Republican or Democrat or any affliation. Rumor is Detroit and New Orleans are about to get hit hard next week.

The city of Detroit’s trajectory is worse than New York City, if I remember hearing correctly.

We’ll see. I hesitate to trust any projections or numbers, because there isn’t enough data to really build off of. Michigan does there daily update and release of numbers anytime between 2 and 3, so I’m pretty curious to see where we are at.

I just saw that Trump has now ordered Ford and GM to produce ventilators.

I really don’t see how Ford and GM can offer any benefit in manufacturing something that clearly isn’t in their wheelhouse. Dyson, for example, makes a helluva lot more sense. This is an apples and oranges conversation. I guess it makes sense for Trump to invoke the DPA and require Sealy to begin making missiles. That makes almost as much sense.

People should stop harping on use of the DPA. If companies are volunteering, isn’t that a better approach? Just the threat should be enough, not to mention the fact that I believe that we’d really like to avoid nationalism of our free market. If you want that, stop your complaining and move to a country that practices that behavior.

They absolutely did. Came across this chilling timeline in my internet browsing last night
    https://www.nationalreview.com/the-morning-jolt/chinas-devastating-lies/?utm_source=recirc-desktop&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=right-rail&utm_content=top-stories&utm_term=second
The World Health Organization, whether out of an overabundance of political correctness or sheer incompetence, also deserves blame for failing to raise the alarm over this global health threat

What’s even worse is china politicized the covid for a global agenda even though they muffed the punt to be honest china does’nt care because they have 1.8 billion people and they are a numbers regime who’s in it for the long haul the us government plays bingo China plays chest with all the bs the state department spews from their mouth on global security you would think they would’ve been ahead of the curve months ago instead they fumbled

GM offered to. They are working with a partner (who likely has some capability or know-how) and came up with a plan. So no, this is hardly like requiring Sealy to begin making missiles. The GM initiative isn’t even a direction by the government, but were there to be direction, the government would presumably take into account what companies can reasonably do.

And, yes, companies volunteering is a better approach, but it isn’t enough. There has to be a coherent country-wide plan and it needs to be directed at the Federal level.

Your comment about avoiding nationalism of our free market is simply ideological garbage, is likely one of the main reasons Trump hasn’t used the DPA, and may wind up killing a lot of people. No one rational would think that we instantly become like Venezeula if we use the DPA to help our country in the time of a global pandemic. This isn’t nationalization of industry in normal times. It wouldn’t make us some socialist country all of a sudden.

There’s a reason the DPA exists. Exactly for times like this! It’s an emergency! Use the DPA to get things going and distributed, and then, when the crisis is done, you go back to normal!

“Quit complaining” is such an utterly stupid take, I don’t even know what to do with it.

Yes. Stay home. That’s the only responsible thing to do. You have a duty to stay home unless you are performing an essential service. In your case, if you can go to a big wide open space without interacting with anyone, there is little specific harm there, but of course if everyone feels that way and then there is interaction, we’re back to it being not okay).

And of course it spreads within a home because it’s so close quarters, but if everyone in the home is staying home and taking precautions, then maybe it won’t get into the home in the first place!

You can’t deal with this generation of covIDIOTS and this is also why your country will be dealing with this for months and be the world leader in cases and deaths but hell, let’s pack those churches on Easter (WTF !).

Way too many people thinking they know better than what your lawmakers are telling you to do.

All non-essential services have been shut down here and now police are doing checks on roads and highways to find out why people are moving around. For work, I’m deemed essential so need to be in the office but 3 of us are doing it on a rotation so I’ve been home working all week but now need to go in Mon-Tue next week. We have 36 cases (positive) and 1 death so far in a population of around 1.4M – we’ve been on a social distancing and a non-essential lock down for 2-3 weeks. Our numbers have to be among the lowest in North America because the majority of people have listened and followed what we have been told. Weird huh ?

    Zieg,

I’m not suggesting that I believe the threat of Nationalism is a reasonable thought. I only offer it as a plausible reason why Trump & co. are not directing companies per the PDA but rather using it as leverage. If full enforcement of DPA were necessary to get things done, I believe it would be applied. I think applying to business and asking how they can help might be better than assigning them. We’re not talking about a company who normally makes that specific product and needs to be urged to increase production, etc. These guys have no idea how to make that product. Can they partner with someone who does and offer manufacturing support, supply chain volume, etc.? Sure, but that is what they are doing. Who exactly do we need to tell that they must assist and in what manner? Should we have told Hanes to stop making underwear and start making masks?

Personally, I could have supported a full lockdown for 2-3 weeks, maybe a little longer. Since we were behind the 8-ball without adequate testing, it seems to me that was the prudent approach. I fear that we will see what is happening in NY will eventually spread and that they are only the tip of the iceberg. They are early due to their position as a landing spot for international travel and impactful due to their density. Less dense areas may not be as severely impacted but I do see it spreading with no barriers in place to stop it.

Yes, it is a plausible reason why Trump & co aren’t doing what needs to be done with respect to the DPA and is one reason more people may die than otherwise would have been necessary. It is a disgrace that ideology is contributing to the problem.

I’m a broken record here, but the Federal Government needed to be controlling/overseeing manufacture and distribution of the necessary supplies weeks ago. Instead, we have had, and seemingly continue to have, 50 states competing with each other for limited supplies at increased cost. It was chaos. That can’t happen in an emergency fast-moving situation such as this.

So yes, you speak with industry leaders, see what they are capable of, and get them going, and then distribute as is necessary. Maybe that does mean telling Hanes to stop making underwear and make protective masks and gowns for a month, of course, if they have the capability! That’s a great example!

    MOD NOTE

Just before it all gets out of control. Can we please refrain from discussing the government aspect of all this because I know it will go there. Yes, Covid-19 is of legitimate topic tonight and I’m sure I’ll let a lot go. BUT, Trump, Biden, Bernie have nothing to do with Gobert having Corona Virus or what the NBA will do here. So can at least keep away from the politics.

    Panda ….

    Per above, twenty-some days ago … you politely asked … but didn’t follow-through ….

Since we all know that the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is a massive world-takeover conspiracy between the U.S. “off-the-books” Black Helicopter militia (“Deep-State” only because Trump is our savior !!!), the “Fake News”, the United Nations out for world domination, and the horde of cryogenically frozen aliens at Area 51 … and there’s no cure !!!

    It seem to me ….

The “NBA 3/11” DFS forum thread has pretty-much run it’s course and it’s long past due to lock-down … permanently ….

    Anyways … just a thought ….

    Myself?

I need to crawl back into my underground bunker … fortified with 36 inches of concrete and steel, stocked with freeze-dried granola and dehydrated meat … and empty my poop buckets, pee urns, and finish my SARS-CoV-2 resistant tinfoil hats !!!

    Good Luck Above Ground ….

    Suckers !!!

Thought this was a DFS forum and saw Panda’s request, as forum moderator, not to talk politics.

Also … I know my humor sucks ….

So what I said above was me being trying to be funny … in a “facetious” sort of way … except for the tinfoil hats of course, that part is true. :)

    Anyways … just a thought ….

There is no NBA going on right now. When there is another game, I’m sure there will be a new thread that will be filled with discussion of it.

Right now, some of us discussing the GLOBAL PANDEMIC that has taken over all of our lives.

A request for a thread to be locked down seems utterly mean-spirited and wholly unreasonable. You don’t want to join the discussion, but you apparently don’t want others to have one either? In this case, the appropriate response here (and in many other situations this isn’t appropriate) is to say that you should feel free not to click into this thread.

    Take care.

Edit: I see in a later comment of yours that your post was an attempt at a joke. I certainly didn’t pick up on that, and it looks like no one else did either. Perfectly fine to make jokes! But I am going to leave my post here as-is, as it’s likely the moderators wouldn’t pick up on your joke either.

    Sorry ….

Thought this was a DFS forum and saw Panda’s request, as forum moderator, not to talk politics.

No worries. You might have missed Panda’s post in The Player’s Championship thread, where he kind of laid out guidelines for discussing the coronavirus pandemic and politics while we wait for sports to resume.

“After discussing it further with bhdevault, we decided for now to keep the threads here more open. There’s obviously crossover, but there’s kind of a PGA clique, a NBA clique, an NHL clique and you guys all know each other and have rapports and maybe a family aspect to it or friendships to some degree. Maybe some of you want to talk about the virus and it’s impacts in your specific cliques instead of sharing one giant thread with everyone. That was the idea at least.
Now, most importantly we want everyone to be civil and respectful. Unfortunately with political discussions often people get away from that quickly. So, ideally people who want to discuss the virus can do so without ultimately bashing each other.
In a perfect world, everyone who uses and enjoys these forums will be happy to continue posting here in this downtime. We will continue to monitor the activity in the threads and make sure that everyone is being respectful and will adjust the way we’re handling the state of these threads if need be.”

I think we’ve been pretty civil and respectful so far, with minimal (if any) bashing going on. Honestly, I’d probably go crazy if I didn’t have this space to discuss things with the usual suspects from the NBA Forum. My roommates aren’t as well-informed or interested in what’s going on in the world, and I’m confined to this house, so…hopefully this thread can continue on.
Aside from opinions, there has been some good information posted here.

Agreed – still think the magnitude of the impact is unknown and purely speculation at this point.

Well I guess I can talk about some basketball.

Does anyone know how KAT’s mom is doing now? Last time I checked it said she was in a medically induced coma. I had a friend in that once it’s even scarier on paper, but it usually happens so that doctors don’t want you to overwhelm your other organs so they put you in a coma. Hope she’s ok and recovers.

No the governor doesn’t want to do it, but then individual cities might be doing it themselves. The Florida governor hasn’t issued a state wide shelter in place yet. I would argue he’s clearly going with his political party on this one.

Other than that, I can’t really say any other governor is explicitly just doing this politically. I’m sure if Illinois had a Republican governor he probably shuts it down because Chicago is a hotspot.

I think the governor will be shutting it down very soon. There’s a lot of pressure on him from what I read and with the aging population he can’t let it get bad.
