i get the meaning, it’s pretty obvious from context, but am very curious where the term originates, same with chalk – which again seems odd. I mean, it really feels like it’d be no different from calling Giovanni Bernard the ripe apple etc etc.

The term Free Square comes form the Roman Legion word Freis Suar. In the Phalanx, a spot in the middle was reserved for the capture of the head of the opposing Army.

    well played

but yeah it comes from bingo. They give you a free square. We’re trying to hit bingo here so if you effectively remove one decision it does quite a bit to improve your chances of hitting the optimal lineup.

You mean like how Lat Murray was a free square last week? Or the Vikings defense? Or Austin Hooper? Or like Callaway from the Browns today? Let’s see how it works out and whether it is actually free or comes at great cost.

if only the Roman’s used phalanx formations after the early Republic era this would have been pretty decent

Bingo? What kind of nonsense is that? Actually the term comes from the early days of fantasy sports. League organizers used to give everyone who played the most popular player a free cigarette for when they inevitably bust.
