Since Yahoo stopped having season long NASCAR leagues, what is the best site to use?

FYI: I maintain a number of sports databases including an extensive NASCAR database and thought the following data may be of interest to those who plan to play the Daytona 500 on Draftkings this Sunday (fantasy NASCAR is back … YOO-HOO).

As such, below is a table with Draftkings fantasy scoring for each the last 26 NASCAR Daytona Cup Series races from 2005 to 2017. I’ve included scoring for only the top six (6) fantasy scoring positions to correspond with the lineup size on Draftkings.

The first column “Year-Race” is the year the race occurred and the race number for that year. For example, “2005-17” was the 17th race of the 2005 NASCAR Cup season. Obviously, any race designated with a “-1” is the Daytona 500.

Additional data in the table include a driver’s Draftkings fantasy points rank, driver start and finishing position, total Draftkings fantasy points for the race, and a breakdown of scoring for each Draftkings fantasy points category (place differential, finishing position, fastest laps, and laps led).

Please note that field size for all races from 2005 to 2015 was 43 drivers (the first 22 races in the table). For the last four (4) races, the field size was 40 (beginning in 2016, NASCAR limited all races to no more than 40 drivers).

Hopefully, the data below will help you in your research by identifying possible starting positions and, more importantly, starting position combinations that will likely result in a winning lineup on Sunday.

In advance, I apologize if the table below is somewhat difficult to read. For whatever reason, I always have a terrible time formatting tables in Textile.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Please note, anytime a fantasy points rank repeats itself, this means there was a tie in fantasy points for that position. You probably would have figured that out by looking at the “Total DK FPts” column but I thought I would point it out just to make sure.

    GOOD LUCK

    Another FYI.

While most of you may know this already, qualifying for the Daytona 500 occurred on Sunday, just prior to “The Clash”. Unlike all other races during the NASCAR season, qualifying for the Daytona 500 only sets the first two (2) positions on the starting grid (the “front row”), with some possible exceptions (see below). The front row for this year’s Daytona 500 is as follows:

    1. Alex Bowman (Pole)
    2. Denny Hamlin

In addition to the setting the front row, Sunday’s qualifying set the starting grid for the two (2) Can-Am Duel races this Thursday, which in turn will set the final 38 starting positions for Sunday’s Daytona 500. If interested, Draftkings has posted contests for the Can-Am Duel races.

The starting grid for each Can-Am Duel can be found here: 2018 Can-Am Duel Races – Starting Grid

In the event the Can-Am Duel races are cancelled (rain, etc.) then the Daytona 500 starting positions for “Open Teams” (non-Charter Teams… David Gilliland, Brendan Gaughan, D.J. Kennington, Mark Thompson) will be based on last Sunday’s Daytona 500 qualifying. NASCAR’s rules are a bit unclear, but in this instance I believe the starting positions for “Charter Teams” would also be based on qualifying order.

Regardless, there are only 39 40 drivers (Gray Gaulding is likely to race, as of 01/12/18 without a sponsor) entered in the Daytona 500 so all drivers will make the field.

Currently, there is a 10% for rain on Thursday in Daytona, though it is Florida so this could change.

The 2018 Daytona 500 qualifying order can be found here: 2018 Daytona 500 Qualifying

    2005 – 2017

Like the first table, this is more or less a data dump. As the week progresses, I’ll probably post additional data here. I will probably also post some more advanced race analytics. I’m not playing the Can-Am Duels, as the contests are pretty poor (disappointed with Draftkings for that). If anyone has a particular data/analytics need, let me know. The only caveat is that I will only make it available in this thread and not by direct message.

While the data below is somewhat basic, hopefully it provides at least a big picture of how the drivers in this weekend’s race have performed historically.

Again, my apologies for the formatting. However, if you copy the text below and “paste special” then “values” in Excel, or the equivalent in another spreadsheet program, it will copy properly formatted in your spreadsheet.

I don’t play NASCAR but found the data interesting. Out of the 156+ drivers to finish as top 6 scorers only 20 have started in the top 10.

    Any general takeways gje?

  • gje627

I haven’t dug too deep into the data yet, but I think the general plate track strategies will hold true on Sunday.

Namely select drivers starting in the back, don’t be afraid to leave a lot of salary on the table (and by a lot I mean several thousands of dollars), pair strong drivers with their teammates (Penkse looks really tough this weekend … Keselowski, Logano, Blaney) and dismissing the first half of last season, the Toyotas are always strong, identify drivers with both front end speed and torque to push, play Danica Patrick because it really would be cool to see a woman win a Cup series race (especially the biggest one of them all), and make sure you have plenty of beer on hand, as some crazy shit is likely to happen in the last two or three laps that could either make you rich or ruin a perfectly great day. :)

Anyone else throwing darts at the Twins on DK tonight? For the first, I wanna play Brad, but he has to be pulling down the highest ownership, right?

Keso should be about 80% owned. I assume Ragan will be by far the highest owned salary relief. In the 2nd I would assume Truex starting 13th will be the highest owned with Dinger being the highest owned salary relief. I tried to stay away from the guys starting too far back since the past 2 years the top 10 starting positions tended to stay in the top 10 but Truex could move up 4 spots in lap 1 based on the immediate competition in front of him.

Thanks. Ragan’s qualifying issues have me scared. I’m not finding I really need salary relief in that one, but I’d probably take old man Gaughan over Ragan if I did.

My guess regarding ownership for the 2nd is Truex and Busch as 1A/1B. Excited to get this going, glad DK is on the Twins.

Can we use the clash results at all in terms of finding value for the duels or is that race too fluky?

Gaughan has no back up cars, he won’t race hard were as Ragan does.

The clash and these races tonight are totally different. The drivers who have no back up cars will just hang out back, only way they move up is thru attrition and seldom do you see be wrecks in these races. The best picks will be 8-13 in general and don’t be surprised if someone who qualified 1-2 is in winning lineup as typically one driver leads the majority of these races. Racing tonight should not be exciting as you will see single file racing for most part.

As usual, DK underestimates the popularity of NASCAR. Both “big” Duel GPPs fill with plenty of time to spare.

  • Jacobkaiser1325

So for the Duels would it be a bad idea to just choose Ragan and the 5 guys from the 10-15 range? Maybe one towards the front

Duel 1 GPP winner last year had Joey Gase starting 20th and only moved up 3 spots. Also had Bayne who started 10th and moved up to 6th. Duel 2 winning GPP LU had 5 drivers that started in 11th-16th positions.

  • billholler

BTW, I cashed one LU last year in Duel 2 despite having Blaney who blew an engine.
