has a potential to be postponed. There were 11 other safer games to choose from. You gambled and lost, take some responsibility Nancy.

Just FYI, I updated the CHI game to note that the risk had increased with storms popping ahead of the line prior to lock. As for the MIN game, by the time I went to bed (9 eastern) it still hadn’t even started raining, and I’m not sure if it ever did. Sometimes a game gets a PPD that… Quite honestly, shouldn’t have. The thing about this job that a lot of people don’t realize is that I’m not forecasting the weather, I’m forecast how people will react to the weather. No rain leading to a PPD before first pitch is a reaction that is tough to forecast. Hope we both have a better night tomorrow.

We appreciate all you do Kevin – giving us well informed information is all we ask for, and you do that quite well. I knew I was taking a risk by playing some yellow/orange – came up snake eyes. Oh well. Will keep doing it. Hopefully, everyone fades the next high total yellow/orange game except me :)

Yeah I read that that minn ppd was very strange. Just for the record I was referring to the late slate, I knew the main would have been a risky gamble, and in fact my issue was more about the no alerts for the chi game and the misleading one about the minn, then finding out about the ppd 10 min after their scheduled start.

That BAL PPD tilted me too. I agree with Kevin it shouldn’t have been PPD. That’s the 2nd time BAL has done this to us this season amirite? Earlier this season they’re like bring umbrellas we gonna play ball, then late PPD. So basically we should learn that BAL has a penchant for calling games that shouldn’t be called?

Ultimately my call. Predicting Mother Nature not exact science. Do best you can based on info from meteorologists.

I was at the game in MIN and at about 7:10 they said there was going to be a delay and everyone was like wtf its not even raining. Then around 7:25 they said it was postponed without it even raining a single drop. I ended up going out to eat from there and when we got done eating around 8:30 it still hadn’t started raining yet. It was a joke they called it imo
