Growing weary of the drudgery of the NBA season so….

With 18 days until the start of the NASCAR preseason, and 25 days until the Daytona 500, today I dusted-off the old NASCAR database to review some historical data and plot my strategy for the 2019 season !!!

So far, I’ve hypothesized a few early-season and very preliminary predictions, developed some “potential” new metrics and analytical approaches, and made some changes to my NASCAR lineup builder/optimizer.

While I know it’s early and therefore this post/thread will go largely ignored, does anyone else have any early thoughts on the 2019 NASCAR season… good, bad, or ugly?

In the meantime, for any die-hards out there, to whet your appetite (yes, “whet” is correct… if you want to wet your whistle please grab a Budweiser !!!) below please find some stuff preliminary to the start of the season…. Also at least, and until the season starts maybe we can all use this thread as a general forum to share thoughts/ideas/data regarding the 2019 NASCAR season.

Nonetheless, regardless of whether or not anyone replies (or is even interested), periodically I will dump some sh*t…. uh, I meant some very interesting and provocative data and analysis below…. :)

Hope to hear from someone… anyone… soon !!!

EDIT: When I post tables, frequently the entire table is difficult to read. If anyone has problems viewing each column simply zoom-out and all columns should be visible. If this doesn’t correct the issue, please simply let me know and I will try to fix….

A Fantasy NASCAR thread with gje throwing out stats left and right. All’s well in the world again 😎

Cool… Thanks for the nice words and I’m glad you like the numbers !!! I love to play with data and it always makes me feel good when others appreciate and find useful the data/statistics/analytics I post.

Today I ran a bunch more numbers, mostly related to lineup construction per track/race. I will probably post either tomorrow or Sunday as formatting to post takes quite a bit of time/effort…. To preview, most of what I did today (like yesterday) involves lineup construction; specifically the best (better) lineup building strategies per track/race; including the “truth” behind building lineups at different tracks based on expectations regarding dominators and place differential drivers.

I’ve also done some regression analysis that has yielded some interesting positive/negative correlations concerning starting positions, practice times, DNF likelihood, etc. across a number of race/track circumstances and variables.

Going to be a fun NASCAR season !!!

Always appreciate your willingness to share your data. I’ve been reviewing data the last couple of weeks myself. Looking forward to Daytona. I just hope there’s enough people playing this season to keep the tournament fields at a decent size.

What a breath of fresh air to click on the ole nascar forum link and find actual discussion and stats!! Glad to see this is back!!! GJE love the cash out table! Think that will be nice tool to add to the box this year!

Very happy we already have a nascar thread before the season even starts. Some great discussion already. Wish I was intelligent enough to contribute more, but iI do enjoy reading these threads. Hope it is a great season.

Thanks for this Cooper! I had started working on this a few weeks ago based on random articles but was unable to verify it against anything.

👍 two things I will be focusing on for the 2-3 races after after Daytona will be how is the new ford performing and the effect of the new package. Not sure what % of my lineups will be non dominator contrarian for the first couple races with the new package but I will have some that are more point diff driven with one dom vs 2-3 dom. I would also expect points for fastest laps to be more spread out this year vs 3-5 drivers having the majority of them. Could be completely wrong with this and the leader of the race collects even more fastest laps than they have in the past. I do feel that the people who pay close attention to how the first couple races after Daytona play out will have an edge.

    13 Early Predictions….

    1. Ryan Blaney edges-out Chase Elliott for the MENCS Championship.
    2. Chase Elliott finishes the season with the most wins (6).
    3. William Byron wins his first MENCS race and makes the playoffs.
    4. The “Big 3” (Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex, Jr.) combine to win only 9 races. The new “Big 4” (Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, Erik Jones) combine to win 16 races.
    5. Denny Hamlin has the fewest pit penalties of all full-time Cup drivers.
    6. Jimmie Johnson, sans Chad Knaus, continues his downward spiral and by early July confirms that this will be his final NASCAR season.
    7. The 2019 Rules Package is “ho-hum” as many races stretch over 4 hours and both TV ratings and the NASCAR fan-base continue a rapid descent.
    8. The Gander Outdoors Truck Series remains the most exciting and most entertaining series in NASCAR.
    9. Except for Ryan Blaney, Stewart-Haas and Team Penske drivers struggle with the new Ford Mustang early in the year.
    10. 2018 MENCS Champion Joey Logano fails to reach the playoffs.
    11. Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, David Ragan, and Chris Buescher win the 4 Superspeedway races at Daytona and Talladega and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. takes out at least one-third of the field in 2 of 4 the races.
    12. Ross Chastain, Ryan Newman, William Byron, David Ragan, and Aric Almirola exceed expectations and Kurt Busch, Daniel Suarez, Clint Bowyer, and Bubba Wallace disappoint.
    13. Tanner Berryhill finishes DNF in his first 10 starts and fails to finish on the lead lap in every non-Superspeedway, non-road-course race in 2019.

Awesome list. Here are some of my dead serious but weird predictions:

    1. There is chaos in the playoffs and guys like Harvick, Kyle Busch and Truex all fail to move to the final 4. The last four standing are William Byron to the shock of the NASCAR world, Brad Keselowski, Aric Almirola and Chase Elliott. Elliott edges out Almirola for the most exciting ending to a NASCAR season in history, leading to what will be a 2020 season that will see a bunch of schedule/track/driver changes that end up revolutionizing the sport for the decades ahead.
    2. Ty Dillon wins a plate race.
    3. Matt DiBendetto becomes a regular top 20 finisher.
    4. Aric Almirola has a stretch of dominance at some point in the season, and would be my second choice to win the MENCS.
    5. Daytona prediction: Everything runs unexciting for the vast majority of the race. An incident takes 6 cars out early on, with most of them being would be contenders. With 15 laps left, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, in third place, makes a move the the inside to try to pass the second place driver, creating too much movement on the rear of the car he is passing. This causes one of the largest pile-ups in the history of the track, eliminating 25 cars, including Stenhouse himself. This leaves Kyle Busch to win the race, outracing Chris Buescher and Michael McDowell for the win.

    3 weeks to go!

Hey all…. Sorry I broke my promise and didn’t post any new data/analysis this past weekend. Wish I had an excuse, but I don’t…. Unless being lazy is an appropriate excuse….

Working on tables now and this afternoon I will be posting a bunch of Draftkings analysis, and probably in the next few days the same type numbers for FanDuel.

Also, for those interested in some excellent NASCAR weekly race and driver fantasy analysis, yesterday on Twitter Stevietpfl announced that his NASCAR package will be open for business sometime today….

Here’s his Tweet and here’s a link to his NASCAR Fantasy Package.

    Check it Out !!!

    EDIT:

Hopefully Stevie posts an update here sometime soon….

    See separate thread for details.

  • gje627

    FYI:

Below, please find 4 tables, 1 for each component of Draftkings scoring, Finishing Position points, Place Differential points, Fast Laps points, and Laps Led points. These tables should be considered in conjunction with my prior tables listing projected total fantasy points needed for different contest types to win on Draftkings.

Please note, for the Daytona, there are two sets of numbers, “1” and “2”. The number “1” stands for race #1 (Daytona 500) and #2 stands for the Summer race. This was done because Daytona is the only track with 2 races where each races has a different number of miles/laps.

Like before, all data used in the calculations below standardized to a field of 40 drivers and, for fantasy point types dependent on miles/laps (fastest laps and laps led), miles/laps are standardized for each track/race in 2019. Importantly, numbers below assume a complete race and no overtime or no shortened races due to inclement weather, etc. For most races, the top 6 fantasy scoring drivers on Draftkings can not be included in the same lineup due to salary constraints. Thus, accommodations have been made in the numbers below to account for salary limitations.

While most columns headings are self-explanatory, columns for floors and ceilings represent the expected fantasy point range for approximately 80% (P = 0.8) of non-overtime, non-shortened races at each track/race.

If you have questions, please advise. One favor, though….

If you do have questions, please post this forum thread and not personal message me. Frequently, I get several similar questions from different people; thus it’s both easier and less time-consuming to simply answer questions in the thread…. Another advantage is that if I’m not available to reply, frequently another thread participant can answer as well….

    Sorry… But thank you. :)

Next, if I can get the format down, I will post some correlations…. Wish me luck !!!

Finally, if enough people are interested, I will post similar numbers for FanDuel sometime this week.

EDIT: Wow, these are going to be some long posts !!!! Need to figure out a different way to share data and analyses….

Als, due to column width limitations, I deleted the variance column in the numbers below. For those who need the variance for a subequent (not included) statisitcal measure, remember the variance is simply the standard deviation squared (i.e. the standard deviation is the square root of the variance). For reporting purpose below, the standard deviation is preferable because by definition it is expressed in the same units as the underlying analysis; that being “fantasy points”.

Should I post the other three tables?

    Or are they too long?

    A little help here….

  • wscooby

I always think the more information the better!! You obviously have done a great service. Your Math skills are way more pronounced than mine and I do not know how best to relate the information you have provided. Is there any layman’s help you can provide or tips. Thanks for your help in this forum!!

    Thanks for the feedback.

I think tonight, I’ll post the other three tables, even though they are long; but I would really like to figure out an alternative to posting here given the limitations of posting data in forum threads (was thinking about linking full tables in Excel and .csv to my Google Drive but I really don’t want to give that away for all the world to see). Regarding an explanation, yes I absolutely agree and I will provide on eventually…. I try to make the tables as self-explanatory as possible because I already feel bad that I take-up so much space in the forums and I hate to add to that by including another super-long explanation immediately after I post.

For now, regarding the table above, and the remaining 3 I’ll post shortly, the first column may also be a little confusing…. Quite simply, there are 6 drivers in a Draftkings lineup. The numbers simply represent the highest (1) to lowest (6) fantasy scoring drivers in said lineup.

Anyways, until I figure out another solution, I’ll post the remaining tables in this set shortly….

Thanks again for your feedback !!! :)

Got some reading to do tonight i see :)

Interesting…. In addition to shedding most its motorsports staff, including Bob Pockrass, effective yesterday ESPN has officially shut down Jayski (both the legacy site and any new content on the ESPN site).

Apparently, ESPN isn’t very optimistic about the NASCAR product this year and in the near future….

    #SAD (:

      RG Overall Ranking

Gje thanks again for the data! It really shows great insight, particularly with dominators and certain tracks. It will be interesting to see how less horsepower this year will affect the best cars this year at the 1.5 mile tracks. I can’t wait to see.

You’re welcome Vandy. :) Still need to post, and explain the correlations from my regression analysis, both Spearman’s rank as well as the standard Pearson…. Both are pretty insightful, especially taken in conjunction, regarding dominators, place differential, and pure points expectations. I’ve done some work on some numbers with a new rules package (so far the intermediate cookie-cutter tracks only). If I get time, I will also try to post my best “guesstimation” on how I think fantasy points will be affected….

Like you said, it will be interesting !!!

    Hey Guys and Gals,

    Real quick….

For all of you sick of my too-long, terribly formatted data and analytics tables, my confusing and long-winded methodological mathematical/statistical/programming monologues (yes, most/all?… tedious, wearisome and boring), and my occasional (okay, often) off-putting personality and general grumpiness…..

    Great News !!!

This message will be my final post here at RG related to NASCAR (and likely mathematics/statistics/ programming/other sports… particularly UFC) as well… at least for awhile.

Without going into specifics, as I don’t want to break RG’s terms of service, last year I was first approached, and as a result of the recent gaming ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, finally/recently succumbed to an offer by some folks interested in working on some cutting-edge DFS and gambling related “stuff”; primarily in the areas of mathematics, statistics, and programming…. Think DataCamp meets Codeacademy meets StackOverflow meets MIT Sloan Sports Analytics, meets projections/ advice…. all in a maker-space like setting….

As such, since I’m almost exclusively a numbers player (i.e, a total DFS/gambling moron-dumbass without numbers), this is right up my alley !!!

Nevertheless, since my initial focus will be on NASCAR, it would be in very poor ethical taste to continue posting here…. Thus, this is it.

With that said, sweating NASCAR with everyone here has been a hoot. Furthermore, given the talent and insight of all those who participate in this thread, I have zero doubts that everyone here will crush-it this year in NASCAR DFS.

    So, in closing….

    And, as always….

I can’t wait to see everyone here at the top leaderboard this NASCAR season !!!

Good Luck, Take Care, and Best Wishes Everyone !!! :)

Congrats and shucks at the same time, I’m admittedly a very old 33 and don’t always understand the analytics and numbers but find them very intriguing and you have always been an amazing contributor to this community despite your amazing success, which can’t be said for a lot of top dfs players. I wish you the best of luck in everything you do in dfs and the rest.
