I feel left out and need some NHL talk back in my life. Perhaps this will evolve into a blog. Today there were some happenings!!! I’m sure yisman (or many others can help me) but here are the highlights:

Just saw this one Joe Pavelski to the Stars.

    Panarin to the Rangers (expected)

BobRov to the Panthers (good Bobby Lou replacement)

    Nyquist to CBJ

Filppula back to the Wings (not really noteworthy but I’m a Wings homer and like the move)

    Myers to the Canucks

    Zucc to the Wild

I’m missing a lot but these are some of the noteworthy ones.

In conclusion the Rangers are looking immediately better with the #2 Finn boy already locked up. Hard to dislike the Panthers too as they should have been better last year. More to come and feel free to add transactions or comments.

Not sure why everyone is knocking Colorado so hard. Did they overpay? Maybe. However they clearly have a need for centers.

Look at the last cup champions lately:
    Schenn/O’Rielly/Bozak
    Kuznetsov/Backstrom/Eller
    Crosby/Malkin/Bonino

Those center lineups are very comparable. The only “weak” center there for the line he on is Brayden Schenn. As for defense, it doesn’t really matter based on the cup teams. None of them are true defensive powerhouses, and Pittsburgh for their second cup literally had Justin Schultz (a player Edmonton of all teams gave away) as their #1 defenseman.

Carolina Hurricanes team captain Justin Williams announced he will step away from the NHL ahead of the 2019-20 season on Monday.

“This is the first time in my life that I’ve felt unsure of my aspirations with regards to hockey,” Williams said via a press release. “For as long as I can remember, my whole off-season until this point has been hockey and doing what was necessary to prepare for the upcoming season. Because of my current indecision, and without the type of mental and physical commitment that I’m accustomed to having, I’ve decided to step away from the game.”

@toasty – i hear you and that could indeed be why… but i’ve read from a number of sources earlier in the year how badly the leafs needed to shed salary and how kadri was so unnecessary for that team, the talk increased significantly when he got suspended and a lot of people pointed out not having him on the ice possibly made them a better team because it opened up other options

then you have the fact we’re all dfsers and kadri was pretty marginal in that arena but barrie was one of the best dfs options at D and kerfoot was often excellent salary relief who could do very well when he had a pp role

@yisman – wild stuff – i imagine we’ll hear more about this at a later date though but this could be a trend migrating over from football where players begin to start thinking more about quality of retirement life vs pro legacy

Joe Thornton is gonna be an interesting case with no Joe Pavelski. Does he really play as the 3rd center without the other Joe?

He’s still an elite playmaker. I’d say Evander Kane on Thornton’s wing could be a 40 goal season for Kane…

No… No he is not. He is a liability to the team and this is beyond ridiculous to think they are going to allow him to play there this year.

  • cdenny99

That’s a bad take. He’s still a good player for the role he plays. And $2mil for one year is nothing

Ok how many 3rd line centers scored 50 points last season? Oh yeah just Joe Thornton?

How many centers can make any player with a stick a 15-20 goal scorer at 39 and in their prime turn Cheechoo into a 56 goal scorer? Oh yeah…

And what role is that? According to the guy I quoted he is an ELITE playmaker LOL and will be the reason Kane scores 40.. That’s a bad take.

If his role is to play every 3rd game and be a “leader” in practice sure why not. When you spend all that money on 7 players and a goalie that can’t stop a beach ball.. I
guess you fill the holes with what you can find.

But lets be honest. He has not been Elite for 8 years and has not been good the last 4. He lacks speed in a game that gets substantially younger and faster every year. Some guys just can’t let it go. Sorry Joe the game has passed you by.

Gawd cheechoo… what was that 14 years ago.. A different game of hockey .. You actually think He made Lebanc look good last year? I think it was the other way around. And getting 14 primary apples in a year at 5v5 does not make you an elite playmaker … just an FYI

Yes I do actually think Joe Thornton made Kevin Lebanc and Marcus Sorenson look good. Lebanc had a career year going from 40 to 56 points. Sorenson went from splitting AHL/NHL time to suddenly scoring 30 points (17 goals) at 27 years old which is a little old to be having a breakout season…

Meanwhile Joe Thornton had a 51 point season averaging 15:33 of ice time which is comparable to other seasons of his.

Thornton is always getting underrated, but pay attention to any player ever on Thornton’s line. They have career years. If Thornton had a Stanley cup or two he would be considered a lock for the HOF by everyone and one of the top 10 players of his era. Which, by the way he could’ve been like Marian Hossa and hired gunned his way to 3 Stanley cups and 5 final appearances by joining teams likely to win.

  • cdenny99

guys… can’t we just all agree thornton will go to the hall as a legend

  • yisman

    Ovechkin injured his leg

Werenski signed a three year deal

  • hautalak

Well I need a bit of a bump and vent. This offseason I knew Marner wanted a “big” contract. What I did not know was that he apparently turned down an offer of 3 years 11mil AAV because he wants a longer deal and to be paid as high as the rest of his teammates (Matthews & Tavares). IMO that is a crazy deal to turn down!!! One is because this is the NHL not the NFL, MLB, or NBA and deals like this don’t come around often (well I guess they have just recently but my point is that offer is more than fair). Second of all idk why you would want a longer deal when the cap will continue to rise and you will make more on your next contract. Third of all he couldn’t do this on his own and he needs the Leafs more than they need him. My last point could have contention but I’m starting to get sick of greedy pro players (RBs excluded).

Any Leafs fans out there with comments? Other comments? And who are you waiting on to still sign somewhere?

  • Jenesaisblah

Marner and Nylander are both victims of their greedy fathers which did a ton of damage to their reps. I’m from the London Ontario region where Mitch played his junior hockey and where he gained a massive reputation. The goodwill is disappearing. Even my grandma who went to every Knights game to see him doesn’t like him anymore. Same as a lot of people around here. Sad to see. I hope he comes to his senses and stops listening to his father for once.

Kinda disagree. There is so much pressure on the Leafs to win. He just needs to sit it out. If they tank the first 20-30 they have to pay him. Even if they do ok they still have to pay him as they know even with everyone they have they can’t win the Cup without him. And they only have AM34 on a five year deal so the window to win with this lineup is not a big one.

  • hautalak

I mean I don’t see him coming back as awful as Nylander was but it would take another at least 5 games to get up to the speed and that’s after already sitting out however many games. My opinion is they will get him signed before the season (just not sure when). Who knows what the contract will look like.

The problem is idk if they can even win it with him. Their blue line still needs a lot of help after some key departures, Andersen is not going to have the season he had last year again, and some young guys might regress in the points department a little. Maybe I am not giving the Leafs enough credit but they haven’t proven much to me these last few years.

They are pretty light in the toughness department. Boston dominated them in that way and the Blues would have eaten them for lunch. They would win every game if they played 3 v 3 in the playoffs lol

  • hautalak

Yeah them and the Oilers haha Could see FLA being dangerous in the 3 on 3 game too. Well I guess a lot of teams but those ones off the top of my head.

  • Jenesaisblah

They traded their toughest player Kadri LOL. He was a good checker. Just an idiot against Boston. I think they’ll get pushed around more this year than last.

I also think this was a downgrade for Barrie. He was a super fantasy player for Colorado but he won’t be nearly as effective in Toronto with Rielly there on the point. Maybe Marner being gone will help a bit.

But I’m with Hauta. I don’t think Leafs will have a very good year. I think Tavares goal scoring will regress with Mitch not there (if the season starts without him)
And Matthews goes thru multiple cold stretches every year.

  • hautalak

I just want hockey back now! Today was the first I saw of Marner’s offers so I had to comment on how greedy he was being. It’s not easy to get 10+ mil a year contract in the NHL as a forward.

Lmao imagine turning down over 80 million dollars. It still is pretty unbelievable.

  • Jenesaisblah

Lmao wpg offered laine 5 million a year. I guess that’s what you get offered to you when you go on super long cold streaks.
He’s at least worth 7 mil though.

You would think someone would offer sheet him for 7.5 . a 1st/2nd/3rd for a guy that can score…. sometimes…. seems fair
