    Hey guys,

We are making some changes to data collection and criteria for our Rankings as an interim solution to our rankings feeds being temporarily disabled on Fanduel and DraftKings as outlined by this post.

Whereas before we were getting data feeds from our partners, we are now collecting publicly available data from the lobbies of the big two sites using a dedicated team of employees/interns. We are making sure to collect this data without violating the terms of service of either site (i.e. using a manual process instead of using scripts to collect data).

Because this is a labor-intensive process and because we are only working with Tournaments in the lobbies, we are now only counting Tournaments and Satellites with $10,000 prize pools and a minimum of 10 players. 50/50s, multipliers, and Heads Up games will not be included in the Rankings going forward. We will be moving to these criteria on all sites, not just Fanduel and DraftKings.

We started this process several weeks ago when our data feeds were pulled and now have a process of importing this data into our database, so over the next several days, you will start to see recent results for FD and DK added to your profile!

We still consider this a temporary/interim change. Fanduel and DraftKings have both told us they want to support the RotoGrinders rankings once they have more clarity and more time to review their policies. We will continue to work with them and may return to a more comprehensive rankings system in the future.

With this change in data collection, we also have plans to introduce several new Ranking lists broken down by average buy-in level, so that smaller-level players can rank themselves against players that play at similar levels. Keep an eye out for these. We think they will be a big hit!

Thanks Riley. Glad to see this is back.

Questio: Generally speaking, how much of a “days gap” will be present between the last data pooled and when your team is starting their compiling. In other words, how many days since OCT 8th (if any) will not be compiled?

EDIT: Oh…one last question. Will your data include larger league play? Like the 100 or 250 entry leagues on FD?

  • DCoop328

So you guys are manually going through the top 20% of the Milly Maker. Thats over 16,000 entries to count. DANG that is labor intensive.

We are going back to October 8th, so once we are finished catching up on all the data we’ve already collected (which should just take a few more days), we expect to have no gap.

Since DK provides a CSV of contest results, we have a bit of an easier task with the Millionaire Maker, though it’s still quite a bit more manual work than we had to do before.

The FD Sunday Million provides a more difficult task of data collection (but we have our fingers crossed that FD will some day also provide a CSV download).

Unfortunately, we don’t currently have plans to include the large league tournaments on FD unless they also satisfy the minimum $10,000 prize pool limit.

Ah…well, I understand the bottleneck as it relates to manual entry. So you can’t include everything. ;) That said, league is a staple to the “GPP player” ROI structure as they are routinely paired with GPP plays because they provide better multipliers assuming you don’t make the top 10 in the GPP.

I really hope you find a way to include them.

  • habes1289

    Fantastic news, thank you guys!

  • gencoimports

You’re not counting 50/50s or multipliers? That sucks.

    Is this also temporary?

While losing H2Hs, for at least the time being, is not optimal, I’m really pumped we can announce the “tiers” aspect Riley alluded to in the quote above. This idea has been heavily requested by new users, and won’t affect higher stakes players. Now the Rankings will be more dynamic, and inclusive. Excited to see some fresh names grind their way to the top each “weight class”. — I’m also glad that our team was able to preserve the prestige & setup of the TPOY in unaltered form moving forward. — Please let us know if you guys have any feedback.

Some cool ideas with the tiers and all that stuff, but the fact that this is catered so much towards GPP players is kind of a waste in my opinion. Some of the best players in our game are cash players and many use these rankings to figure out who the top “x” overall players are, if you don’t include cash game players, it loses the whole point of the system, which is to rank who the best overall players are. Didn’t we have TPOY for the GPP players?

Were there thoughts of removing previous 50/50s and H2Hs from the current rankings so that all are on an even playing field going forward?

We thought about it but decided against it. The main argument against was that we’re not certain how long this current system will be in place.

We did decide to release these new tiered rankings from square one with the new data criteria. That’s actually why we don’t have them posted yet.

Sounds fair enough. On another note, check your inbox for an unrelated topic.

How about total wins rankings as a way to rank cash players? U can publicly see registered users win total jump after the slate concludes.

This is specifically against the terms of service of both DK and FD. We will not be doing anything like this as long as their terms are clearly against it.

It does say you can get their permission……I am guessing you have asked if that would be ok to do.

I’m sure once they had the data downloaded, they are using either an excel macros or a database with a custom code to parse the data. Would be crazy to have people do this manually.

Just wanted to say that I think this is a great solution. Thank you for getting creative so that we can still have new rankings until everything gets sorted out with the sites.

Kudos to you guys for spending the time & resources to bring back the RG rankings. Really appreciate the effort and look forward to the rankings. Thanks!

  • ColonialRampage

I think the most unfortunate part of this change is that it pretty much turns into a FD and DK only rankings because the smaller sites offer so few contests that meet these thresholds.
