i remember when my rotogrinders profile had like 12 screenames….now we have
    fanduel
    draftkings
    fantasy draft
    draftday-zzzzzz
    yahoo
    star fantasy
    draft mobile app

is that really it of all the good places to play????

Is this shocking? The past problems and the upcoming merger of DK and FD pretty much spells it out. Anything can happen but I don’t see anyone else major coming onto the playing field at this point.

Star Fantasy is pretty much dead too. You could check out Boom Fantasy (different format, but could be fun – never tried it myself).

Once the new regulations settle in, and become fully established, I believe we’ll undoubtedly have companies come in prepared to operate in the regulated environment. – I won’t guess as to what I think that timeline could be, however.

I realize given your interest in seeing DFS succeed, you’re logically going to say that, but come on – what about the current landscape do you see that’s promising?

Where is the funding going to come from now all, except the big two, have proven that it’s difficult to stay solvent?

Bumped, because the above was asked BEFORE the FantasyAces shoe dropped.

StarsDraft (formerly Victiv) though its basically dormant, I have a few bucks in there and use it to play golf.
    DraftWorld
    FanPicks

I use the latter to to play college and find them fun.

But regulations equate to higher operating costs.
I’m living in Virginia now and it’s cool that I’ve been able to not have to worry about waking up and having DFS be “illegal”, but I can’t even play on some of the mid-small sites, because they aren’t willing to pay the operating costs.

Also, many of the smaller sites were never profitable, they only existed because they were bankrolled by investors, because of the brief boom.
With the current state of DFS, I don’t see that money coming back anytime soon. It will take another boom….and maybe that happens once the lingering question of legality is gone, but I wouldn’t hold my breather, because I’d argue that it’s the sites and their poor management that have driven off a large portion of the player base.

That said, assuming the merger goes through, I do think a space will open for there to be a solid #2 site. Someone could become the alternative to the mega site, so I will be interested to see who fills that void.

Guys come on. Think about this for a second. Why do casual players play on the big two: 1) Advertising 2) Potential for massive payout.

A smaller site won’t be able to offer either of these things. Who will play at a smaller site then? Regulars, vs largely other regulars. The only reason I ever played at the smaller sites was due to overlay, and as we’re seeing, overlay and operational efficiency don’t go hand-and-hand.

Stick with the Big 2 plus yahoo and do hit and runs for the newer sites that popup every year ie when they have their big early flashes and monster promos you profit quick, bleed it dry and get your money out before whatever season you are playing ends. Those first few month are the safest time you will have because their influx of cash from new players is at its’ highest.

And IF you ever decide to stick around a new site for longer keep a minimum amount of daily play $$$ in there that you are ok to be stolen going forward. For example if you play a $100 a day on NotACrookFantasy.com then only keep $300 on the account or whatever you are ok with forfeiting if they decide to just leave.

This is what DK and Fanduel wanted. To wipe out all of the competition and all other fantasy entities, both daily and full season. And it is working. They caused the problems and they reap the rewards of the problems they caused. Sickening.

The history of smaller sites over the last few years would make me very hesitant to invest more money than I’d be concerned about accidentally flushing down a toilet in one right now……which, unfortunately, gives the big two (now big one?) less incentive to compete for our fantasy dollars.
