Is anyone else shocked and alarmed that the GPPs are not filling up (specifically MLB Fanduel)? I was all ready to whine that the sizes were too small for the traffic I was expecting and I was so far off.

    Edit: Sport, Site

They are good at adjusting accordingly. Also, Massive money into PGA today played a part.

I’m a bit shocked MLB has had so much overlay. Everyone has been saying MLB is much bigger than NBA. The only way that can be taken seriously is noting that MLB season is double the size of NBA. Otherwise, MLB action is much, much lower than NBA.

Need to get rid of overlay because it is killing me. MLB rookie trying to stay out but the overlay keeps sucking me in.

Overlay isn’t much good if I can’t crack into the cash…lol

Yup, plus the NBA GPPs are puny now. Looks like the %15 rake drove everyone away. Nobody can win that way, not even the good players. No GPP at all for $2 or less with 2 hours left, not looking good folks.

looolll right….it was the 15% rake that drove ppl away….not the 2 game slate or the start of MLB. i would bet money that on any given night during NBA season 95%+ of the entrants into the swat or shot could not tell you what the rake percentage was for the tournament.

The sites are being aggressive with sizing and I think that’s awesome. I also think that because of the NBA/MLB overlap it’s causing both sides not to fill at the levels that they feel they will. I don’t think it has anything to do with rake. Just people splitting their attention around lock time.

I think the bigger early slate tied up a lot of money and when you combine that with a 3 game late slate, they might have been a tad aggressive this early with other sports going.

  • jimmyrad

The slates have lined up poorly due to MLB scheduling, weather, and other factors. Like a 3 game slate tonight. Not surprised these big GPP’s aren’t filling, I doubt we’ll see a worse week day night slate for MLB all season. Just like the pitching options will probably be worse tomorrow than any night the rest of the season.

Everything should even out shortly, in the meantime it’s nice to see both main sites be so aggressive.

Case in point. I was limiting myself to $8 per lineup. Tonight, the Monster has $17,200 in overlay, making a $200 entry a real cost of about $160. So, my limit gets thrown out the window.

Great for us, but eventually, they need to reduce size. Absorbing these losses while losing money to begin with will result in an ever larger increase in rake down the road. This is what is concerning me. This is the frontier. They are learning as they go, also, but the cost of this learning will be future rake increases.

Overlay is great, but you still have to win. That’s my problem.

  • FrancisBooth

It’s not really double the size. Yes the games are double but the length isn’t much different.

tried that in the $2GPP on DK for like 4 straight weeks last year….was down $20 (i think) and it was way too much work. highest cash was $70

  • ddmcd1974

People have learned that mlb the first few weeks is difficult. We already see crappy pitchers having to pitch due to injury etc. You have prior season data but unlike nba or nfl it is difficult to gauge early in the season. MLB is best when you have a few weeks of data.

I’m not saying it is plus EV in general. But with all of this overlay having a 3$ buyin worth 4.20 then stacking every team is a plus EV move.

  • mke272

I believe the overlay is bad for us. It is definitely part of the reason the sites have to charge fees that make the games impossible to beat for most of us. And it’s just money out the door to either people lucky enough to win a big tournament, or sharks putting in tons of teams.

  • slcseas

Maybe players hate it when the sites arbitrarily decide to turn a very playable 9 game slate into much less playable 3 and 6 game slates and decide not to play. Just sayin…

This combined with the early lock and work kept me from playing today outside of dabbling on SportsTradex. I just couldn’t get comfortable with any of my lineups on the bigger sites so I sat out and will be happy to have that money in play tomorrow and through the weekend.

The 6:40 lock time really threw me off today. I’m all about some overlay and had a solid idea of who I wanted to roster but the games were locked by the time I checked the lobbies.

  • WhyNotEh

Surprised that nobody has pointed this out yet, but last year the MLB Squeeze (which I assume OP is talking about) on FanDuel was capped between 10,0000-15,000 entrants most nights. I assume that based on the massive increase in numbers for the NFL/NBA this past season, they may have overestimated how large to make the MLB fields to start the season. I would much rather them be a little too aggressive in estimating field size than to have the tournament filled up 5 hours before lock like most nights during NBA season. Not sure how anybody is viewing this as a bad sign or as a trend of things to come. In fact, the prize pool is currently triple what it was most of the time last season (100K Squeeze VS. 30K Squeeze). Even if they eventually drop it down to a 60-80K guarantee to avoid overlay, it is still a massive increase from last year.

WhyNotEh, that is exactly what I am talking about.

It’s a bad sign that so much overlay is happening in that all of us overestimated the growth of DFS. Somebody’s going to pay for overlays and it won’t be the websites. However, the growth will still prove to be there as the Squeeze will be probably double what it was last year.
